M Lacrosse drops to 0-11 in 12-5 loss to Delaware

Submitted by Wolverine Devotee on

Another tough loss today for Michigan. They were just flat out beat today by a hungrier team. And it hurts to say that.

Delaware lead 6-1 at halftime and at one point was up 11-2.

Next up for the Laxers is the biggest game of the season. Battle at The Big House II which will take place at 3:30pm following the football spring game. Last year Michigan came close, losing 12-9 to ohio.

ohio is ranked #15 and beat hobart 10-6 today.

Yeah - this is one of those games, although I didn't think we'd win, I thought we'd hang around for a bit. Delaware hasn't played that well this year and I figured we'd give them a run like we did with Hobart and Fairfield. Guess I was wrong about that.

The OSU game will be fun just because of what it is, but the two games I'm excited about are St. Joes and UDM. We need to pull off one of those.

This year has basically been a disaster, when our young lax team should have taken a step forward.  Even Marquette in its first year has two wins, one of which was against the Air Force team that beat us.  Coach Paul was an oustanding club coach and the driving force behind bringing Michigan lacrosse to the varsity level, but I am starting to wonder if he can compete at this level.  Need to win 2 out of the last three games to win some confidence back, in my opinion.

Although Marquette is in their first season of play, they announced going D1 before we did and has two recruiting classes to our one. They've also had the benefit of a number of D1 transfers. Don't use our season 2 success (or lack there of) as the measuring stick. We're a very young team who has recruited well. If we aren't good in two years, then complain, but not before then.

Marquette announced in December 2010.  We announced in May 2011.  Our first recruiting class graduated from high school in 2011, as did Marquette's.  We have had two recruiting classes - our first recruits are sophomores this year.  No advantage to Marquette there.  However, Michigan's club program was stellar, while Marquette's was average at best, so we should have had a little more momentum - the same momentum that allowed us to compete at the varsity level a year earlier than Marquette.  Marquette is indeed a good comparison, and we should be playing better than they are.  I'm not hitting the panic button yet, just saying I'm disappointed in the apparent lack of progress this year.

worried.  UM (the school) recruites itself.  We will start to get the top tiered players.  Come on, Delaware or UM?????  Which has a better college life?

But at least both football team wears a similar type helmet.

Was at the game today.  Second one I've gotten to see live this season.  This team just doesn't have the talent or experience yet.  Three or four of the freshmen will be good as they develop.  Comparing them to Marquette isn't really fair.  All D1 recruits on that team.  Two years to recruit and get ready.  More transfers.  And still only two wins.  It will continue to be painful for another season or so, then less and less so as recruiting fills in the roster and better players commit.

To be fair, they did a good job today at a lot of things.  Faceoffs were good.  Ground balls were better than they have been most of the season.  That's a key stat they were getting killed at earlier this season and now are improving.  The Delaware goalie played out of his mind.  Too many UM turnovers too, which is a talent thing as much as anything.

OK.  Done with lacrosse for today.  Beat Cuse.
