Will Tressel try to cover it up?
Will Tressel try to cover it up?
If the lions were that committed to winning, they'd have hired a better coach.
I get people not liking Tressel, but would you all actually be mad if they hired him and he turned out to be a good coach who helped the offense succeed?
He's not going back to OSU or anything, and it's not like Michigan is facing off against the Lions. It'd be a good hire if it helps the Lions improve. I don't like Tressel, but I'm not going to have some weird melt down just because of his hiring. I'd be pissed if the Lions passed up good players just because they went to ND or OSU, and I'd be disappointed if they avoided hiring coaches they felt were good hires just because of they used to coach at ND or OSU.
Can't you see the mob has spoken and everyone is never going to support the Lions again. ( which is obviously utter bullshit)
People's responses to the coaching hunt and Caldwell's subsequent hiring has been ridiculous.
I'm pretty underwhelmed by it, but Jesus H Christ people, settle down. The guy has been on the staff literally for like a day.
He needs a tatoo of my shoeprint on his @#$!!!
Tressel is (still) worshipped as a god in Ohio. Why would he come to Michigan where everyone hates him?
Fuck Tressel. I'll never root for the lions again if he gets a job in the state of Mchigan.
The vast majority of Lions fans wouldn't give a shit about his past history or his Buckeye affiliations.
This is the truth. Winning cures all.
The Lions are in the same MgoNegativeEchoChamber that the football team was in most of 2013.
The bigger problem, like junior6791 said, is Tressel seems like a questionable fit for the Lions' offense.
I don't like the lions as much as Michigan. If that happened I would believe 100% that Tressel has ties to Satan.
well, Lewand did offer to take the mark of the beast.
Good. Now I can actively root against the Lions and feel joy on Sundays instead of disappointment.
PLus 1 for makking me think of Lord Grantham having a huge flat screen in his library and watching the NFL on it.
and I highly recommend it. Watching the Lions fail enhances my appreciation of sports as an endeavor where success is based on merit.
Man, poor choice of words by Lewan. That may come back to haunt him at some point. Who knows if that, or any hire will make a difference. At the end of the day, its still the Lions we are talking about.
I'm not a Lions fan, but I do typically root for them casually in their division. If they make this hire I will immediately side with all of my friends that are Bears fans.
acknowledging that they are willing to hire a guy who lied to his fanbase, school and the school's regents, president and the governing authority which oversaw its football program for more than a year even after they all went out on a limb for him and gave him their uncompromising trust about his leadership. They will be hiring someone who disregarded all the standards and alleged values of his school and program in order to win without consequence.
He openly acknowledged in direct testimony that he knew about using illegal players who had committed NCAA violations for months prior to the start of the 2010 season that ended in an Ohio State Sugar Bowl win, and told no one and didn't confront his own players about it. Yet, when he was caught and federal authorities sent a letter to Ohio, acknowledging player connections to a known felon trafficking in Buckeye merchandise and memorabilia, whom an estimated 22 Buckeye players were eventually linked, the fact that the Senator deflected knowledge of their activities no longer could stand as an Emperor with no clothes explanation.
Of course, in the aftermath of this Fine Line mess in tattoogate, Tressel got hit with a five-year NCAA show cause hiring ban (still in effect) and had to settle for a subsequent $200K special promotions and student development job at Youngstown State created just for him. This was after the Indianapolis Colts, Jim Caldwell's former employer, sought to immediately hire him as a consultant for the 2011 season. Now, Caldwell wants him on his staff as OC.
I never thought he was an offensive-minded coach. And having developed an NC team that won without much offense and stout defense led by now MSU head coach, Mark Dantonio, while his teams consistently beat Michigan with Brady Hoke briefly on staff, suggests Caldwell has little sensibility to the Michigan football experience, which Lewand now mocks. I only say no sensibility becuase its a mostly a fanbase thing, not a hiring thing. He can hire whomever he wants and who he thinks will make his team successful.
But he should understand that if he does so, that Caldwell is already starting from a risk-taker position with certain fans of this club. Not like the Lions nor Lewand should get any beneft of the doubt when it comes to hiring winning coaches. This franchise is a historical loser in the Super Bowl race, having never qualified for the game. So, why should anyone care anyway. Chances are, Caldwell is digging his own grave trusting a man to be his OC who lacks real credibility in the real world, but is a pure coaching genius worthy of total forgiveness and a fresh start with the Lions.
Tattoo that on your forehead, Lewand.
The NFL is a business: not sure this is a good business decision though.
I'm not a Lions fan so I have no horse in this race, but if Tressel is able to win you football games, I'd find a way to get over it. I get it. Everyone here hates Tressel. I hate him too. But winning cures all. And you Lions fans out there, of all people, should be starved for a winning team by now. So much so that you almost shouldn't give two shits who is at the helm of your team, as long as they can win.
is wrong. Tressel coached and served as AD at Youngstown State before getting his job at Ohio State. He landed his "second chance" customized job at the University of Akron, working in "strategic engagement." In so doing, Tressel took a $3 million pay cut.
