Local Recruiting Help

Submitted by ypsituckyboy on

So I was talking to a high school kid tonight from Romulus High. Really good all around, respectful, and hard working. He plays MLB, is about 6'0", 215 lbs, and says he runs a 4.7/40 (honest kid). He had 16 tackles the other day.

He's being recruited pretty heavily by some Ivy League schools and maybe a few others, but would like to get a scholarship to Michigan or walk on. Judging by his recruiters, it doesn't seem like he's B10 material, but he is a huge Kovaks fan, so he's not afraid of earning a spot via grit. What's the best way to get the attention of the coaching staff at UM? Also, do you think any of them read this board?

From one non-insider to another: Please do not get involved in any way with a potential recruit, no matter how well-intentioned you are (and I'm sure you have the kid's best interest at heart). Have his high school coach contact the UM staff to express interest, send tapes, get walk-on info, etc.

I hope the coaches have better things to do then to read about our unrealistic expectations about our defense and why our recruits aren't higher ranked. Although everyone enjoys CRex's and Mathlete's posts.

No way I want to get involved at all. I've been watching football all my life, but I've never played and don't know anything about it from a coaching/recruiting standpoint. I just thought it'd be nice to toss him a few ideas.

Seriously doubt RichRod and the staff (other than maybe a Quality Control guy or grad assistant) look at any of the blogs. Maybe the QC guys keep current with rivals but I doubt it.

I agree that the best way is for the young man to attend a few camps; I know of a few people who have had success with this approach.

From what I understand, the athletic department has people who monitor blogs, recruiting sites, and such.  It only makes sense for the athletic programs to want to know what the public perception is about Michigan, its recruits, etc.

I don't know why you think he's being honest when he says he runs a 4.7 forty-yard dash.  If I remember correctly, Donovan Warren ran a 4.68 at the NFL Combine.  Do you honestly think this nondescript, Ivy League-caliber MLB from Romulus can run with Donovan Warren?

that makes his 4.7 40 in the north accurate.....   as tomvh states 40 time gets 4fakes out of 5....

Seriously Carlos Brown ran a 4.65 at a camp in georgia his sr yr and was the fastest player there by far according to his hs coach who used to post on scout forum...so the hs recruit 40 times I see being anywhere below 4.5, I never believe, ever.

Is he a senior? If so he should've gone to Michigan's football camp- that's the best place the coaches can see him. Otherwise, send a highlight film in and make sure he communicates with the coaches/RC's.

If he makes it into Michigan regardless.. there are open tryouts in the fall and spring he can come out for.

Fred Jackson told me (late in  the Carr era) and a group of alumni that the coaches are always interested in hearing about potential prospects.  They take the info and do whatever follow-up they find appropriate.  But that is how they often hear about kids.  I have sent him emails identifying 2 kids over the years, one from my son's high school, who ended up geting an offer but has committed to Cincinnati and another from my own old high school that is class of 2012 that I expect will get an offer (though I am sure they would have heard about this kid without me).  The first email I sent, he responded and thanked me for the info.  I have sent some follow up emails about the same kids, but he never responds, I assume that is because they are not allowed to talk about recruits (certainly not in an email that can get spread around the 'net).

If I were you I would send an email to one of the assistant coaches.  If you have no personal contact with any, you can probably determine who has recruiting responsibility for Romulus and send it to him.  You can find email addresses at either/or mgoblue.com and umich.edu.

There's an article from the Daily linked at Mgo.licio.us about 3 walkons from AA Pioneer. It includes this:

After Will’s senior football season, Noah Hurwitz, the guardian of one of Will’s teammates at Pioneer, Cameron Joplin (who now plays tight end for Northwestern), told Will he could play football in college and that he’d make him a highlight video. Will was doubtful, but Hurwitz persisted.

“He said, ‘You’re big, you’re fast, you could walk on — a lot of schools would love to have you.’ So he made a highlight tape and sent it to Wisconsin, Northwestern and Michigan.”

Will went to Schembechler Hall to drop his tape off — “The coolest thing I had ever done.” — and the director of football operations told him he’d hear back in a week.
