A look at year-end team stats

Submitted by dahblue on

I was curious, now that the "regular season" is over, where Michigan would end up in the statistics.  The NCAA has a nice site with a wide array of stats that I thought folks might find interesting.  I'll highlight some of the positive ones, but feel free to click the link then see what else might look interesting:

http://www.ncaa.com/stats/football/fbs/current/team/1043

Scoring Defense - #7
Fewest Penalties/Game - #6
Red Zone Defense - #4
Scoring Offense - #23

There's plenty of other stuff, but it's certainly encouraging to see our team excelling on both sides of the ball.

I think this year was as close to a best case scenario as Michigan could have gotten. Really excited to see how Denard progresses with another off-season in this system.  If we can find effective replacements for Martin and RVB (which is a huge if I know), I think we're going to get our first B1G title since 2004 next year.

I think we will be good at DT/NT next year. The basis of my optimism is the amount of attention guys like BWC, Q Washington, Pipkins, Rock, and Ash are going to get from their excellent coaches; Hoke, Mattison and Montgomery. We have some talent on the interior D-line, let's hope BWC wants to lead by example his senior year like Martin and Van Bergen did this year.

I hate to be a downer but I feel like all the defensive rankings are really skewed in the Big10 by the ineptitude of the offenses.  Outside of Wisconsin, no offense seemed that good over the entire season.  Teams showed flashes of competence but on average I felt like there were a lot of offenses shooting themselves in the foot, not being stopped by the defense.

Maybe I'm wrong and just didn't see the right games but the Big10 seemed pretty bad this year as a whole.  We'll have to wait til the bowl games to get a better idea.

And SEC offenses have looked like world beaters this season?  You can always make that case in my opinion for all defenses in the top 10.  The defense has consistently performed over a 12 game season and allowed 24 and 28 points in our losses.  The stats bear out the performance in my opinion.

If it helps to add any perspective, the B1G offenses (with the exception of OSU's first 10 games) weren't much different than last year.  You can even argue that a number of offenses were better (MSU w/4th year Cousins and Cunnigham, Wisc w/Ball and Wilson, Purdue w/o 5th string QB, NW w/Persa, etc.).

Fewest Penalties/Game - #6
This is very telling.

When Hoke arrived, he preached teamwork, accountability, toughness, and discipline. All of that was written off as coachspeak, but we have improved by leaps and bounds in every single department. Hoke uber alles.

An analysis I'd like to see eventually lists a comparison of key stats (like the above + others) between 2010 and 2011.  This would also include numbers like avg. time of possession, turnover margin, penalty yards per game, avg. # 3 and outs,  yards per run, yards per pass play and so on.  Then, a % decrease or increase.  I was going to start working on it, but have been too lazy lately.

I think the most encouraging things about Denard going into the bowl game and next season as well is that denard has been throwing the ball more accurately down the field down the stretch, and you dont see him missing wide open receivers like he did in the start of the season.  Also, he is now taking off when the play down the field isnt there which will eventually suck up the safeties as the game continues and will help open up his receivers even more.

If there is one thing I've learned from reading MGoBlog so much over the past couple of years is NEVER TRUST STATS. Raw numbers are encouraging, and to the eye the team has definitely improved in all areas, but if it's not adjusted for opponent, number of drives, etc., then I'm not overly excited.

turn around for the defense this year. Brady Hoke is the real deal, but the job done by Greg Mattison is bordering on legendary. Before the season, virtually everyone was saying how pleased they would be if we improved into the 50's nationally for defensive rankings. These numbers show our expectations weren't high enough to match up with the coaching jobs performed this year and the heart of the player's on this team. While this isn't one of the best teams to suit up all time at Michigan, true fans should recognize the outstanding legacy of this squad.

...the turnaround is quite amazing, and my hope is that we can at least stay in the top quartile even with the loss of Martin and Van Bergen after this season. The offense just seemed to get better and more efficient as the season progressed, culminating in pretty balanced performances in the Nebraska and Ohio games. I couldn't be more pleased given some of my expectations of somewhat more  meager improvements, if you will, back in August.  I am very glad to be incorrect, in this instance.
