Lou Holtz says ND will beat Michigan and go all the way the rest of the season to a BCS bowl.
September 5th, 2011 at 7:59 PM ^
Western had 58 offensive plays to Michigan's 39 when he argues that Michigan was unimpressive based on total yardage. Western averaged 4.8 yards a play to Michigan's 7.4 yards a play. Of course he is Lou Holtz so I wouldn't expect him to be make any sense.
Just for comparison if Michigan would of had 58 plays on offense, averaging 7.4 yards a play they would have finished with 430 yards to Western's 279.
Michigan averaged 7.3 yards a carry, had one penalty, no turnovers, and averaged 7.5 yards a pass. That isn't eye-popping, but I don't see how you could argue that they were unimpressive offensively. I guess if Denard doesn't have 300 total yards in the game, that means the offense was unimpressive to somebody like Holtz.

Holtz cracks me up. There are a lot of point-counterpoint type pairings on ESPN that drive me nuts, but I actually like watching him and Mark May. You can tell that they really get along, because he basically called May an idiot the other day and the only one who took offense was Rece Davis. Priceless.
September 5th, 2011 at 7:47 PM ^
Holtz says that EVERY year. In fact he picks ND in almost every game they play. His credibility as a sportscaster is almost nonexistent. Not a big deal.
September 5th, 2011 at 9:31 PM ^
It's just schtick. Mindless entertainment. Nobody really cares what he says, even him.
September 5th, 2011 at 7:49 PM ^
Lou Holtz is a moron and spits too much when he talks
September 5th, 2011 at 7:54 PM ^
How did you understand what Lou Holtz said?
September 5th, 2011 at 7:54 PM ^
Holtz said it so confidently and arrogantly which was the surprising part. I don't think nd will be ready for what's about to be inflicted upon them, kind of like what happened in 2003 (38-0). The game will be close but Michigan prevails 31-14.
September 5th, 2011 at 8:01 PM ^
In all seriousness, shouldn't this guy be running the betting pool somewhere in a senile, old folks' home? Because I think he still thinks it is 1988!!
September 5th, 2011 at 8:08 PM ^
whenever he picks nd, which he lost last weekend when he picked USF (blood is thicker than money). Also hasn't he picked nd to go unbeaten every year? he always says they have more talent than any team on their schedule. Must have a poor coach?
Go Blue!
September 5th, 2011 at 8:11 PM ^
So Lou points out that in 3 quarters an offense that is under a new system only barely outgained a well established offense with an upper classman quarterback?
Sounds almost like a compliment to me. I know we've all become accustomed to old unlce Lou having his ND bias, but at some point can't he be more like coach Lou? Instead, challange ND to do better, rather than have constant optimism and praise for a team that just had 5 turnovers to a middling Big East squad.
September 5th, 2011 at 8:44 PM ^
Would have said something like, "I don't know how in the world we're -- oops! -- I meant 'they're' -- going to be able to field a team this week. Crist doesn't look like he could make a throw out of a wet paper bag, and Rees is green-blue color blind, so he's liable to mistake Troy Woolfolk for Michael Floyd more often than not. Cierre Wood is so gimpy that it wouldn't surprise me to see him wear a handicapped sticker on his helmet. And the defense couldn't hold the University of South Florida to less than 23 points. I don't see how they're going to be able to contain a squad of Felician Sisters in full habits, let alone Denard Robinson and the rest of the Michigan offense...."
September 5th, 2011 at 10:11 PM ^
Middling you say? Because they are coached by the greatest coach in the country, they are even better than the best team in the country. And Dayne Crist is faster than Denard Robinson. And Brian Kelly is an upstanding level headed encourager of fine young men.
September 5th, 2011 at 8:13 PM ^
This must be the first time he has said something like this.
September 5th, 2011 at 8:24 PM ^
How many inches of rain fell in the ESPN studios?
September 5th, 2011 at 8:28 PM ^
Lou Holtz spit on my prediction
September 5th, 2011 at 8:30 PM ^
Would be real tough for ND to pull off. Not going to happen if they go 9-3. They can only afford to lose one more game and even then it'd be close (but they'd probably get it over most over 10-2 teams because of fan base). There are 10 BCS slots and if the past is any indicator of the future, here's what the BCS teams will be
2 from SEC
2 from Big 10
ACC Champ
Pac 12 Champ
Big East Champ
Big 12 Champ
Boise St/Other Mid-Major
That's 9 of the 10 slots probably filled. Keep dreaming Lou.

