[LOCKED] Semi-OT: NCAA to relocate championships from North Carolina for 2016-2017

Looks like the NCAA is following pro sports' examples and pulling events out of North Carolina due to their sexual orientation and gender identity laws.

Affected championship games:

  • 2016 Division I Women’s Soccer Championship, College Cup (Cary), Dec. 2 and 4.
  • 2016 Division III Men’s and Women’s Soccer Championships (Greensboro), Dec. 2 and 3.
  • 2017 Division I Men’s Basketball Championship, first/second rounds (Greensboro), March 17 and 19.
  • 2017 Division I Women’s Golf Championships, regional (Greenville), May 8-10.
  • 2017 Division III Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships (Cary), May 22-27.
  • 2017 Division I Women’s Lacrosse Championship (Cary), May 26 and 28.
  • 2017 Division II Baseball Championship (Cary), May 27-June 3.

The release does mention that if a North Carolina team earns the right to play a championship game in their home state, it will be held there.

MOD EDIT - One way you can avoid controversy is not post Breitbart articles generally, or indeed inject more politics into the discussion when there is already politics in the discussion. - LSA

I've seen several people upset at the statement about Baylor but what part of it is false? How do Baylor and Penn State get slapped on the wrist for things that literally ruin people's lives while North Carolina's random citizens get punished because the 4-5 transgender people at these events would have to use their biological bathrooms?

Whether the laws are just or not (I personally think it's much easier for everyone to just to have a third gender neutral bathroom) I don't see how moving the events out changes anything. The governor will still be a racist/sexist/transphobic/bigoted/intolerant/whatever buzzword you want to use and nothing will likely change as a reslult of this. At least wait a couple months until the NC residents have a chance to get the ruling overturned if they so desire.

Plus, have you ever had to sit down (emergency-situation-style) on a traditional toilet in a crowded venue after 5000 men have pissed in it? Seriously fellas, we're all adults here. Can we NOT piss willy-nilly all over the god damned stalls when we have to use those to piss? It's like men have a contest: "Who Can Get More Piss All Over The Place."

I mean they want to do something that has no basis in science then let them. That's their choice. But yes, 100% confine them to a seperate bathroom if they won't use the one that coincides with their gender. I mean read this: http://www.breitbart.com/big-government/2016/04/23/twenty-stories-provi…

While a gender neutral bathroom might not be the best permanant solution it's clear that an all out free for all is much more harmful.

(Side note: comparing this to segregation is absolutely ridiculous. These people have nothing but their "feelings" stopping them from using a restroom that is just as good as the one across the hall).

So no argument from you on the 25 examples presented there? I'm not shocked, when in doubt throw insults, right? Also thank you for the buzzword of "ignorant." I only have like 2 more to go this thread before I hit the "offend a SJW" jackpot.

Uh... Breitbart isn't exactly a bastion of independent news and analysis, first off.

Second - the stories that they cite have nothing to do with transgender bathroom laws. It has always been, and always will be, illegal to peep or video tape people in bathrooms - that's why they were charged. Nearly all of the stories are in states that haven't tried to issue these protections. Only one as far as I can tell is actually citing a gender rule, and their link is a 404 so I can't investigate the context.

If anything these stories prove the opposite - sexual predators are going to be sexual predators, regardless of whether there's a law saying that trans people can't use a bathroom of their choice. Their actions are illegal regardless, and transgender protections don't have any impact on the ability to prosecute them - it was never "illegal" to be in the wrong bathroom before all this, that wasn't what predators were charged with.

Charlotte, Greensboro and Cary get punished, where there are less McCrory supporters (as a percentage) than the more rural regions. McCrory is running a campaign ad right now on boys not using girls bathrooms - he's completely dug in. (not /s)

I guess we're all just Deplorables down here. (/s)

I don't feel bad about males having to use the man's or a single stall family bathroom. People out there are crazy and if you don't think kids can be abducted by some lunatic in the bathroom, you need to get out from under your rock. And I think it more likely a man would abduct a girl from a bathroom than a woman would.

Also, if you're doing something that makes everyone around you uncomfortable, you're probably doing something you should reevaluate and come up with a different solution.

Complaining about political correctness = a particularly logical way of complaining about people who refuse to tolerate those who have right wing political views. I mean come on, most liberals do not even agree with the SJW era right now and what they're doing by just calling anyone who disagrees with them "racist" or "bigoted."

Racism and bigotry should not be tolerated. People who stand up against racism and bigotry should be applauded and supported, not labeled "SJWs" and ridiculed by people claiming to be the oppressed right wing. Ugh.

No matter what your feelings are on the underlying issues (no politics), it makes me sad to see these social divides seemingly becoming more pronounced.  I guess 319 million people is a lot different opinions on things.

I have a friend who is transgender, born male.  Danielle transitioned to female over a decade ago and is actually quite conventionally attractive, i.e., cleans up quite well in a dress and make-up.  If you saw her you would think "hey, that's a woman"  Danielle's preference is to use the woman's restroom.  Under the letter of the NC law, she is legally bound to use the men's restroom.

What restroom do you think Danielle should be using?

Not sure how that's not a valid question. If she hasn't then no. If she has then sure, that means she's clearly not some random pedophile pretending to be transphobic to peep on people, which is, you know, what the law is helping prevent.

It will be interesting to see if this becomes another example like the national anthem where the "no politics" rule doesn't apply here because a sizable portion of this group here agrees with it. Please let's just let this be a sports blog, no matter who you agree with...

This is a slippery slope, but if the NCAA wants to get into the outrage / boycott business, so be it.

Just don't cherry pick your targets of outrage, NCAA.  If you are going to be in the outrage business, you should cover the whole political spectrum.

I mean, if a Northeast state takes a bunch of guns away from some right-wing nut-job Preppers, you are going to boycott that state too, right?

What good is thte outrage game if everybody doesn't get to play?

The world has utterly and completely lost its mind and its common sense. Enjoy your mimosa, a good book, and the spectacular glacier viewing on the deck of the Titanic.

for a number of reasons. But the NCAA's actions seem very inappropriate for a non political organization. And when you consider the NCAA's own immoral exploitation and abuse of college athletes, it seems very hypocritical and self-righteous.
