M Softball loses to #5 Arizona St 1-0

Submitted by MGoSoftball on
The Michigan Softball team lost another heart-breaker today. We played #5 Arizona St in the Judi Garman Classic. The score was 1-0. The only run of the game was a home run in the 6th innin for the Devils. Haylie Wagner pitched well enough to get the win. She allowed only 1 ER off 4 hits. She struck out 2 and walked none. The offence only managed 2 hits and the defense committed 2 errors. We had our chances in the 7th but we just could not string together enough hits. This has got to be killing the girls and the Coaches Keep your heads high ladies. We all support you 100 percent

Two close losses to top 10 teams, 2-0 ot Oklahoma, and 1-0 to ASU.  Defense and pitching look like they are at the level we typically expect.  MGoSoftball has said predviously that hitting has struggled against weaker pitching, so not really a suprise against these top teams.  Still lots of time to turn that phase of the game around.

The only problem is that the big ten is weak. We will not get any bumps in rpi. We will have to run the table just to get into the top 16 and host a regional. I have faith in these kids and coaches. I have seen coach hutch perform magic before. We will get it straightened out.

The team is scoring about half as many runs per game as it did last year, down from about 6.5 to about 3.5. The strange thing is that almost all of the returning players are hitting much worse than they did last year. The whole team seems to be in a collective offensive funk and they may be pressing too much, as collectively they are walking less and striking out more than they did last year.

Like Haylie is going to be the #1 heading into the big ten opener. Congrats to her. She deserves it. Sara has pitched well enough to win games but the offense did not support her. Tough break for her. We will get back on track. I'm not in panic mode just yet. As long as we get better through the season and get hot for a long playoff run.
