Maize & Blue Scoreboard: Field Hockey upsets #6 PSU

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

After an 0-2 start to the season, since the opening of new Blue Turf at Ocker Field, #18 ranked Michigan Field Hockey has gone 5-0, outscoring opponents 22-3 and averaging 4.4 goals per game.

Michigan began B1G play today, on the road at #6 Penn State. They have not won in Happy Valley since the 2010 season.

After going down 2-0 in the first half, Michigan stepped up big time in the second with two goals in the second half, both by redshirt freshman Carly Bennett.

In OT, 5th year senior Ainsley McCallister put it away 4 minutes in to give Michigan the 3-2 OT upset victory on the road.

Michigan is now 5-2 overall and 1-0 in the B1G, earning the HUGE 3 points. The B1G is a very good conference in Field Hockey, as you can tell from the latest NFHCA Poll-

  • #2 Maryland
  • #6 Penn State
  • #9 Iowa
  • #15 Northwestern
  • #16 Michigan State
  • #17 Indiana
  • #18 Michigan

Michigan's next game will be at Kent State on Sunday in Ohio.

Also:

Women's Soccer (7-2-0 overall, 3-0-0 B1G) just welcomed Maryland to the conference, beating them 1-0 in College Park due to a Corinne Harris goal in the 83rd minute.

Michigan is now 3-0-0 in the B1G, and is currently the top dog in the conference at 9 points.

Earlier today, Michigan Volleyball (4-4 overall) hosted Youngstown State at Crisler Center, and swept them 3-0. It was closer than the match score indicates, with all 3 games being back and forth. They take on Kansas State later on tonight at Cliff Keen in the 3rd game of the Michigan Invitational. That game will be shown live on BTN Plus.

They'll wrap the Michigan Invitational tomorrow against EMU, at 7:30pm over at Cliff Keen.

They've had multiple homes. Doing my research for my SuperGuide for VB has shown they've had 3.

Crisler Center, the CCRB (Central Campus Rec Building) and Cliff Keen Arena.

Crisler has been used for a long time though.

Today was their annual Block Out Bullying match. They usually invite local schools to those matches IIRC.

They've played their big rivalry contests there more recently, as well. They're scheduled to take on sparty there on 9/30--a Tuesday night at 8pm which will be live on BTN.

With their facilities and Field Hockey widely considered a dying sport in D1 NCAA Athletics...Michigan could quickly become dominant despite it's location.

Their facilities are better than Maryland who has dominated the sport in some regard over the past 10 years.
