M Soccer: Big Ten Championship Open Thread
1-0 Michigan. Goal came from one of the Saads.
That PSU student they just showed was clearly hammered and drinking rum or whiskey out of a water bottle.
JoePa supports underage drinking? Extra practice time? Discuss.
Wow. Just as I turned it on
Keep turning your tv on and off. Maybe it's lucky?
Screamer by Meram after cutting in.
Great celebration after getting a yellow against State for excessive celebration
Does anyone know if Soony is expected to stay for another season? He could easily be playing professionally right now but it would be great if he came back.
two great goals, and they are controlling play. great start!
we can steal a player to be our kicker?
How the hell is that not a yellow?
I watched the semifinal against Wisconsin Friday, and that ref let them play physical without many fouls or cards...it looks like the same mentality will be used here today too
I'm not watching, where are we at in the game?
21 minutes left in the first half
21 minutes left in the 1st half
PSU taking shots at Saad now when Saad isn't even on the ball now.
deflected on the way in, and a good save by the PSU goalie
any possible live streams?
Big Ten Network
How far behind the play can you take a guy out? Jebus.
MERAM!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3-0 MICHIGAN
Meram goes end to end on a counter after a corner. 3-0
3-0 Michigan. Great play by Meram. 14:41 to go in the 1st half
JUSTIN MERAM! 3-0!!!
just wow. I actually just did turn back from NFL pregame lol
that was so close...
Just turned the game on, and it's not even close! 3-0 and H. Saad just hit the cross bar - remarkable.
a huge save by the Michigan goalie on a shot from basically the penalty spot....WOW
just under 2 minutes left in the first half, 3-1 Michigan
3-1 Michigan with just under 2 minutes left in the 1st half. Penn State has controlled the action a bit in the last 10 minutes
PSU goal. They've been putting on a lot more pressure in the past 5 minutes.
How was it determined that PSU hosts this game? Do they host the entire big ten tourney this year and it rotates?
Also, what gives with PSU playing on when one of their own players is rolling around on the field in the box? Have only seen them play this game and they seem really douchy.
I think it rotates. Also, they were on the attack and losing in a championship game. It kind of sucks, but you have to try and get back in the game in whatever way possible.
Thanks for explaining the tourney set-up, I was wondering why a 3 seed was playing at a 4 seed (if that's what those numbers mean).
As far as #3 vs #4, there's 7 teams and only the #1 gets a bye. #1 played the winner of #4/#5, we worked through the other half.
hand ball in the box preventing a goal...Michigan PK
Hand ball blocked a clear goal.
Red card for handball preventing a goal, PK for Michigan, and Hamoody buries it.
If the goal didn't secure the victory, it plus the red card almost certainly does.
Is that dude realy complaining about the hand ball call???
Here's a goal for your troubles "sir" !
4-1 MICHIGAN!!!!!!!!!! H. Saad snuck the penalty in low to the left...the goalie guessed right, but it still went in....HUGE GOAL
Can we get more time updates? Thanks!
22 Min Left
It does my heart good to see MGoBloggers talking some futbol.
It's 4-1 Michigan with 23 mintues left to play.
Penn State seems like a bunch of whiners....they are not taking a butt whipping very well. The announcers are horrible. Typical BTN.
You mean typical of soccer in the US before ESPN went balls to the wall to bring in the best announcers money could buy for the World Cup?
The fact that anyone gets to see this game is worth more than the announcers' quality.
this blogging is highly welcome to us non-BTN'ers. Somehow graphic stats just doesn't do it. [And I've already seen Braylon Edwards get booed by the Cleveland crowd, so thanks for the option to what's on my TV.]
For all the warts, at least we can see college soccer and UM win a B10 title. I'll take it.
What is the "next game" the announcer is referring to when speaking about the PSU student who received a yellow? NCAA's? I would think they would start with a clean slate for that tourney.
MICHIGAN STILL UP 4-1 WITH UNDER 15 LEFT TO PLAY
I wonder how Michigan will fare in the NCAA Tournament. They have some good players that's for sure.
4-1 with 8:30 left
Great to not only see Michigan win, but completely dominate. Hats off to Coach Steve Burns and all the players. They've had top 10 recruiting classes the last 2 years and might have the #1 recruiting class coming in next year.
Looked like the European Football version of the spread n' shed today. They really attacked from all angles.
Wow, that's really cool, I didn't know that. Sounds like good things ahead for a while for M soccer.
5 minutes left and the same score of 4-1 Michigan.
It would be awesome if someone could get the highlights of this game. I hate not having the BTN where I live.
I've been in that boat for a while. The U-verse guy is coming on Wednesday and I'll have it! And ESPNU FSN Detroit! All in Burbank, pretty badass.

BIG TEN CHAMPS!
ALL CAPS EXCLAMATION POINTS!
How does this set us up for the NCAA's? What seed can we expect? Is the Big Ten a traditionally strong soccer conference? I haven't followed soccer much in the past (obvi) but I'm interested in it.
4 Big Ten teams were in the latest top 15 of the RPI, including a 3-pack at 12, 13, and 14. Michigan was just outside of the top 25 (#26). The ACC and Big East both have quite a few teams in the top 25. Ivy has 3, then the rest is pretty scattered.
Also, they had 5 teams in last year's tournament out of 48. That seems like a pretty solid share given 20-25 autobids.
FA covers it well--22 autobids (including Michigan) plus 26 at large teams. Last year, the Big Ten had 4 of the 26 at large spots. Top 16 teams nationally get byes, last year 4 of these 16 were Big Ten teams. I don't know if Michigan will get a bye, since they were #26 in RPI last week--it will be a close call.
If Michigan gets the bye, they will host a second round game on Sunday afternoon November 21.
If Michigan does not get the bye, they will play a first round game on Thursday November 18, and it will almost certainly be at home.
The tournament field is announced tomorrow afternoon.
48 Teams make the tournament. The top 16 teams get byes and home field advantage for the first game. After that round, teams travel to regional sites like the basketball tournament. It's single elimination the whole way.
We'll probably get a bye because our season long performance is pretty solid, we're 'hot', and we just beat 2 quality teams (Wisconsin isn't good). RPI is used as a factor in determining seeds, but it isn't the only thing that is used.
The Big Ten is a traditionally strong soccer conference, but that is based almost entirely on Indiana, which is one of the most successful soccer programs in the nation. They've won 7 national championships, second only to St Louis, and have had 10 players win the Hermann Trophy (think Heisman).
This year, the Big Ten is the #1 conference according to RPI, but voter's haven't given the Big Ten any respect, and they have no teams in the top 25. LOL polls obviously.
If the draw goes like it has in prior years, it will be televised on ESPN News or ESPNU. I'll make a thread or something when I find out what is going on.
The selection show will be at 4:30 pm Monday on ESPNU.
AND THE MULTIPLE !!!!!!s BETTER THAN GRAPHICS FOR VICARIOUS FANDOM!!!!
[highlights will be posted on MGoBlue.com, right?]
Anyone know if the Mden or mgoblue will be selling those t-shirts and/or hats? I'd definetly buy one.
On the victory. Go Blue
on the win, good luck in the national tournament.
