M softball chugging along, wins 2nd today; now 12-0

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

The M SB team won another game today in convincing style.  They easily defeated the University of Central Florida in a mercy rule win, 10-1.

My pre-season All American pick, Ashley Lane gets the "MGo-game-ball" by going 3 for 4 with a home run, 4 RBIs and scoring 3 runs.  She was ripping the cover off the ball all day.  Bree Evans gets some love too.  She went 2 for 3 with 1 RBI and scoring 2 runs.  Bench player Marley Powers also deserves some love by going 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs.

Jordan Taylor was in near-perfect form today by giving up 1 ER on 3 hits, while striking out 10 batters and issuing only 1 "get out of jail fee" card.  Now typically I give the game ball to the winning pitcher but our offense is just as good as our pitching.  So we will be spreading the love all around this year.

It is good to see everyone, including bench players, get into the action.  This lineup is solid from top to bottom with very little holes.  We have a top 5, 1-2 punch in the circle.  Our offense is a top 5 in slugging percentage, home runs, and runs scored.

We might, just might, enter the Big 10 season with only 1 or 2 losses then pick up 1 or 2 losses in the tough conference schedule.  It is quite possible for our Wolverines to finish the regular season with only 2 or 3 losses.  We will most certainly be ranked in the Top 5 in the coaches poll shortly.

The next victim is Mizzo-KC tomorrow at 4pm.  I will be watching the basketball game just like many others but I will have the SB game on in the background and provide in-depth analysis.

what has been their best win this year? i know baseball and softball start out on the road playing a lot of small schools in tourneys down south so i was wondering.  what are the ladies ranked now? is the team a young team or do they have a lot of senior leadership?  thanks for the updates!

that was ranked the highest was UMass at #26, we beat them twice, 3-1 and 5-0.  Although in my opinion, the toughest game was against Tulsa, winning 4-3.

Most softball teams play in tournaments where the other participants are lesser teams that typically they will not face later in the year.  This is so that coaches can try new things without revealing too much to future opponents.

Think of it in terms of football.  Football coaches want to play lesser teams so that they can try new plays and insert a trick play or two.  The same goes for softball.  Coaches need to see what they have for position players.  This can only be accomplished in actual game situations.  The only difference is that in football, every game has video for opposing coaches to view.  In softball, there is limited video available.

You can see this with Hutch.  She is throwing Stephanie as much as Jordan.  Everyone in the country knows Jordan and what she can do.  No one knows about Stephanie.  She is the "little secret".  Hutch wants Stephanie to master 3 pitches.  This is because during the long stretch run, when Jordan needs a rest, Hutch can put in Stephanie and she will be ready to go.

funny as hell.  I have a problem with calling it the "run-rule".  We all know that it is a mercry rule to "protect" the other team from getting embarrased with a blow out.  This isnt tee ball anymore Toto.  So I think the Yakety Sax is appropriate in this case.

The softball team is having phenomenal year.

Batters throughout the lineup are contributing and they are scoring a lot of runs

My concern is pitching depth.  Jordan Taylor and Stephanie Speierman are pitching a lot of innings.  Hilary Payne, a southpaw, is the only other pitcher listed on the roster.  Her bio shows that she transferred from Loyola Chicago where she pitched in 2009-10.  Do softball players have to sit out a year when they transfer from one school to another?

I say "generally" because the tranfer rule is a bit more forgiving for women's sports than the men's major sports.  Usually a player is required to sit out one year.  However, there is an "exception" clause that would permit a player to transfer and play that year.

There is a "one-time-transfer" rule that permits a player to transfer and start play.  The key here is the school that she is leaving MUST sign off and approve her to play immediately.  If her original school declines, then she can still transfer but must sit out.

The Big 10 has its own rules about intra-conference transfers too.  A SA can tranfer and play if no financial aid is given by the "transfer to" school.  She cannot accept financial aid.  She can transfer and receive aid in a differnt sport without penalty, or if the original school drops the sport.

Transfer rules are very complicated for women's sports.  There are too many factors involved.  I would have to know the details of her transfer.  She can play this year IF she was granted a waiver from Loyola, and since Loyola is not in the Big 10 then the scholarship is not an issue.  I do not know the answer.  My guess is that she is not eligible because Hutch would have used her in the "cream puff" games early on, but who knows.

Pitching in softball is not harmful to a pitcher's arm like baseball pitching is.  This is because the arm motion for softball is a natural movement.  The key is fatigue.  I have seen JC teams with only 1 pitcher for the entire year.  It is not unheard of but not at the D1 or D2 level.  Coaches are constantly working different drills with the girls to improve stamina to prevent fatigue.

Thanks for all the good information.  I suppose as 21st Century sports fans we should at least know the basic organizational principles of how women's athletics work.  It's only fair if we can spend as much time discussing, say, Safety Doom 2005-2010 or D&D-style 4th Down Conversion Tables (all titles presented lovingly and reverentially), we can spare a few neurons for women's transfer rules.  Right?  Right.

sports do not get the attention.  It is what it is.  Most people do not watch women's sports.  I am a huge softball fan only because I really loved playing baseball.  I always new I would coach someday.  But when God intervened and blessed me with 2 daughters, i figured I better "brush up" on my softball knowledge.  That was 20 years ago, and I still coach today.

Girls sports just dont get the same attention as the guys do.  But we have a special situation here at Michigan.  We are the only cold weather team that wins year in and year out.  It is truely worth the price of admission.  I just hope we can get people in the stands this spring.

I hope Dave Brandon and Hunter Lochmann, the new Chief Marketing Officer, realize what a treasure they have in Coach Hutch and the softball team, and better promote them to the U-M community.  Softball has consistently been the  winningest team sport in U-M athletic history

One of the nice things about attending softball games is that you can it sit so close to the field that you feel like a part of the game itself.  There are also no commercial breaks to drag the time out between innings.  When you go to see a softball game, it's all game.