You lost me at "Lou Holtz says."

September 5th, 2011 at 8:53 PM ^
...I heard him say ND would beat
MYTH AGAIN.
September 5th, 2011 at 8:54 PM ^
We outgained WMU by 9 yards on 17 less offensive plays.
September 5th, 2011 at 9:03 PM ^
He says the same thing every year. He picks ND to win 11 games, Mark May looks at him like he is nuts, explains why it won't happen, and is proven correct as the season rolls along. It is like clockwork. Holtz can't help himself.
September 5th, 2011 at 9:14 PM ^
It's like how Chris Berman jokingly picked the Bills to make it to the Super Bowl every year for a while after they made four in a row. Except Lou is probably serious.
September 5th, 2011 at 11:09 PM ^
Any idiot other than Mark May can play that role. Let's not give him undeserved credit. That's like crediting someone for their brave stance against raping.
September 5th, 2011 at 9:36 PM ^
I didn't know that Lou smoked up.
September 5th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
Here's what I hear every time Lou Holtz opens his mouth:
DERP DERP DERP DERP DERP...
September 5th, 2011 at 9:42 PM ^
Unlikely that Notre Dame can beat MSU, USC and Stanford...they have a shot this week because our defense is still a work in progress. They should be thankful if they make a bowl game.
September 5th, 2011 at 9:51 PM ^
Just watched the Miami/Maryland halftime show. I swear Holtz is drunk.
September 5th, 2011 at 9:52 PM ^
I think that LH has said that every year for the last several years. We have beaten them 4 of the last 5 years so I say let him talk all that he wants.

September 5th, 2011 at 10:22 PM ^
You win... Post of the night. I lol'ed pretty hard at that one. Thank you
September 5th, 2011 at 9:55 PM ^
However, I have a bad feeling about this one. This will come down to defense and I have to give the edge to ND. My heart says UM but my head tells me ND. Hope I am wrong.
September 5th, 2011 at 10:13 PM ^
Holtz, May and Millen all in the same broadcast. Reminds me of Tim McCarver on a good day.
September 5th, 2011 at 10:30 PM ^
To Hell with Notre Dame. That is all.

September 5th, 2011 at 11:48 PM ^
There is objective sports analysis and then there is bombastic sports chatter. Obviously Lou's babblings are less the former and much more the latter. I hear a win for ND is predicted by dear 'ol Lou - if I were a betting man I'd put a wager on the Maize & Blue. Now we all have our likes and druthers, but in my heart I feel its going to be a W for our beloved Wolverine brothers.
September 6th, 2011 at 12:25 AM ^
Excessive spitting can make you delusional.
Also, FYI Lou, when one team scores twice on turnovers the other team ends up getting more plays, and yards. Classic misuse of a statistic.
Idiot

prediction every year.
September 6th, 2011 at 9:50 AM ^
...haterated on Howard Cosell, too.
i find ol lou highly entertaining. just glad he aint from MICH
he was a helluva coach
September 6th, 2011 at 10:54 AM ^
I love Lou if only for his entertaining, polarizing nature on gameday. But the segment this past week of him going back to his hometown high school to coach the kids for an afternoon was a train wreck. The kids couldn't understand a single thing he was saying, and were probably asking themselves why this babbling relic was spitting on them...
I say, keep Holtz on College Gameday. He keeps us all humored.
