M Baseball Listed In Top 10 Upsets
For those of you unfamiliar with Eric Sorenson, he's THE personality when it comes to college baseball. He is Herbie, Corso, Fowler, Holtz, Griese, Patrick, James, Musburger, Lundquist, Forde, Maisel, Rittenberg, Brian Cook, Orson Swindle, Peter Bean, everyone.
He's working through top 10 lists of the 00's decade of college baseball to kill the off season time when he's not working college football games. His most recent list is top 10 upsets and Michigan comes in at #5.
The next season his Wolverines came into the Nashville Regional confident they could play with… er, I mean, beat the Commodores. And they did, twice, on VU’s home field. The name Alan Oaks will be much-reviled in the Music City, after sending a David Price fastball 380-feet over the left field wall to account for the winning run in the 10th inning of the final game (and giving Price his only loss that season).Michigan came in as the last #2 seed (#32 in bracket) and knocked off the #1 overall seed. This isn't like a #1 vs #2 in basketball's NCAA tourney. With the expectations going into this series, Michigan's upset would be like a 2/15 or 3/14 upset in the basketball tournament. It was that big. That game put Michigan, and even the BigTen back in the spot light in the national media. It was awesome.

I remember following that game on one of those online gametracker type things and just hitting refresh over and over again. It is very surreal going ape-shit over reading a score update on the computer. Trying to explain my excitement to people who knew nothing about college baseball (that guy Price had been freaking un-hittable all year and I think had just gone #1 in the draft) and could care less about Michigan sports was an equally odd experience.
That team also lost a heartbreaker in the super regional at Oregon State (if I remember correctly our guy had a no hitter until really late and we ended up losing a close one) before getting smoked the next day and ending the dream. Quite a run.

I also followed that game (and most of regional) on gametracker. And we should have hosted the regional against Oregon State (they were a 3 seed), but the construction on the baseball stadium had just started (about a week before) and we had no choice but to go on the road.

and the first and, I believe, only OSU hit (in the 9th) scored the only run of the game.

That was an absolutely huge game. I would put that win as a NC State/Jimmy V type of win. Very important for the program and the BigTen.

I remember that win very clearly. It was awesome and made up for a shitty spring for some other sports.

That Vanderbilt team also made the list of top 10 teams that "Didn't Make Omaha"

The fact that they are number one on that list is pretty telling to the caliber of that upset as well.

Awesome post. I forgot that Price played for Vanderbilt.
