Little Brown Jug how I love thee!

Submitted by GWUWolverineFan on

Seeing as how few know the origins of the "Little Brown Jug" as the name for the trophy, it is oftentimes credited to having come from this popular drinking song from the late 1800's. (Composed in 1869 by Joseph Winner).

Would be awesome if the band played it at the game.. But I guess in the politically correct day and age.. And as it is almost happy hour time here in Ann Arbor, Cheers!

Me and my wife live all alone
In a little log hut we call our own;
She loves gin and I love rum,
And don't we have a lot of fun!
Chorus
Ha, ha, ha, you and me,
Little brown jug, don't I love thee!
Ha, ha, ha, you and me,
Little brown jug, don't I love thee!
When I go toiling on the farm
I take the little jug under my arm;
Place it under a shady tree,
Little brown jug, 'tis you and me.
(Chorus)
’Tis you that makes me friends and foes,
’Tis you that makes me wear old clothes;
But, seeing you're so near my nose,
Tip her up and down she goes.
(Chorus)
If all the folks in Adam's race
Were gathered together in one place,
I'd let them go without a tear
Before I'd part from you, my dear.
(Chorus)
If I'd a cow that gave such milk,
I'd dress her in the finest silk;
Feed her up on oats and hay,
And milk her twenty times a day.
(Chorus)
I bought a cow from Farmer Jones,
And she was nothing but skin and bones;
I fed her up as fine as silk,
She jumped the fence and strained her milk.
(Chorus)
And when I die don't bury me at all,
Just pickle my bones in alcohol;
Put a bottle o' booze at my head and feet
And then I know that I will keep.
(Chorus)
The rose is red, my nose is too,
The violet's blue and so are you;
And yet, I guess, before I stop,
We'd better take another drop.
(Chorus)

I can still remember 2005, like it was yesterday, Barber III and/or Maroney running around The Big House holding our Brown Jug above his head like it belonged to them.

Makes me puke in my mouth.

make the road trip for the '03 game.  After thinking we'd lost it, then actually watching our guys get to take it back home, my love for it grew exponentially.

It's like one of your teeth.  You don't necessarily find yourself thankful for them every single day.  But when one of those little bastards has a problem or wiggles itself loose, you can't ever stand the thought of being apart.

I heart you Brown Jug, every single day.

Was there in '03 as well and can remember being sick thinking we were not going home with the jug.  Then a funny thing happened, MN kept running out of bounds to stop the clock and I knew the jug was working it's magic.  The jug wanted to come back home and made sure it happened.

After UTL my dad and I have debated which game was a bigger come back: '03 vs MN or UTL.  I am just happy knowing I was able to witness both in person.  I love the jug and I go bananas for Michigan!

If I ever were to teach a college course on Michigan sports history, this question would be the midterm.  You can't go wrong with either side as there are great points for each.  Without '03 Minnesota, we don't go to the Rose Bowl.  From a historic sense though, the top 2 teams in NCAA history in the largest outdoor stadium in North America, in the first night. . . . well, you obviously get the point.

Hopefully, the pro UTL argument gets even stronger by the end of the season with assessment that without it, we don't have Jan 2nd/Rose Bowl/BCS bowl.
