Michigan Men's Soccer (2-1-1, 0-0-1 B1G) just picked up a point in the B1G standings by tying #4 Maryland in 2OT. The game just finished up on BTN, and it was a pretty good one.

Chaka Daley basically said on the teleconference this week, flat-out, "we're not afraid of (Maryland)".

Indeed. Michigan dominated this game save the final 20 of regulation. OT was ALL Michigan.

Michigan is now 2-1-1, the blemishes being a 1-0 season opening defeat at #6 Creighton (who is now ranked #1) and a 2OT scoreless tie at #4 Maryland.

Pretty encouraging start to the season. Kind of a bummer Michigan couldn't get the golden goal, but they were unfazed in 120 minutes of soccer on the road at the school that just upset #1 UCLA.

Michigan is still undefeated against Maryland all-time. The series is 1-0-2. Michigan beat Maryland in 2010 in the NCAA Quarterfinals in College Park to advance to the NCAA College Cup. Last year, they tied 2-2 at U-M Soccer Stadium.

Some things to potentially be concerned about going forward are captain James Murphy getting hurt during the game and not being on the field the rest of the game. Also, Billy Stevens took a cheap shot to the head by a Maryland player that resulted in a UMD red card. He was held out the rest of the game as his jersey was soaked in blood.

Next up, Michigan faces Detroit at U-M Soccer Stadium on Wednesday at 7pm. The game will be broadcast live on BTN+.

Curious why you have to tweet to Maryland Soccer that they suck. Pretty sure we all agree on this board that tweeting at recruits or college kids is frowned upon, don't think it's much different when tweeting at the account of a college team. It just looks bad.

And they have one of the best fan sections in all of college soccer. Playing at Ludwig is awesome...

Used to work there and it's the only (good) college soccer crowd I've been around with an MLS feel. Never been to Akron, but Maryland soccer is defintely an experience.

Their basketball team was up and down in the past decade, but they always brought it when they played Duke. I don't have the energy to look it up, but I would bet that they have one of the best non-UNC records against Duke recently. Luckily for us, it looks like they might be bringing that to MSU now that they are here.

sounded like the Yost student sections of the 90's and early 00's.  i have no problem with that.  If I wanted to go to a stall pro game, I would, but the passion is missing that you see in a good Univ game.  i wish that they would free the kids o' Yost so that they can reach the heights that earlier student sections reached.

The hit to the face on Stevens was filthy, but I was really impressed that the referees saw it and assessed the red card.  I thought that Michigan deserved better than a draw, but won't complain on the road against the B1G favorites.

Another interesting note, every single time Michigan has played the #4 ranked team, the game has gone to OT.

  • 11/9/2001- L 0-1 (3OT) against Indiana in the Big Ten Tournament
  • 10/6/2002- L 1-2 (OT) at Indiana
  • 10/18/2011- W 1-0 (OT) vs Akron

Thread title... cumong man.  Could it have been any less informative.  Add to the fact that you bitch-tweet at a student section for *gasp* chanting PG-13 insults at the road team!

I always loved Steve Burns and, obviously, what he did for M soccer.  After reading Endzone, I almost am rooting against Chaka Daley.  Obviously I'm not, b/c it's not his fault.  Still, this should still be Steve Burns team.
