Malzahn

Submitted by CarrIsMyHomeboy on

I am actively rooting for a Rodriguez return in 2011. However, being a realistic fella, I understand that this mightn't happen (/"duh").

Aside from the inevitable media-driven-Harbaugh!-ness of the weeks immediately post-Rodriguez, how does the Mgocommunity feel about Malzahn? Watching Auburn play and watching multiple camera shots of the sideline, one gets the inclination that Malzahn is running that show. To be sure, he will be a hot commodity either this season or next, and I imagine he'll sooner stick with Newton than abandon Auburn for anything other than a head coaching gig.

Odds are he'd do as well at keeping Denard in Maize and Blue as anyone (other than Rodriguez); so, how do you feel about Brandon--hypothetically--giving him a good, long look?

Decide next year.

Why we'd throw away the option that is the potential to be really good that RichRod brings for this year's "up-and-comer" is beyond me.  If there's an obvious concrete candiate like Harbaugh that we may only get one shot at, that I can understand.  I can't understand pulling the trigger for something (or it's equivalent) that will be available next year.

Heck, if you were that other incoming coach, all things being equal, wouldn't you want to walk into a situation with the defensive cupboard stocked a little better with 2011 recruits so that your clock starts ticking in 2012?

a program like UM needs to land a big time coach.. one who's already made a name for himself, sure malzahn is somewhat football-minded, but i don't think he'd get the job over harbaugh

Michigan has only hired one superstar head coach. I'll give you one guess who it was. Malzahn isn't the best choice right now, especially because the majority of the offense seems to have Newton making three fakes and then falling down for a six yard gain because he's about 30 feet tall.

"Tacopants"? Tacopants is Jason Avant's eleven-foot tall imaginary friend. Chad Henne spent much of 2005 hitting him between the numbers, which are unfortunately eight feet off the ground and made of dreams. Blessed with infinite eligibility and the ability to sneak on and off the field without alerting the referees -- made of dreams, remember -- Tacopants has taken a lesser role in the offense as Henne matures but still pops up at inopportune times. The term has its genesis in this post. That was from the old FAQ. Seems to be gone now.(?) I didn't look too hard

I don't know about anybody else, but I wouldn't feel too comfortable hiring anybody from Auburn anytime soon until a full investigation is complete, clearing the coaches. But maybe that's just my knee-jerk reaction to the pay-for-play situation.

Although I agree that Denard would be more likely to stick around if Malzahn were hired, I would have several issues with hiring him.  First, he's never been a college head coach.  I would much rather have somebody with a proven track record.  Secondly, he's a very offensive-minded coach.  There is nothing to suggest that he could fix the biggest problems with the current Michigan team, which are on the defensive side of the ball.

Not a bad coordinator, but just didn't have it when it came to being captain of the whole ship.

I don't know that much about Malzahn, but you better be sure you're getting someone who can handle the periphial issues when you hire/promote a coordinator to head coach.

That's a high risk/high reward guy.  I think he is 5 years removed from HS coaching.  He may be great, but I think he needs at least a couple of more years.

He would be my first choice after Coach Rod.  I think if DB doesn't retain Coach Rod.  Then Mullen and if not Mullen, have Gary Moeller has head coach and Malzahn as OC and coach in waiting.  Have Gary tutor him about being head coach and a Michigan Man.

These are my second and third options.  There is only one option I care about right now.

If we get a head coach, we should be able to get someone who has been a successful head coach.  There is more to coaching than offensive play calling.

Spread-N-Shred or Ground-N-Pound or we just let our current coach see his first full year of recruits turn into upper classmen next year ...  This whole thing has grown tiresome.

Malzhan is an offensive coordinator who has never coached at the college level.  Michigan already has an offensive coordinator struggling to make it as a head coach at the highest level.  Why would they ever consider hiring another one?
