A look back at 2007

Submitted by bo_lives on

Well, user Jake Blues referenced Brian's 2007 MSU postgame in another thread, and I went and read through the whole thing - here are some bits and pieces that would have made me laugh manaically at Sparty's inadequacies back then but now make me go :'(

(In response to Hoyer's quote "Let's put it this way, if anybody hadn't taken this personal up until this point, it's personal now," Hoyer said. "It just shows what kind of class he has. "Sooner or later, the little brother, you want to put us that way, you get pushed around enough, the little brother fights back and kicks the other brother's ass.")

Oh, now it's personal? You mean it's unlike all those other games when a host of kids who never even got looked at by Michigan (save three or four per year) played their instate rival and then immediately collapsed afterward? Oh shit. We are in serious trouble now. It's personal. I am liquidating my assets and moving to Tahiti, as Michigan will never beat Michigan State again.

Well, if not for the Denard/Dileo/Gibbons miracle... Oy. Anyone know what plane tickets to Tahiti are going for these days?

I know, I know. You're probably wondering "what radical new direction will this knight errant take the hallowed Spartan program?" Well, let me tell you: every year Michigan State will jump out to a fast start by beating a bunch of awful nonconference teams. When they play at Notre Dame, they will win. Everyone will get all hyped up for the Michigan game, which they will lose. On the off chance they do not lose, they will arrange to lose to Indiana or Northwestern or some such team to restore the cosmic balance. After the Michigan game they will collapse wholesale. Sometimes they will go to a bowl in Detroit. Other times they will stay home and cry softly into their BEET MICHIGAN cardigans. They will never, ever go to the Rose Bowl, and every year MGoBlog will start its Michigan State preview the same way. Yes, friends, times are a-changin' in East Lansing.

Now, please don't take this the wrong way - I love Brian and the blog and was basically laughing right alongside everyone at the time... but now I am ready to cast out my demons and admit we were guilty of hubris. May the football gods accept my repentance and have at least a tiny smidgen of mercy on Michigan Football this Saturday.

Anyway, Go Blue!

This actually sounds a lot like UM 2009-2013... how fucking ironic.

It was basically the shittiest, douchiest thing I've ever read, especially in retrospect.

It's nice to see that Brian's become a bit more level-headed as the years have gone by.

I would not be too hard on him.  Yes he snarked at everything that moved back then, which could get really old.

But imagine if Indiana started talking some trash about how they were going to dominate in the conference in the future.  Our first response would not be restraint.  Or when Purdue actually tried it with Danny Hope.  Our reaction was to laugh, and rightly so.

You only know what you know at the time.  Your only reaction can't be to assume that every team is going to turn into Alabama just to be safe.

Dantonio turned it around night and day from JLS.  In scheme, in attitude, even in Sparty, No!  He gave that team an edge and some enduring composure.

He was a perfect fit for that program.  Shows you what a coaching change can do.

While I have also begrudgingly come to accept the fact that Dantonio has implemented a system that has generally sustained success and is a good coach, let us not forget that success doesn't happen in a vacuum. I firmly believe that MSU has directly benefitted from the failures of our program over of the course of the last eight years. Not necessarily from a recruiting standpoint, but more from a subjective, feelings-ball perspective. We all know that the in-state game is MSU's super bowl, it always will be, and we also know that their seasons, before the downfall of Mich, were a series of premature hopes followed by crushing defeat, which led to eventual collapse. Now that they're winning their Super Bowl quite often, their late season games take on more meaning and become something to actually play for. This, I believe cannot be discounted when attempting to describe their success.

This is the case through history too ... MSU was good in the 50s to 60s, we had the 70s-90s, and they have comeback for the recent 2000s. That is how this rivalry works - one is up and the other down. This is the opposite of the Mich vs OSU rivalry - it thrives on big name teams playing their best football. Many more ranked battles in that history that with Sparty. Just kind of the nature of thins.

We tore this thing down ourselves as a result of organizational incompetence, unfairness, and selfishness. Things I thought that I would never see from my beloved program. Dantonio, like any good vulture, did what he was supposed to do with the carcass.

This is the best comment on this thread.

WE did this.  This is not something Dantonio did to us.

He got their heads out of their asses and fielded a competitive program, but he still would not be able to walk all over mid-90's Michgian.  We're the ones that allowed that.

And we're the ones that need to fix it.

It would be nice to have some more guys with the amount of heart that Hart had. Nowadays the players are groomed to say things like "wins and losses are just a statistic. "

I didn't love the Hart comments at the time. Still don't really. That stuff always seems to have a way of coming back around and biting you in the backside. However, as a friend of mine explained to me when we were talking about this, Mike Hart was CORRECT. Up until then (and even including recent history) the overwhelming balance of these games were won by Michigan. Games that MSU won frequently were controversial (Clockgate, Phantom PI on Desmond in the end zone, etc). Very typical of a match up between a dominant big brother and an upstart little brother. I'm not saying Hart should've said it...but...he's not wrong.

Guilty of hubris? Who isn't when they're winning? Compare Mike Hart repeating what they had been quoted saying the week before ("if they think that, I'm gonna think that") to a team that plants a flag in someone else's field. Come on. Don't buy into the revisionist narrative.
