M Softball wins FAU Classic Title, Now 10-0

The Michigan Woverine Softball team beat the Minutewomen of UMass 5-1 today in the championship game of the FAU Kickoff Classic.  This win raises the Woverines record to 10-0.

EDIT: Stephanie Speierman got the start while Jordan Taylor picked up the win in relief.

The Wolverine offense came into today's game with an AVE of .363, an OBP of .475 with 53 BB and 45Ks.  Today's offense was lead by home runs from Ashley Lane and Amy Knapp.

Next up for the Woverines is to the UCF tournament next weekend.  Good Luck Ladies.

The softball team has been dominate this year.  In ten games, they have outscored opponents 88 to 15, held opponents to one run or less in five games, and hit 18 home runs.  Players thoroughout the lineup are contributing.

If this team stays healthy, we are in for a season to remember.

All this is absolutely true, so don't take this as me being a wet-blanket, but we should remember that our SOS hasn't been as high as it has been in some years.  I'm really looking forward to the Judi Garman classic in mid-March where we'll play some West Coast teams & really get tested.  Great work from the team so far!

Now with 100% less South Bend, 100% more Washington DC.

I agree.  We need to play Az and Az St.  That will really test our metal.

I see us as a 2 loss team heading into the B1G schedule.  Then we sweep the B1G, or maybe 1 loss.  I see us finishing the regular season with 2 maybe 3 losses.

The entire lineup contributes this year.  So. Ashley Lane is on fire along with JT and DS.  18 HR in 10 games is outstanding.

I love the optimism!  I'm going to hold off until I see how we do against elite competition, but thus far we've shown pretty much nothing but awesome.  I've really been impressed with players like Lane & Knapp stepping up - those who've been with the team, but had to ride the bench behind the Viefhauses, Nemitzes, etc. of the world.  It's their turn now, and they're making the most of it.

Now with 100% less South Bend, 100% more Washington DC.

Hutch lost five starters off the 2010 team and has seven freshmen on the 2011 team.  It was smart of Hutch to schedule games against baby seals to build the team's confidence for the start of the 2011 season.

If the 2011 team continues to progress and is competitive in the Judi Garman Classic, it will be another great coaching job by Hutch.

There is something to say about that.  Most players do not really progress until they hit the dirt.  Yea you can work on pitching/catching, hitting and fielding all inside.  But every player will tell you that there is no substitute for playing on a "real" diamond.

So to have an easy schedule (I would not call Tulsa and UMass easy) really helps.  Its equivilent to the addage that the football team's greatest improvement is between games 1 and 2.
