M Lacrosse POS-BANG/Muppets!

What a win. What a game. What a team.

Michigan defeats Detroit tonight at Ultimate Soccer Arenas in Pontiac tonight.

  • FRESHMAN Ian King ties program single game record of 4 goals. This guy is going to be the career leader in goals, I guarantee it.
  • Kyle Jackson had a hat trick and the GWG in OT
  • Michigan has scored double-digit goals in consecutive games for the first time ever and are now 2-2 when scoring double-digit goals.
  • Michigan has notched their first-ever OT win, now with a 1-1 record in OT.
  • Michigan has now set a program record for most wins in a season, regardless of what happens the rest of the way.
  • The second-ever neutral site win
  • The FIRST-ever win in the Maize uniforms!
  • Their first-ever win against detroit, now with a 1-1 record against the Titans and the MAAC
  • A winning record at 2-1
  • A winning streak! (2)

The most important stat? 14-13. The Wolverines are state champions.

For anyone who isn't familiar with Ultimate Arena, talk about up close and personal. This picture was from my seat in the second row.

Every person who goes to a Michigan game is part of history. In 20-30 years, this playing atmosphere will be considered obscene like the Weinberg Coliseum is today. No protective netting like at Oosterbaan. The PA announcer said "pay attention to avoid a trip to the emergency room".

Michigan's 4th win in program history. I wonder what football's 4th win was like---in 1883?

What an exciting game. I was literally shaking when we went to overtime, just as I was during under the lights 1.

By the way, I think in all 4 program wins, we scored double digits. 14 against Mercer, 11 against St Joes, 20 against Mercer and now 14 against UDM.

I think we've also got a chance to get to 5 or more wins this year. We should be favored against HPU, Furman and St. joes, and should have a chance against Bellarmine and Robert Morris. Maybe even Air Force if we catch them on an off day, but I feel like they match up poorly for us. The rest of our schedule is a good Fairfield team and a bunch of NCAA tournament regulars.

Would certainly take some luck and we'd have to avoid injuries, but it's possible if this team keeps getting better as the year goes on.

Go Blue!!!

I'm sure they've been working their collective tails off since the program moved to varisty, with little success (I've heard lacrosse conditioning is brutal). Now they're 2-1, good for the program's first ever winning record no?

Lacrosse is a great sport to watch on TV.  It's great for the station televising it too, because unlike hockey it has more built-in breaks for commercials.  It's great for people who aren't already lacrosse fans because there aren't a ton of rules to understand and there's a lot of scoring.

I would have to imagine BTN would jump on that pretty soon.  Once basketball season ends, there isn't much content for the network, so it's not like lacrosse is competing with much.  And I bet there would be a decent amount of interest in UM-OSU or PSU-Maryland or any game of Hopkins's.  If they show field hockey (they do), they'll show lacrosse.

As soon as Big Ten Lacrosse starts, you can bet it's going to be on there all the time, especially after March Madness is over. Once basketball and hockey end, there's a sports void that currently is only filled by softball and baseball. Given that the Big Ten is basically mid-major in baseball and lacrosse makes for much better TV than softball, the BTN is probably going to have extensive lacrosse coverage from March-May

Considering the BTN doesn't televise any of the March Madness games (or even the Big Ten tourney, right) that void really starts at the end of the Big Ten regular season, like the first week of March. If the league is smart, they'll make sure all of their marquee games happen after that.

I'm a pretty big baseball fan in general, but I'd rather watch Big Ten lacrosse on TV than Big Ten baseball. That does triple for people who live outside of Big Ten country. Even the top 2 Big Ten baseball teams would have no national draw, but the league will have a number of lacrosse match ups that many lacrosse fans nationwide will tune in to see.

Good for the program, but let's not go crazy.  Expected steps are welcome, but I doubt even the players and coaches are going crazy over surpassing their 2013 win total.

Let's save the muppets for our first win over a power.  That'll be a milestone day and I anticipate it won't be tooooo long.

I think it's all relative.  This is a pretty big win for the program.  It's the first time we've had two wins in a single season (and we're only 3 games in) and it was against a team that many, if not most, pegged as a loss before the season started (and before we lost Gerald Logan).

Considering this team won 2 games over the previous 2 seasons, I bet they're pretty psyched about winning two games in a row.  It's possible that this will be the biggest accomplishment of the season, so muppets are fair.

Other muppet worthy accomplishments for this team, should they happen:

Beating anyone not named High Point, Furman, or St. Joe's.

Beating all three of the above teams.  We should win each of those games, but winning all of the games you're expected to win is hard for any team in any sport.

FYI: It's just called "The Coliseum" on campus.

And while it's the dankiest building on campus, it still houses out national champion men's gymnastics team.

Brad Lott.

22 of 30 on faceoffs.  There's your difference maker.  Didn't play in the first two games (didn't matter against Mercer, but they got killed by PSU on faceoffs).  Real test for him is this weekend against Hopkins.  Their faceoff guy is very good and their wings will be elite athletes.

Even when UM was up 4 in the beginning and looking like they might blow it open considering they were winning all of the face offs and were controlling TOP, it was a very uneasy feeling that everytime UofD got the ball they seem to get a real good opportunity if not score. That really concerns me against teams with better FO guys. But you have to give them credit for finishing off the game since last year they got out to some good leads, but weren't able to hold them

And what a coincidence... I was trying to decide what to wear this morning, and grabbed my Michigan Lacrosse shirt. I felt like there was some reason I should wear it. Either celebrating, or giving them some luck. I guess maybe both! Go Blue!
