M Wrestling Shut OUT by Iowa

Submitted by James Burrill Angell on
I know Iowa is a national powerhouse in wrestling and all, but apparently they shut out our wrestling team last night 36-0, at our house. That means not one of our wrestlers won their match. I'm no wrestling afficianado but are we really that bad that we can't take one single match? Traditionally I thought the wrestling team was usually ranked and carried a few guys who were top 5 in the country and occasionally National Champs in a particular weight class. Anybody more knowledgable know what the story is?

while i am no wreslting expert (my first ever umich match) it was a straight up ass whopping. of the 10 matches we were only even competitive in 2 or mabye 3 of them ... the rest were just guys trying to not lose by 15

I haven't done any looking myself, so I can't back this up, but from what I've heard the team is in the midst of rebuilding this year, and there are several guys who probably could have contributed this season, but they're redshirted. Anyone care to confirm/deny/elaborate on this?

Three big time wrestlers redshirted this year, 2 top 20 recruits, one of which was 2nd, in Eric Grajales and Dan Yates, and a returning all American in Kellen Russell. They will be much better next year. if you need some good news, go down there today to watch them take on #9 Minnesota. I've ran through the matchups and Michigan stands a very good chance of winning.

will be no walk in the park. waas there last night. Iowa is freaking loaded. not a kid on their team who wasn't a multiple state champ. our whole team is freshman and sophmores. It wasn't pretty, though one match did go to OT. Oh well.

Seriously, it's insane. They would show replays of matches in the bars all of the time. After football, it's the biggest sport there - it absolutely dwarfs basketball in terms of fan following. I would not read too much into this - Michigan could be young and fairly good and still get whipped by Iowa. Disclaimer: I don't know all that much about wrestling other than what I read in the Daily Iowan sports section every day in 2007-2009.
