Maize & Blue Scoreboard: Volleyball loses to MSU, but takes State Pride Flag(!)

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The headliner of the day was Michigan Volleyball (6-8, 1-3 B1G) heading to East Lansing after beating MSU, 3-1, at Crisler Center on Tuesday night. With a win in EL, they would take home the rivalry trophy the two schools play for--the State Pride Flag.

Michigan didn't even have to win the match tonight, actually. If they just won two sets, they'd take it home. Well, Michigan did not win.

However. An interesting quirk was found in the rules for the trophy. If both teams split the season series, the flag goes to the team who won the most sets. Michigan had a 3-1 victory in Ann Arbor, and MSU had a 3-1 victory in EL making it 4-4 in the overall sets.

To break that tie, they look at which team had the most combined points in each set of every match. It turns out, both teams had the EXACT same amount of points. So for the first time in history, the two teams will share the State Pride Flag.

Other scores from today-

Field Hockey (8-3, 3-1 B1G): #15 Michigan beat Indiana 3-2 on the road

#19 Men's Cross Country took 1st place in the ND Invite, beating 12 top-30 teams. This is their second crown of the season under first-year head coach Kevin Sullivan.

Men's Swimming & Diving: Michigan leads Iowa, 20-18 in Iowa City after Day 1

Women's Swimming & Diving: Michigan leads Iowa 28-10, and Nebraska 25-13 in Iowa City.

Both of those teams will finish up tomorrow morning in their season openers.

This is a huge weekend for Michigan Athletics as a whole so I'll probably do another 'Scoreboard on Sunday after Field Hockey's clash at #15 Louisville.

No mention of the Women's Tennis team playing at the Purdue Invitational?

The women went 2-2 at doubles and 2-3 at singles.

Play continues tomorrow, starting at 9 AM.  Tomorrow should see more of the women from the top of the line-up get into the action.

Keep in mind that the top 3 players on the roster are in California playing in the ITA tournament.  This includes the #1 & #2 singles players who were ranked #11 & #21 in the preseason ITA poll.  The doubles team competing at ITA is ranked #14.

Why the hell are people downvoting someone just passing along information about results from non-revenue sports?  It shouldn't matter if you like WD or not, this is a good post with no reason to neg.

WD--much appreciated recap.  The non-revenue sports deserve equal billing and support.  They seem to be doing pretty well too.  I'd support you continuing to do this as you are able.

Looks like the volleyball team is struggling a bit this season with that record. Didn't we get some top top recruit last year for the team? I seem to reminder someone posting about that following the Final Four season 2 years ago, saying the best is yet to come.
