Are we sure about that? Part of me is concerned he is doing so well because he is in a recruiting hot bed that he would not have here.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:26 PM ^
I honestly think if we get Miles/Harbaugh most of our decommits will come back into the fold. Going forward, we will still get good recruits and they will get better.
November 30th, 2014 at 3:46 PM ^
No....not at all. Instead we will get a spat of better recruits. Maybe not the softies were used to but the types youd want on your side in a fight

Michigan will always recruit well. Besides, that hasn't been the issue the last few years. Ask MSU if recruiting is an issue.
I know it's one of the first things we ask - but can he recruit? - but let's look at the ability to coach these guys.
November 30th, 2014 at 1:57 PM ^
I'd be okay with Les provided Harbaugh isn't a viable option. He's a winner and his recruiting game is strong as hell. The one thing I question regarding Les is his QB development. Brian tweeted earlier in the season wondering how an elite program can continually have such bad QB play. And he's not wrong. Obviously a solid OC and QB coach could remedy that.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:03 PM ^
So Miles is going to magically decide at the end of his career that he should hire an OC/QB coach to completely run that side of the ball, despite having never given up that much control?
People who love his recruiting really need to look at how many greyshirts, medical hardships, and borderline qualifiers he has pulled in. Then look at how many of those 5 star guys he has are from LA. LSU pulls instate talent, because they ARE the instate school.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:05 PM ^
It's not like LSU is an aberration.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:17 PM ^
In the 2002 and 2003 he had the 25th and 15th ranked class according to rivals. The 2003 class had 31 guys in it. The 2004 class was 65th. Doesn't sound like great recruiting to me.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:21 PM ^
Oklahoma State was 3-8 before he got there. Miles was the one who turned that program around.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:21 PM ^
That's like looking at John Beilein's recruiting rankings from 12 years ago. Miles is a much better-known coach now than he was then. Michigan is also a much bigger name than Oklahoma State, especially the pre-T. Boone Pickens version.
BTW, LSU wasn't much of a program before the turn of this century. Their home state had talent but it frequently left (including to Michigan). Saban and now Miles have been able to lock it up.
November 30th, 2014 at 3:44 PM ^
he went 28-21! His final season was worse than the two preceeding seasons! People think Mullen's record is lackluster, take a look at what Les actually did at OK State and tell me that it was in any way impressive other than beating Oklahoma twice.
November 30th, 2014 at 4:01 PM ^
Harbaugh's record at Stanford wasn't much better. That's what happens when you have to rebuild a program, your record won't look glamorous.
November 30th, 2014 at 5:17 PM ^
Bob Simmons went 26-30 in the 5 years before Miles arrived. Stanford went 16-40 in the 5 years preceeding Harbaugh. Mississippi State, fwiw, split the difference at 21-38 in their 5 pre-Mullen years.
Of those three turn around jobs, Harbaugh's is easily the most impressive.
November 30th, 2014 at 5:46 PM ^
Their respective tenures at the schools:
- OK State 28-21
- Stanford 50-29-1
Preceding five seasons:
- OK State 26-30
- Stanford 16-40
Change in win. pct. vs. the preceding five seasons:
- Miles +.107
- Harbaugh +.346
For comparison's sake, and laughs, I also ran one more:
- Hoke +.053
We're not impressed by that; why should we be impressed by Miles at OSU?

Hackett probably wants to give the appearance of following through on what he said he was going to do, which is a thorough review. I didn't expect anything sooner than Monday, maybe mid week, but probably Monday.

The age thing is such a weak argument.
Saban is 63 and his team is #1
Snyder is in his 70's and his team is #12
They're coaching, not playing.
Hell, even Dantonio is nearing 60
November 30th, 2014 at 2:08 PM ^
Fans who hate Saban and SEC recruiting practices better be ready to turn a blind eye to what he does to get recruits. I honestly don't think he'll be a good fit here because he'll lose his ability to get JUCO players and the things LSU let him get away with Michigan won't tolerate. I'm praying this is purely a move on his agents part to get Les a raise from LSU.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:29 PM ^
Hoke has proven that you don't need to recruit dirty at Michigan. He got top 10 recruting classes without the SEC recruting practices. At LSU, Les probably had to do that in order to keep up with Saban and everyone else. That will not be the case in the Big 10.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:28 PM ^
I'm sure miles will keep the pipeline and contacts he created in LA for the benefit of Michigan.
Get it done Hackett! Les is more...
Love speculation season...
(Grown men sounding like giddy school girls since 2007)
November 30th, 2014 at 3:46 PM ^
I'm pretty sure that kids who are currently going to LSU will continue going to LSU instead of deciding to come play here because Les Miles. Baton Rouge is the draw for them, the next guy in at LSU will be winning 11 and 10 games a season, too, you can book that shit.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:08 PM ^
At SEC Miles wins with over recruiting, no academics restrictions, nice weather...which one of these three does michigan offer that you think he will be able to be just as successful here?
Honestly I am not really sold on some of these SEC guys, they do a lot of shady things there and they get away with them. They use a lot of juco players (michigan NO No), over recruit (also michigan No No), no academic restrictions ( Big No No) nice weather where players practice longer ( Huuuuuge No No in the frozen tundra), bigger high school football states (except ohio and now Jersey we dont have shit)..
So how do we know this guys can succeed here or at a B1G school overall? So far Meyer is the only ex SEC coach who has gone to a northern school and has showed he can do it, BUT ohio also has huge high school football schools and they breed a lot of players.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:25 PM ^
Nice weather? Eh. Have you ever spent a summer in LA? An infernal swamp.

