It would have been nice to add another good receiver to this class since the Stonum situation is unknown. Best of luck to him wherever he goes.
January 9th, 2012 at 12:44 PM ^
That it's pretty clear Stonum will be on the team next year(provided nothing else happens).
January 9th, 2012 at 12:56 PM ^
Hoke probably hasn't had a chance to talk to him since they took him into custody immediately following his probation violation hearing. Or did I miss something?
January 9th, 2012 at 12:58 PM ^
In Hoke's press conference that day (I believe it was the same day), he said Stonum's status has not changed. It is also linked in mgo.licio.us toward the top.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:02 PM ^
I believe that was before his probation violation hearing. We have not heard anything since he was sentenced to 10 days in jail.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:15 PM ^
Also, his status is that he's suspended...so Hoke really doesn't have to do anything.
I think people think his status is "he's redshirtted" meaning had this not happened, he'd be eligible to play right now. That's not the case, he was suspended for the year, despite with ND/Michael Floyd lovers want to tell you. He just had an opportunity to use a redshirt to save a year. But if he was a RS Senior, and got suspended for the year, there is no evidence that he would've been done playing football at Michigan.
I'm not sure Hoke is going to really speak on this until the Fall, I don't see why he would have to do so. Unless Stonum does something that makes it absolutely a no brainer...Hoke has the luxury of taking as long as he wants to come up with a decision. So he's suspended. Period.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:03 PM ^
If Webb has a correct gauge on things, it would be wrong to assume that. Stonum is probably gone.
Also, Madaris has moved his visit to Kentucky up to this weekend, so, any hope of UM getting back in on him is now very likely gone (not that we were going to, anyway).
January 9th, 2012 at 1:11 PM ^
Just because we're no longer taking a WR doesn't mean Stonum is back. That logic doesn't work.
- We only have so many spots left...if we've said those spots go to a TE, RB, OL, and CB then losing Stonum doesn't change that, we don't get a 29th scholarship.
- We're not going to rely on freshman WRs...so whether Stonum is here or not, unless it's a Stephon Diggs or Dorial Green-Beckham, all 3 aren't going to step in a play right away. So immediate impact isn't a factor.
- We still have plenty of WRs with experience: Roy Roundtree, Drew Dileo, Jeremy Jackson, Jeremy Gallon are all back. Then you have Jerald Robinson who has been doing very well in practice all year. Toss in Darboh and Chesson and you've got guys there. It's just a matter of production. To me, Madaris isn't a lock to come in and start over all those guys, so adding him is just another body if you're talking about production for NEXT year (which you have to be because we're talking about replacing Stonum).
- It's probably best not to stockpile WRs in one class, this way next year we can get 2-3 big names in Morris' class.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:18 PM ^
We're done with running backs. We'll probably finish out this class with two more commits (an offensive lineman and a tight end).
Unless we can flip Reeves, we're going to end up banking two scholarships for next year's class.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:36 PM ^
I think this will be a full class.
January 9th, 2012 at 4:51 PM ^
with experience. If Stonum is out we have Roundtree, Gallon and Dileo with experience and Robinson, Jackson with virtually no experience and 2 true freshman. WR might be our leanest postion even with Stonum.
Too bad we didn't pull in any of the elite WR's we were in on last year (i.e. Arnett, Stills, Watkins, Flowers, etc.
January 9th, 2012 at 12:30 PM ^
Do we know which side backed away?
January 9th, 2012 at 12:35 PM ^
I think State was his leader (I think Cincy is now, see below) but a visit could have changed that. But with Michigan already getting their WR positions filled it makes sense for the coaches to back away. So at the end of the day I don't think either side is too upset about this.
January 9th, 2012 at 12:35 PM ^
Personally, I probably wouldn't use one of our last four spots on a receiver unless he was genuinely one of the top three or four in the country. I just don't think we have the need as much as some people do. I'd address the DBs and O-line first.
I also can't see a huge need at MSU. Would seem like they are well set with the guys they have already signed, but I think that they have more free spots than we do, so they have better room to take him than we do.
I'd think we backed off, but I'd love to know the real answer.
January 9th, 2012 at 12:31 PM ^
I think MSU was his leader even before he cancelled his visit to Michigan. But MSU just got Arnett and they have a lot of youth at WR. I think UC is in front now because of it, though I don't really know what their depth at WR looks like as of now.
January 9th, 2012 at 12:45 PM ^
Ohio State is now showing interest in him. Could swoop him up in these next few weeks.
January 9th, 2012 at 12:54 PM ^
Last UM player named "Monty?" (And yes, there is at least one)
January 9th, 2012 at 1:03 PM ^
Monty Robbins was a kicker, i believe
January 9th, 2012 at 1:10 PM ^
Robbins was a punter, from Kansas. He boomed an 82 yarder in the 86 Hawaii game that helped break the game open. He also had a nice run off an uncalled punt fake, but I can't recall who it was against.
Bo loved Robbins and even said during the Football Bust that he wished he would have used him at another position, like WR or TE.

Well played... and I even choose to believe you answered without the help of the archive database at mgoblue.com
January 9th, 2012 at 1:45 PM ^
evidenced by my user name.
January 9th, 2012 at 12:55 PM ^
Im guessing Hoke is gonna wait until Stonum's 10 day jail time is up until he talks with Stonum and comes to a decision.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:17 PM ^
Tommy was late to the party on this one reading the transcript of the chat he just had. Webb was saying that there was no way the Madaris visit was happening since it became clear Chesson was a part of the class.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:26 PM ^
An OL (Garnett), TE (Grant or some other top guy), and DB (Reeves). Any other additions are long shots right now. Of course Hoke and Co. might pull off a signing day surprise.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:37 PM ^
Also, don't forget Yuri Wright. We're still in the mix, and he'd be a great addition as well.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:47 PM ^
i'd be amazed if he didn't end up at notre dame. all signs point to him going there.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:49 PM ^
Michigan dropped Wright last week. He's not expected to visit.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:02 PM ^
Erik Magnuson is saying he has a plan to get Garnett to GO BLUE .. this, plus the stuff PeeWee keeps saying on twitter.com, I think Michigan is looking about as good as one can be to land top tier OL Josh Garnett! I like our chances.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:33 PM ^
Madaris canceled the visit, not Hoke.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:38 PM ^
That doesn't mean we still wanted him.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:38 PM ^
Ever since Chessson committed, Webb had been saying that the Madaris visit would never happen. UM hasn't even been in contact with the kid since the week before Christmas. It only stands to reason that the kid would cancel his visit.
January 9th, 2012 at 1:34 PM ^
I think everyone saw the cancelation coming. Did anyone else see the ridiculous class Cal is putting together?
January 9th, 2012 at 1:50 PM ^
There are rumblings that he might visit this weekend?
January 9th, 2012 at 2:42 PM ^
Is that a pure question or did you hear something? That would be great if he did.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:45 PM ^
it's an answer. Armani Reeves is visiting Ann Arbor on saturday.
January 9th, 2012 at 2:44 PM ^
UM on saturday.

Score one for the St. Clair County School System.

The news is five days old so maybe it's stale, but this was posted at the Cincinnati Enquirer and cites the Moeller HC:
Ohio State back in the picture recruiting Moeller WR Monty Madaris
January 9th, 2012 at 3:27 PM ^
C'mon Butch pull this kid to Cincy!
January 10th, 2012 at 8:22 AM ^
If Woody knew he was going to lose a kid potentially to UM he would always try to steer him to ND.
