LSA Magazine- Wolverine Traditions

Submitted by Glutton on
John U. Bacon wrote a somewhat interesting article on Michigan Football traditions in the Fall 2009 issue of LSA Magazine-- worth a read. Sorry- don't know if it's available online. Two items I found of interest: "Clemson players touch Howard's Rock before games, Oklahoma's mascot rides the Sooner Schooner after touchdowns, and Ohio State fans sing "Hang on Snoopy" at the slightest provocation-never bothered by the fact that they've got the name wrong." "One overlooked aspect of "The Victors" separates it from all others: While other schools' songs urge their teams to make a great effort in the hopes of winning, "The Victors" celebrates a crucial contest already won....The first Michigan tradition was confidence. Hail, Hail." Hail, indeed. Go Blue

This song came on the radio yesterday while I was running errands and I just yelled, "Oh, fuck you!" at my car radio. My non-M (or any other football) fan girlfriend gave me the, "Have you officially lost your mind and do I have to jump out of the moving car?" look, so I had to backtrack and explain why the song is pure evil. It was a great teachable moment for her. That being said, maybe I would prefer Andy Katzenmoyer's Peanuts gang version of the song. Thanks for the link to the article, it never hurts to be reminded that OSU fans are really dumb. GO BLUE!

That's one of the best things about John Bacon. He'll give you an informative story about the origins of another college football team while also lambasting their many, many flaws.

Bacon is great, but I have realized he always talks about the topics he is writing articles in class as asides. Which is cool, but then whenever I get down to reading his articles, its like oh yeah he told me that last week. To his credit, however, he is just as amusing in person as he is in print.

"there isnt a michigan man alive who doesnt get a chill up and down his spine when the michigan bland plays The Victors." the quote alone gave me chills. how lucky are we to be michigan fans?

I love the Victors, as I grew up in an auto worker family 20 miles from Ann Arbor, and that was the song every Sat over and over on WJR. Then the game started. When Michigan won, they played it a few more times on Sun morning. After going there, though, I like the Yellow and Blue even more.
