Congrats to Coach Carr! After the Notre Dame game, I truly thought I'd be in CA today, cheering for Michigan in the Rose Bowl. I would have seen Coach Carr's induction, too. Oh, what might have been!!

As the release linked by the OP mentions, Llyod was at the Rose Bowl nine times (I thought it was more though - isn't it more like 10 or 11 including time as an assistant?), including four times as the head coach of the Wolverines. There was actually an article the other day that talked a little about his induction speech and how Brian Griese actually was the person who introduced Carr at the ceremony.

Congratulations to Coach Carr - another honor for a very long and excellent Michigan career.

I used to get frustrated when we played "good" teams and Lloyd would lose some match-ups vs. higher ranked Michigan, but his record vs. Top 10 teams was amazing, even with some losses to Tressel factored in.

The 1997 season was incredible. I was at three nailbiter games that year (home wins vs. ND, Iowa, and Ohio).

Thanks Lloyd!

The record vs. top 10 teams is something of a misnomer since it only takes into account what teams were ranked there at at the time. For example, if Akron beat us this season, they would have beaten "the 11th-ranked Michigan Wolverines" when time would show we were not even in the top 50 this season.

Against teams that finished in the top 10, Carr was 11-14. You can certainly say that's still a good record all things considered but either way, that is the way I think a vs. Top 10 record should be measured.

Of course the teams we lost to would have a higher chance of ending up in the top 10, they'd have one fewer loss. And a win against Michigan, which helps in the rankings. And if we beat them, they would have a higher chance of falling out of the top ten. One more loss. Neither metric is perfect, but yours is essentially saying that Lloyd Carr is 11-14 against teams that played Michigan and had 0-2 losses.

A while back I compiled a list of coaches' records against top-ten, top-25, top-50 teams as measured by the Massey ranking at the end of the season. (Massey's better than polls because it covers more than the top 25, better than the other computers because the database is so easy to use.) First I did it for recent Michigan coaches--later, in a different context, I did Stoops and Mack Brown and Saban (just their primary, most recent, gigs, not their whole careers). The results:

vs. EOS  top ten:

  • Saban 9-9
  • Stoops 12-14
  • Carr 12-15
  • Moeller 4-8
  • Brown 7-20
  • Schembechler 5-19-1
  • Hoke 0-3
  • Rodriguez 0-6

vs. 11-25:

  • Saban 13-2
  • Schembechler 33-14
  • Brown 26-13
  • Moeller 6-3-1
  • Stoops 28-14
  • Carr 15-11
  • Rodriguez 1-4
  • Hoke 1-5

vs. 26-50:

  • Saban 17-2
  • Moeller 15-2-1
  • Stoops 41-7
  • Brown 40-8
  • Schembechler 53-12-4
  • Carr 36-11
  • Hoke 7-3
  • Rodriguez 3-5

He may have struggled a bit against the second tier but against that top group Lloyd's record stands up against the very, very best.

Congrats Coach Carr! It occurs to me, that if they had the 4 team playoff that starts next year, he probably would have had UM in it in 1997, 2003, and 2006. I'll take that any day of the week and twice on Sunday. Again, congrats to coach a class act and thanks for all he has done for UM.

Congrats to a fine gentleman and coach.  He always came across as classy and a great representative for the program.

We will always remember in 1997 after the Rose Bowl victory him telling the team that they "just won the national championship."

Congratulations to a great coach and a hell of a man. History will look back very fondly on Lloyd Carr, even if we Michigan fans didn't respect his achievements enough.

One would think the spartans would congratulate him. After all, it was he who blocked harbaugh as qb coach years ago, then it was he who blocked miles from coming, then who also allowed his players to sandbag RR. Oh, and allowed mike hart to unify sparty with the lil bro comment. Way to be a leader lloyd. For everyone else but michigan
