LSU Insiders Speculate Les Miles is Headed to Michigan

Submitted by IvyLeague on

The title says it all. That's the chatter from the folks over there. Also, Les Miles tweeted "Geux Blue.... beat em in the Horseshoe!!" yesterday.

Miles is unconventional and the lack of QB development is unsettling but he wins. Yeah, he's 61, but a 5 to 7 year run of a .500 winning pct. against OSU and MSU, while beating 'the teams we're supposed to beat'  is part of my tempered expectations.

1) Harbaugh 2) Miles 3)Mullen

Schlissel and Hackett can perhaps reign him in a bit but let him be his quirky self.

his LSU office is almost equal in LSU and UM gear, pics, etc. He has a UM helmet next to his LSU helmet. He has pics of his playing & coaching days at UM in there. He has a big picture and plaque quote of Bo in there, etc. He takes great pride in his UM history and I'm told he often uses it in recruiting. I can't deny his love but I don't like him. That said, after either Harbaugh I'd support his hire due to how low I am haha.

nah, Les is a paragon of virtue and pure Michigan values and would never exploit his love for the university to get more money! That would be like Jim Harbaugh picking the NFL over us, just unpossible.

Really, what is the source of this rumor?  Am I missing a link or tweet or something?

When I google "LSU insiders," this MGoBlog page is the third link and there's nothing that comes up as LSU Insiders.  There is (or was) a bayoubengalsinsider.com, but I can't get that to work.

He's my first choice and the coach that will bring us back the fastest. He's beaten Meyer, won't back down to Dantonio and will prep the next coach in his system. It's a different day and it's time to win.

Even if all your assumptions are true and that LSU is just on autopilot . . .  just how did he get the LSU job in the first place?  Why did a school in Louisiana decide that he was the man to replace Nick Saban?

Maybe I'm misremembering but I seem to recall him beating a defending national champion Oklahoma team in his first year as coach (at Oklahoma State) - and then doing it again the next year.

which is the opposite of what you're saying. Just like you can't simply dismiss his record, you can't simply dismiss the context of his tenure at LSU (hired by the defending national champions, being able to put together a top 10 class without having to leave the state each year, having almost no restrictions on his recruiting) or his age from consideration. He is very succesful, he is also old and kinda sketchy.

Basically I think hiring him would be a sign of utter desperation. There is a reason that the only schools who hire guys in their 60's are Florida Atlantic and Ohio University.

B1G recruiting environment from his shady SEC reputation. Les will likely sell more "NFL prep" to recruits than Brady's "develop you into a Michigan Man". Yes, he'll grab a few shaky characters to put top athletes on the field.

A little less purity might be the straightest path to national relevance. Not saying it's right, just a choice some may believe is necessary.

At least Larry Foote will be happy.

very many university presidents are. They have a very tough job of keeping the academicians appeased. Playing to the high ground is the only sensical choice from a public stance perspective.

Don't get me wrong, I think Harbaugh's insistence on academic development/freedom fits perfectly with UM's aspirations. He would recruit good kids and let them major in their passions.

If the choice is win with Les and a few student "mistakes" or lose with Brady and everyone graduates, I think the key alums, former players and power brokers pick the former.

Are the "power brokers" in charge right now?

That's not a rhetorical question. My sense is that they are not, but I don't know.

This particular division has riven the department since Bo retired. The "do it right" crowd won the first round when Carr got the job and Miles left town. It would shock me if they lost power now, when the least athletics-friendly president I can ever recall at the University has just taken over. But I'll bet the other side knows this might be their last chance for a long time to come.

I know I'm the minority but I'm so sick of losing that I don't care what we do anymore. OSU cheats, and I do believe Sparty has a nice steroid program helping to keep them competitive. Meanwhile we are following the rules and just getting left in the dust. I'd rather break the rules and stay competitive than be the dinosaur that we currently are.

Our rivals load the die and are pumped full of Bane venom because we can't beat them anymore or because there's actual proof that they're doing illegal things that elevate their game on the field? Ohio State and Sparty have something of a rivalry. I wonder if they accuse each other similarly. I...doubt it.

options right now seem to be folks we once said we would never allow to come here, for one reason or another.

Some Michigan Arrogance ca. since Bo's lifetime is bound to be lost in the mess since 2007.

All the things you bring before Miles equally describe every team against which he competes, save those, like Georgia, who try to win the right way in an inclement environment.

I'll wait to see what happens. I don't really have much control over it.

The President of the University has expressed concern over Michigan's recruiting standards, as respects academics, now. I'm guessing the next coach will be someone that the department believes would do things the right way even in an inclement environment.

when you get your pick of athletes at Louisiana.

Plus, if Michigan wants an ethical coach, Les Miles wouldn't be in the list. He has done a lot of shady stuff off the field. See Oklahoma State for example.

If Michigan wants a coach who can develop QB, Les Miles would not be on the list. Lack of QB development at LSU is alarming. That's LSU fan's biggest complaint on Les Miles is lack of QB development that could've seprated them from the great and elite programs.

Nobody loves the sad state of Michigan football more than Les Miles.  Every single time we are looking for a new coach, someone floats his name -- probably his agent -- and he gets a huge raise for staying at LSU even though he was probably going to stay anyway and wasn't even offered the Michigan job.  Shit, that tweet alone is probably worth another million bucks a year.  I would like to see Les as the coach of Michigan, however, either way he is the big winner.