But, of course, when he returned to Ohio State for the Michigan game in 2012 and was introduced at halftime, the man whom the school claimed paid a "terrible price" for his mistakes was rewarded with a hero's welcome by Buckeye fans who gave him a standing ovation.
And if the Lions win a Super Bowl with the Senator legislating its offense, then may be Lions fans will also forgive and forget his days regularly beating Michigan and operating as a rogue cheater. To many Lions fans, those aren't necessarily bad things.
Maybe he should get an "L" tattooed on his forehead. For, uh, "Lions." Yeah, "Lions" - that's the ticket!
If you're abandoning the Lions over this, you were never a Lions fan in the first place... you were a Michigan fan who cheered for the Lions sometimes. You won't be missed. 99% of the team's fanbase will not give two shits. Bye.
If it takes Tressel to do it, so be it. I didn't like the guy when he was playing against us either. Why? Because that sweater vest just was a symbol for defeat. LET NOW THE SWEATERVEST BE THE SYMBOL OF VICTORY.
Sarcasm, but seriously, get over it or don't watch the Lions, nobody is forcing you to be a fan.
Edit: And the groupthink strikes again, downvoted 5 times because individuals have this massive hatred for Tressel. I just envision an "Ace Ventura Lace's Out, Dan!!!" mural that must be impressive at these people's residents who freely neg because they don't share the same opinion. Lol Unbelievable.
I completely disagree with your point on Tressel, but I won't neg you for having a terrible opinion and lack of hate for a sweater vest.
And i respect your opinion good sir. I'm not asking anyone to like Tressel. Nothing excites me about how he threw all these violations under a blanket with the all cost mentality of beating Michigan and it worked. He beat a very successful highly favorited Miami team to win a NC in 2002. Worked too well because the violations Ohio St. got in the aftermath were hardly enough to account for the successes that brought his team. However, I am able to seperate the animosity from the collegiate to the pro level. I will freely eat my words if this turns into a blundered mess but eh, its the Lions, you can't go worse than 0-16 unless they add more games to the NFL schedule fortunately.
SOMEBODY TAKE LO$EWAND'S MICHIGAN MAN CARD FROM HIM RIGHT NOW
in Michigan if there was one organization that won the ultimate championship in any sport, the one team above all others would be celebrated with the greatest sense of pride and joy, it would be the Detroit Lions because of the deep-seated loyalty and strength of its fanbase.
And I think Bo was right. And to a certain extent we know this, only because every major team in the state has won a major championship or had its day in recent years except one -- the Lions.
So, I know it won't matter who is on staff and how things play out, if the team wins and eventually secures a Super Bowl championship. That day will be the greatest sports day in the state of Michigan, ever.
Bo said this when he was president of the Tigers, and so he was talking from an understanding that went beyond the state's love of its college programs. But until that day comes when the Lions finally get over the Super Bowl hump, they are fanbase targets for the perception of every dumb azz move that could underline failure in reaching that goal.
So, the question is, why go there with Tressel who isn't even an acknoweldged offensive mind based on any football assessment regardless of whether you think conservative play-calling will better suit a team with more offensive talent than most NFL clubs? I mean forget the coaching relationship and connections beteween Caldwell and Tressel, but why is this guy your first OC choice for the Lions, who don't play anything close to Tresselball and who if they did, would bore the crap out of their fans?
Tressel as OC is pure speculation.
It could be a win-win though. If they win, great. If they lose and have a shit offense, we get to run him out of town!
It's a free tattoo.
another DUI so he gets fired? That might help the Lions win.
Spartan fan will be like, ok it worked for us. Wolverine fan, Go Packers!
All kidding aside, if they win will it really matter? Think of it as when Chelios joined the Wings.
It's on the Internet. It has to be true.
They root for laundry. The only thing that consistently generates money, goodwill, attendance, interest ... is winning.
This is the attitude you want your front office to have.
That said, I think that he'll be exposed in the NFL having never run an offense against defenses whose worst starters were the best players in college. In college you both bring in talent and scheme around it; the NFL requires coaches to scheme only (barring GM/coaches).
on his forehead is what it will take to win?
...he was a manager for the football team. This is just gross.
if he sucks, win (ha ha Tressel).
if he's good, win (yeah Lions).
not sure why everyone is over-reacting -- it's not like he was the devil.
This comment isn't going to go over well with the people in Michigan.
I could possibly hate the Lions any more than I do already--but now I actually do! I cannot wait for another epic failure by them, the worse franchise in pro sports HISTORY.
