Per David Brandon twitter it appears there will be a party in Crisler
mesmerism! presidential assassinations! circuses on fire!
sometimes it sucks living in PA.. wish i could be there if not in the ATL
I don't think this deserves a thread, but does anyone know what happened with Stauskas. He only played 18 minutes, and wasn't on the court when we needed to make free throws. Was he hurt or just benched? He also finished with 0 points...
Benched I think. Couldn't hot shit and wasn't cutting it on D.
to hot shit on the court Monday night, I would suggest either an all bean burrito from Qdobe or some White Castle sliders for dinner Sunday night. Either one of those should do the trick.....
I'm guessing it's just that Caris was having a good game (unusual for him of late), while Stauskas' shot was off. Outside shooting was really all Stauskas was going to provide this game, so since that wasn't happening, so sense in keeping the better defender (LeVert) on the bench.
That's a good question. Now you have me all worried.
Maybe because his shot was astoundingly off while LeVert and Albrecht were raining threes from the Georgia/Florida border would be a part of it, not to mention the fact he's a defensive liability.
Basically, if he's badly bricking that shot from the corner, get him off the court.
Good answer. I hope that's all, and that he's ready to go later. It is true that Levert seemed to be well-suited to handling the zone, and you don't keep THJ or GRIII on the bench either; Stauskas probably just the odd guy out here.
I'm just suprised Beilein didn't put him in when we were clanking free throws. It's possible that he didn't want Stauskas going into the game cold and the outcome still hanging in the balance. THJ knocked his two down ice-cold though, was suprised he wasn't given the ball when Cuse started fouling.
Stauskas hasn't been automatic on the line, either.
Frankly, no one on this team has been down the stretch this year. We've left WAY too many points at the stripe in this tournament. There's really no excuse for it. If I'm Coach, I'm taking the Tom Izzo approach to free throws in drawing up the offseason workout plans. Make those kids shoot free throws until they can't take it anymore.
I told my wife this evening: "We're watching our season drain away at the free-throw line." Fortunately, I was wrong--but this team looks rather uncomfortably like that Memphis team that came so close to winning at all until their one achilles heel, foul shooting, finally cost them everything against Kansas.
Yeah, I've been absolutely terrified in late-game FT situations. It cost us the B1G title (Indiana game) and very nearly the national title tonight. At this point maybe it is what it is (Beilein can't do a whole lot about it in one prep day) but I definitely don't want us to have to shoot a bunch on Monday night.
Caris was hitting threes and playing his normal defense. He is quicker and a better defender and if Stausk is not hitting his shot he is a liability. Coach went with the hot hand which I applaud - similar to going with McGrary late in the year after standing by Morgan earlier. Many coaches would not budge - thinking of Carr on this end in football.
Stausk is here for offense at this point. If he is cold, he sits. He doesn't bring much else right now. Hopefully that changes as we go forward - CJ Fair was ripping him up (and GR3 and THJ).
I was surprised how little Spike played in the 2nd half as he was effective in the first in his limited time and Stausk was out most of the 2nd half.
The problem was he was terrible at basketball. Good news is he has a chance to he better Monday
I sure hope so
If you're not in Georgia, you'd better be at Crisler.
What if I live 12 hours away in Minnesota? That's a bit of a hike.
I'd have to deal with crossing the border and a few hours drive
is that they likes laverts versatility to beat the zone rather than stauskas sitting in the corner.
whatever it was it worked. and he was still on the bench in uniform (not in warmups) at the end of the game. so I would guess not injury. maybe he was sick?
Besides the Florida game, Stauskas' shot has gotten extraordinarily erratic over the last two months. When he's on, he's unbelievable. What we saw at the beginning of the season (remember that thread asking if he'd win the NBA 3-point contest?) was a hot streak. What we're seeing now is a gifted freshman shooter with tremendous upside.
Stauskas is a great player, but he's not a complete player yet. He's not a consistent player yet. We've seen him commit astoudingly bad defensive breakdowns just as much as drain shot after shot.
For my money, I'd take a chance on LeVert, Albrecht, GRIII, etc. splitting his minutes amongst themselves if Stauskas isn't showing signs of life on any given night. It's not worth waiting for the upside to kick in at this point.
EDIT: They've now posted a full press release.
