M softball loses 7-3 to Maryland

Submitted by snowcrash on

They have another weekend tournament, and the first game did not go well. M drew 11 walks against the Terp pitcher, but managed just 2 hits. Driesenga went the first 5 innings and walked just 1 batter, but gave up 12 hits. Of course she is a true freshman and still on the steepest part of the learning curve.  Just 2 of the 7 runs she allowed were earned, as M also made 5 errors.

How good is Maryland in the world of college softball?  Are they on the same tier as Michigan, UCLA, Arizona, etc.(those are the only teams I know that are considered good)?

Michigan has a very young pitching group. In the game against maryland earlier, Driesenga (Freshman) got the start. Currently Wagner (Freshman) is the starting pitcher.

There is no Jordan Taylor this season. Growing pains will happen a little bit at first, but I think this team will be good in the long run and win the B1G again.

I think Driesenga might even be a BETTER pitcher than JT when it's all said and done.

I think you mis-understood my comment.

5 errors = poor defense that specific game no matter how you slice it.

7 runs given up = poor pitching performance that specific game (understanding it's a freshman, but yeah, not so good).

2 hits = yea for the 11 walks, but you couldn't turn all those into more runs. Bad hitting for that specific game.

It was not a comment about the freshman pitcher at all really. So I stick by my comment, not a good game for the team today.  They will be fine.  It's the nature of baseball and softball, you play enough that there are going to be some bad ones in there.

Lutetkens scores on a wild pitch in the 5th and Lane just hit a two-run homer into right giving Michigan a 4-0 lead over long island in the bottom of the 6th.

Michigan closes out the game easily, beating long island 4-0 making Michigan's record 5-1 and 1-1 on the day.

Michigan plays #18 kentucky tomorrow at 1pm in a revenge game from the NCAA Regional last season and then takes on the tournament host, florida atlantic at 6pm.

And in other Wolverine "Diamond-Sport" news, Baseball season starts tonight at 7:30pm against pittsburgh in the B1G/Big East Invitational.
