M fans/alums in Bangalore, India?

Submitted by gnrgoblue on

Today, my buddy is moving to Bangalore, India for his career. He's a regular here, but he doesn't have the requisite points to post this himself. He's wondering whether there are any mgobloggers out there in the Bangalore area who know anything about watching football games there. Are there alumni gatherings? And what kind of TV package should he get to ensure he has the ESPN/ABC games, along with those on the BTN? Any general advice to share? For the time being, he's planning to Slingbox the broadcasts, but he's worried about the quality and reliability of that option.

Thanks in advance for any help and advice you can offer.

My parents are originally from Bangalore.  The slingbox is the best solution...my dad has never found a dependable source of football there.  The reliability should be good, as long as you have a good internet provider.

I slingboxed for a whole year living in Japan and it was fine. You just need good internet on both ends. It also helps that the slingbox was in the basement so I never had to battle over tv stations with anyone else.

I went this past year, and I couldn't catch a Michigan game anywhere.  And that was in Mumbai and Delhi which are much more urban and populated than Bangalore.  If I was lucky they would have 1 college football game a week or every 2 weeks.

I live in Boston now, but I am originally from Chennai (180 miles from Bangalore), and I was in Bangalore for a month last year working. I don't know if things are any better now, but the internet connections even in a city like Bangalore were atrocious. They claim 512 kbps connections to be "broadband." The only place with decent internet was work but most games kick off around 1AM local time there, so work was out of the question.

If your friend can figure out the internet situation, some options outside of slingbox that might work -

1) For games on BTN, there is a per match package that you can buy, and is a good quality stream as well.
2) I used to login with my umich VPN and watch games on espn360.com (now espn3.com). Games that are not on local ABC and subject to local blackout, but are on either ESPN/ESPN2 (this is a fair % of our games) will be available on espn3.com.
3) In a perverse way, the games that are on ABC/NBC are the hardest to catch. For these, you are at the mercy of online streams. I believe the good folks at mgovideo have something lined up for this fall. Otherwise there are at least a couple of passable ustrem/justintv options.

I didn't really try to find out if there were any local UM alum chapters there. There is an UM alumni chapter in India. Check out - http://groups.yahoo.com/group/umich_india/ , and http://www.facebook.com/group.php?gid=149276108622&ref=nf  . The first link talks about meetings, so maybe they do football viewings as well.

I heard Delaney was in secret meeting with regents from the University of Delhi, but things went afoul when Delhi requested Swami Ramanand Teerth Marathwada University and Karnataka University join them in the BigTen.

I was in India last Dec and I was surprised to find them broadcasting an NFL game. I had never imagined that American Football will be on a live broadcast (I think it may have been  a delayed one) in India. There were no College Football games when I was there - but it is not out of the realm of possibility there there may be at least a highlight real there. However, for reliability, I imagine it will have to be an Internet based (slignbox, ESPN3, BTN Stream...).

Bangalore has tonnes of pubs - perhaps the alumni association needs to find one that is amenable to driving the logistics and showing Michigan games. Michigan perhaps has the largest alumni based in India of all the US universities - so it just might work.
