M Baseball wins fourth straight

Michigan defeated San Jose State 6-2 this evening in a (technically) neutral-site game in Stockton, California.  They raise their record to 6 wins & 2 losses.

Junior College transfer Alec Rennard pitched 6 innings to pick up the win.  Senior catcher Harrison Wenson hit his second home run in as many games, and senior shortstop Michael Brdar, from nearby Pleasanton, CA, went 3-for-3 with a home run, 2 walks and a stolen base.

Michigan was helped by 2 good relief appearances:  Austin Batka pitched 2 scoreless innings and Jackson Lamb, who seems to be have nailed down the closer role, pitched a scoreless 9th.  Lamb has now pitched 5.1 scoreless innings in 4 appearances this season.

Michigan is 4-0 on their California spring break trip, with 4 more games to go.  They move to SoCal for the remainder of their trip, playing at Loyola Marymount on Wednesday, and then finishing the week in the "Dodgertown Classic," at UCLA on Friday, at USC on Saturday, and against San Diego at Dodger Stadium on Sunday.

Good to see our pitching has improved from last year. Seems like we have a lot of home games this spring. Osu, indiana, psu, oklahoma, and illinois are all at home. Msu is also home once in late May.

I am looking forward to that Oklahoma series.  I like that they seem to have been getting some quality non-conference home games lately.  The MSU game could be a big one--State might be good, although their schedule has been so easy so far it's hard to tell.

I'm hoping that the pitching staff is better than last season, but there have already been a few bad outings.  Both losses were blown leads, as well as their 2 extra-inning wins.

The one thing that has impressed me so far this season is Michigan's patience at the plate.  Michigan has been averaging 6.5 walks a game, and has an OBP over .400.  Couple that with Michigan's 24 stolen bases (on 25 attempts!) and Michigan has gotten a lot of offense from things that don't show up in their batting average.

I was surprised to learn in the fall that Jackson Lamb had returned for his senior year. There was a report in July that he had left his summer baseball team and was negotiating a contract with St. Louis. Not sure what happened, but it's good to have him back, healthy, and pitching well.

The upcoming games against USC and UCLA will show where we stand this season.  While they aren't currently ranked, both should provide a serious challenge.

Sparty continues to put up some offensive numbers and may be our biggest competition this year (although Rutgers at 1-5 is ALWAYS our biggest rival).  Seriously, is Rutgers good at anything???
