M SB loses 2nd game today 6-4

Submitted by MGoSoftball on

The Michigan Softball team lost both games today at Minny.  The first game was 1-0 the second game was 6-4.  Sara Driesenga was in the circle the second game.  She allowed  2 ER off 4 hits, while striking out 4 and walking 2.  She gave up a 3 run bomb in the 3rd.

Sara Moulton pitched the second game as well as the first.  Lets hope she forgets to set her alarm clock and oversleeps for tomorrow's game.  She is a real player.

Sara Driesenga was the leader at the dish.  She went long in the 6th inning, she finished 1 for 3 with 2RBIs and the run scored.   Chiddy went 2 for 3 with 2 RBIs and a run scored.  She went yard in the 4th inning.

Bree Evans batted in the 9 hole both games and was PH for in the second game.  This makes me think that she has a hand injury.  I was at the moo u game and I did not see any injury to Bree.  This was not the reason we lost today.

Purdue split with Illinois today, so hopefully they pick up a loss combined with a M win tomorrow.

MGoSoftball, do you have any experience with pitching stats? I've got all the normal statistics, plus H, BB, and SO per seven, ERA and OBA. I'm looking for any metrics that could compare pitchers, especially ones that are independent of innings pitched.

Yes. I do have experience with stats. The other metrix that I look at is BB to K ratio. Ball to strike ratio is sometimes mis leading because as a coach, I do NOT want my pitchers to throw all strikes.

I break the season into 1/3 and evalute accordingly. Another metrix that I look at is opponent bunting success. A pitcher should field her position well. SB is a bunting game.

Make sure you normalize the data as much as possible.

I don't have data for strikes and balls (except when it leads to a strikeout or walk, obviously), or bunts allowed. What do you look for in a BB/SO ratio; as in, what would your goal for Wagner as an upperclassmen be?

This is every category I have:

ERA W-L APP GS CG SHO/CBO SV IP H R ER
BB SO 2B 3B HR AB B/Avg WP HBP BK SFA SHA

SO/BB or BB/SO? I went ahead and looked at both, even though I'm sure one of them is useless. I also looked at walks plus hits/IP, since it came up a few times when looking for metrics to use. This is what I've got so far:

H/7 ERA BB/7 SO/7 OBA BB/SO SO/BB WHIP
5.4 1.32 2.97 5.62 0.219 0.53 1.89 0.41
5.1 1.66 2.88 6.56 0.199 0.44 2.28 1.14
5 1.97 3.22 7.52 0.213 0.43 2.33 1.79

Any thoughts in your expert softball opinion?

Some coaches like a low ratio of balls to strikes, staying ahead in counts, and first pitch strikes. It would be a lot of work for you to collect that info. Personally, I prefer pitchers that get batters out without throwing strikes (in the zone anyway), the way Osterman used to for Texas.

I don't think Evans being pinch hit for is any indication of a hand injury.

Hutch has been pinch hitting for the slappers any time she needs a power bat - for a sacrifice fly or a homer.

I think Evans batted 9th in Game 1 because her average is lower than the other two slappers. However, she was the only slapper to get a hit in that game, so Game 2 was back to the beginning of the season order with Evans, Sappenfield at the top and Doyle batting 9th.

It seems to me in softball that there is a lot of pressure and emotion that goes with getting or losing the 1, 3, and 4 spots in the batting order. I had noted earlier that I thought that maybe Doyle was in line for the 1 next year, but you can never really know, because doing well at 9 or 2 is easier than doing well at 1. So, some trials seem advisable during real games, and especially when the batting needs a boost anyway. BTW, has anyone seen the performance of the freshman ss at Georgia? She has done well with the stress of the 1 and 3 spots for a competitive SEC team. I had hoped we were going to recruit her back when OSU and NWU were attempting to. A great midwest talent got away from us.
