Mallett vs Hoyer in NFL action on Sunday

Submitted by aaamichfan on

So the Browns are playing at the Texans on Sunday, and it will be a classic Michigan - Michigan State  matchup when Ryan Mallett gets his first NFL start for the Texans against Brian Hoyer for the Browns(who has looked pretty good lately). I personally am excited to see what Mallett can do in this matchup, as he has one of the strongest arms I've personally ever seen. I understand many fans didn't want to see him leave Michigan, but him and his father obviously made a wise decision by choosing to transfer to Arkansas.

Given that we have a second bye week and that this season is basically a wash, is anyone using this game to get a little Michigan-MSU rivalry fix?

I always pictured Brady at 9am, in his second hour of watching film, looking over at Mallett who's sleeping one off, and saying "Get him the F out of here...." and Mallett was on the next plane to Houston

I'm down in Houston now.  There's a lot of hype around Mallett right now.  He's being praised for is "big arm" and how hard he throws.  I was at U of M for his freshman year (including the Jimmy Clausen yakety sax game), and it sounds like a lot of the same stories we were hearing when he was recruited.

Everyone down here is calling this game the "Battle of the Brady Backups."  I personally have high hope for Mallett given Hoyer's sucesses.  He's had the opportunity to learn from the best coach/QB combo in recent memory for the last 4 years.  Plus recent history tells us Brady, Rodgers, Rivers and Brees all started as a backups with time to figure out the NFL before they started.

They're playing Cleveland, so it's always a good time when you get to root against a team from the Worst State Ever especially when their QB is from MSU.

In other news, I'm probably the only person in Houston that gets excited when Tim Jamison plays.

(with apologies to Elvis Costello)

I can't quite bring myself to root for these guys, who left too early to really lay claim to being Michigan guys:

-Mallett

-Jamal Crawford

-Jacob Trouba

-Justin Fargas

-maybe Matt Guiterrez, although his pro career was brief enough that it doesn't matter.

Others who belong on that list?

Mallett played for M for one year. I don't know we keep referring to him like he played his entire career here.

He would have been in the NFL sooner and possibly would have made more over his career if he would have stayed. My opinion only here but that was a bad call on Ryan's part.

He's the 60th highest paid QB in the NFL in his 4th year.  He lost a year in his career sitting out at Arkansas where he was drafted in the 3rd round.  Ryan could have beaten Minnesota and probably OSU to boot in RR's system which was hardly a  spread under Nick Sheridan.  He is Heiko's bubble maestro with that arm.

The year Ryan will be missing is going to be his last year - where he will finish in the top 5 QBs in the league in salary... so yeah it's working out badly for him.  If you want to say 700K is what he should be paid in his 4th year given his bazooka calibre arm - I'd even say he isn't doing well now.

Ryan built his 3rd round selection with his off field antics.  The Patriots and father time fixed that.  He would have been better off under RR...again... in my opinion.

other than rooting for ex-Wolverines to do well I root for the Browns. So even though Hoyer is a Spartan and Mallet was in Ann Arbor for a while, I'm rooting like hell for Hoyer on Sunday

Right there with you. Although I was younger, I don't remember a lot of hatred around Hoyer while he was at MSU. He wasn't a Ghostlon, nasty, dirty competitor that a lot of Sparty players get a stereotype or reputation for (esp. amongst Michigan fans). He was just their mild-manners quarterback. Which definitely makes it easier to root for him. Love the way he handles himself, especially with all the Manziel buzz he's dealt with, and how he's handled this team. Go Browns.
