M Track upsets #24 MSU, brings home Dual Trophy

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Today out at Grand Valley State in Allendale, the Michigan Men thinclads knocked off #24 MSU 85-76 in their lone dual meet of the season, indoors or out.

Michigan has beaten MSU in both meetings since they renewed the dual meet series in 2013.

Michigan's next competition will be next weekend. They will have feet on the ground in both South Bend and Akron for two different meets.

Remember: 2/21 will be the final Track event at the U-M Indoor Track Building before it's demolished this summer in favor of the new, unnamed stadium being built out by the U-M Soccer Stadium.

Excellent news. Michigan's running programs are in the midst of an absolutely incredible Renaissance and it's been amazing to watch. Thanks for the update, WD.

I will say that it does look like something more appropriate for a regatta, that trophy, although I don't know if there's a lot you could do to make a boat exhibition on the branch of the Grand that skirts through Ingham County. All the same, it is excellent news any time we beat Michigan State at something.

Lacrosse will have a stadium in that vicinity as well as their own team center that includes offices and locker rooms. Lax hasn't unveiled their renderings of the stadium, but I assume it's coming soon. Also, the construction will begin April/May.

Congratulations to the track team!

Also, here's thanks that Brandon isn't around to sell naming rights to the new stadium.

I love track and field.  Back in middle school I ran the 100M and pole vaulted.  I sucked at both.  But I had fun for a year.

The event I am in absolute awe of is the high jump.  How in the hell do those guys get their entire body that high up in the air and over that bar?  It boggles my mind.

Facilities.

MSU has no indoor facility and Michigan's track facilities are the worst in the B1G.

Michigan is the only school that is incapable of hosting B1G Championships much less an NCAA Championship.

Love Ferry Field and am very sad it's being turned into a parking lot, but the ADept has dragged their ass long enough with track facility upgrades. Ferry Field's outdoor track was supposed to revamped on two occasions and it never happened. So the department just decided to uproot and move the programs to the other side of the Golf Course.

U-M Indoor Track Building used to be the Track & Tennis Building. When it is demolished this summer, there will be a new sports arena built on its land that will replace Cliff Keen in 2017-18 or 2018-19. That arena will be the new home for M Gymnastics, Volleyball, Wrestling, Cheer & Dance.

Cliff Keen will be demolished once the new arena is built so they can expand Weidenbach Hall.

Ferry Field will sadly be turjed into a parking lot. Yeah, you read that correctly. 109 years of history being paved over.

Track is a sport Michigan has basically ignored as far as facilities go. Small NAIA colleges in Michigan have better indoor tracks than mighty Michigan. Because of that, they can't attract top talent and are very rarely relevant information n the Big Ten.

If They can sign Grant Fisher of Grand Blanc and Donavan Brazier of Grand Rapids, things will improve in a hurry. Both are in state and National leaders at their events. The new coach they brought in from Auburn seems to have made a positive difference!

I was on the M track team 1967 - 1971.  When I was a freshman the concrete stands on the south side of the track were still there from the football days.  The track was all weather one of the first, made of shredded tires and asphalt and the outside lane butted right up against the IM building.  You could still see where the old 220 yard straightaway extended down the west side of the field.  They tore down the stands when they started to literally crumble.  There were still goalposts on the field and the freshman football team played their game there.

The head timer for Michigan (no electronic timing in those days) had been one of the timers for the Jesse Owens races where he set four world record in one day.  The Phil Diamond outdoor invitational meet was named after him.

I am really, really, sorry to see it go, but I understand that they need the parking for Yost.

Another thing that would help the track team is to alow football players to run track.  The football team has at leas four state champions in various events and one of those was the number 4 hurdler in the country.
