M Soccer scores late to beat/escape Dartmouth; Return of Sneaky Frank

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

The annual Labor Day game for Michigan Men's Soccer was this afternoon.

Michigan (2-0-1) took on Dartmouth (0-1-0). Dartmouth opened their season last night with a narrow 1-0 loss at #13 MSU.

The Big Green of Dartmouth have won the Ivy League each of the last 3 years. Michigan had never beaten an Ivy League team prior to today, 0-3-2 all-time with most of the results being ugly.

Michigan had a great chance to go up 1-0 early when Ivo Cerda was taken down in the box and drew a penalty kick. Unfortunately he telegraphed his shot and the Dartmouth goalie made an easy save.

Michigan outshot Dartmouth 18-6 in this game, but continued to struggle to find the net. A theme under Chaka Daley the last 3 years.

The storyline of this game would be the return of the Ghanian, Francis Atuahene, who was conspicuously absent from the first 3 games of the season.

Francis "Sneaky Frank" Atuahene checked in in the 2nd half and finally broke the 0-0 tie in the 81st minute with a great goal that sent U-M Soccer Stadium into a frenzy. He is incredibly fast and one of the funnest players I've personally ever watched here.

The Wolverines held on for the 1-0 win.

Michigan is now 3-0-1 on the season and will open B1G play on Friday night as the Wolverines take on Wisconsin in a home game.

Here's some photos I got-

Atuahene checking in in the 1st half for the first time all year

Unrelated, but during the 2010 World Cup I was in Ghana and watched them play Uruguay in the quarterfinals. Watched in a Ghanaian bar. Man, were they some enthusiastic fans. Ghana is really into soccer.

Great game and it was a great experience to take my family. I was thoroughly impressed by the players, who stayed after to sign autographs for the kids in attendance. Several of them thanked my kids for coming and even asked my kids their names and introduced themselves. Really great people on the team.

Francis is a great kid, my son calls him "Magic Man", we go to 5-7 games a year, we just have family issues this year with my Mother-In-law in hospice.