Ok southern weather vs michigan 8 month winter...happy
November 30th, 2014 at 6:47 PM ^
Can you explain the weather argument : is it a) better weather means better HS players because they are practicing year round, or b) better weather so recruits want to come, or c) better weather so better college players because they are practicing year round?
November 30th, 2014 at 2:47 PM ^
SEC coaches don't often leave the SEC, so that's part of the reason there are so few examples.
The same argument from ignorance could have been made against OSU hiring Meyer.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:58 PM ^
Let me give you the other way around and you tell me the reason why SEc coaches "dont leave". Gene Chizik of Auburn..was hired after a horrible season at ISU, he goes to Sssseeeecccc and wins the national championship in two years with juco players and most importantly paid juco QB. As soon as his juco juice ran out he was back in the shitty bandwagon he first came in..Thats why sec coaches want to stay in SEC. Go ahead and hire Gene Chizik here and see what happens
November 30th, 2014 at 6:45 PM ^
Because outside of Auburn's NC season they weren't that good under Chizik. But, dear lord straw man! - nobody said to hire Chizik! Even so,he doesn't fit your argument because he didn't go coach up north and fail.
Your argument is that SEC coaches are successful in the SEC using the SEC advantages (low academic standards, JuCo, weather). So either a coach is too dumb to do that and fails in the SEC or does it and therefore you say the coach worries you. Basically, this is a lose-lose and negates all SEC coaches from consideration. I'm willing to bet there are some coaches who can adapt to the situation they are coaching in.
November 30th, 2014 at 5:29 PM ^
Won't we get/use JuCo players? We certainly see Regular JuCo kids transfer in and there is no problem with it.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:11 PM ^
If Harbaugh doesn't come home I hope it is Miles! He recruits well and his teams are always in the top ten. He is the next best option and actually wants to be here.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:26 PM ^
I'm going all in on the miles bandwagon.
Les as head coach
Pelini as defensive coordinator/associate head coach/coach in waiting.
Boom!
With the NFL trade rumors Harbuagh seems less and less likely. Nothing to be upset about, not like Miles is minced meat or anything.
Speculation season seems to be more fun than our regular season...

I really want to see the LesMiles and the Sabans prove them selves somewhere else besides SEC because they sure as hell havent...I am curious to see how they can coach at a university with more realistic rules
November 30th, 2014 at 2:40 PM ^
Miles was the one who turned Oklahoma State around and Nick Saban was the best coach MSU had until Dantonio came around. Also, don't forget the Big 10 was a great football conference back in those days. Saban had to compete with Michigan, Penn State and OSU at a time when they were all top-notch programs.
November 30th, 2014 at 2:50 PM ^
LesMiles at osu didnt do much besides some 7-5 and 8-4 seasons, which sure as hell is not acceptable here. Also didnt he get accused in 2013 for running a dirty program at osu at that time? Dont you think that might have been the main reason he recruited well and was able to turn it around? Also Saban did well in his last year at msu but when he went to SEc nation he blew up, then he went to NFL and he sucked, went back to SEC and blew up again with success...see the pattern. I think on the inside Saban himself is scared to change jobs because he knows he cant do the shit he does at alabama somewhere else. Even when Texas pulled their pants down for Saban he refused to, and Texas is a gold mine of high school recruits..until i see these guys carry over the success somewhere else then i dont think they are ALL THAT.

Urban Meyer has not lost a regular season Big Ten conference game since he arrived in Columbus 3 seasons ago. I would love to have Miles who has proven he can compete with Meyer. The fact we hired a sub .500 MAC coach last time, and there are people questioning the ability of Miles who has a National Championship is bizarre.
November 30th, 2014 at 3:37 PM ^
its walmart nation, these people. Fact is that Miles is a great coach. so is cameron. lots or morons here who dont want Cameron due to his miami stint but geez that personnel was horrendous. Id love if we got both
