landing spot. will be interesting to see how he does.
Go Lions! What a franchise. At least the rest of the Lions fan can now abandon ship. Most already root for another team already.
If he is hired I'm out. I'm not happy with Caldwell hire but this is a totally different animal. Any chance Sandusky can call defensive plays from prison?
You cheered for Spielman, didn't you?
If by chhered for him you mean hoped he would suffer a serious injury then yes !
Boy, this thread turned into a dick-measuring, I-can-hate-Ohio-more-than-you-can thread real fast.
90% of the internet is porn. 5% is cat and dog videos. 4% is videos of idiots sustaining compound fractures of the tibia attempting parkour or crushing their testicles on handrails while skateboarding. The remaining 1% is dick-measuring in the fields of sports and politics.
I forgot to account for dick-measuring porn.
I think your total should add up to >100% to account for all of the cat porn.
That is a sig worthy quote right there.
90% porn seems awfully low.
nobody post "pic or it didn't happen" to this dick measuring idea.
This makes it very complicated for me. I have an enormous penis but I don't hate Ohio quite as much as others do.
And another thing, if it's true that Spielman wanted to go to Michigan and his dad said no, then what does that say about him ? I say it shows Spielman wasn't mentally strong enough to tell his dad " I respect your opnion but this is my life". It's one thing to consider a parents opinion but to let them choose a college for you lacks maturity and strength.
You should always respect your father's opnion. Other's opnions, not so much.
Yeah, if there's one thing you're a fount of wisdom about, it's maturity.
Pull your head out of your ass dude. You're just offensive and probably 13.
So M-Wolverine/David from Wyoming/Chitownblue all get banned, but shit stains like you are allowed to stick around?
can tell you never played the game with the respect it deserves
I don't usually condone personal attacks, but you're an asshole.
Can someone just instantly ban people that comment things like that? (5starrecruit) It makes us all look like Mlive or RCMB
Hmmm... it's just my opnion, but I think I smell a negbang and/or a trip to La Paz.
He'll have another account up that same day and rack up 500 points his first week. I've noticed lots of new accounts made in the last few weeks with more points accumulated in two weeks than I have in however long I've been a "valued" member. Perhaps I should start commenting on everything that's posted, regardless of whether or not I have anything to say.
Worthless dumbasses like you make me want to burn my diploma
I'd bet he's never set foot inside a UM classroom, so your diploma is safe.
He's a Lion LEGEND!!! GTFO
Hope you're kidding and totally disagree. I was a Lions season ticket holder when he played. (I was in college at the time too, so it made for fantastic football weekends. Wheatley on Saturday, Barry and Spielman on Sunday).
Spielman is one of my favorite football players ever. He's an example of how I think all football players should be. I love UM and hope they kick OSU in the teeth any time, but that doesn't extend to hoping their players get hurt.
Spielman is a class guy. He was a great player with the Lions. He was always polite and kind to the fans when I went to the fall camps. And the way he treated his wife when she was sick was, IMHO, a great example. He's a great player and an honorable man. He isn't a Michigan fan. I can get over that.
This is a slightly different situation, you know?
I don't see how it is, other than M beat Spielman's Buckeyes teams more than they beat Tressel's.
I guess I don't get as worked up about NCAA violations when I'm cheering for my NFL team as the rest of you.
You are lion-ized
Tressel is a cheater and a liar and sold kids out for his own gain.
Comparing that to Spielman and thinking you are right shows how lion-ized you are.
Becoming Lions free was the best thing that ever happened to me, especially now that this may be true. What a pathetic organization.
I guess I put more value on character than you do.
But the NFL Is second to only the NBA in the last place competition for places to look for character.
Character is a broad term, and I think there's still enough to be found in the NFL coaching ranks.
Do you? I hope you never wanted Michigan to hire big time asshole Jim Harbaugh, then. And I sure as shit hope you're asking all kinds of questions in the Jim Caldwell and Teryl Austin threads about what they knew in regards to Jerry Sandusky.
or is it just another selective "lolololololololol people from ohio aren't people lolololol look how much value I place in a meaningless football rivalry"
What in my posting history suggests that I'm inclined to any sort of "lolololololololol people from ohio aren't people lolololol look how much value I place in a meaningless football rivalry"
I'll wait for an answer on that one. As to the rest:
And I sure as shit hope you're asking all kinds of questions in the Jim Caldwell and Teryl Austin threads about what they knew in regards to Jerry Sandusky.
Why? I haven't said a single word about the Caldwell hire, good or bad. I'm not really an NFL fan in general. I watch the Lions about half of the time, and that's it. I commented on the potential Tressel hire, because it crossed the "line" of knowledge that I do have, and honestly, touched a nerve. He's a proven liar and cheater. Fin.
Do you? I hope you never wanted Michigan to hire big time asshole Jim Harbaugh, then.
Why? Because he's an asshole? I can deal with an asshole. He's an asshole with integrity, and is generally regarded as an honest guy. He may lack grace, so what? I would have been very happy with Harbaugh.
Who pissed in your cornflakes this morning? Don't take it out on me, there are plenty of legitimate mouth breathing idiots to lash out at. Bye.
meaningless football rivalry..really?
you realize that these games are essentially value free, correct? The results have no tangible effect on the world at large?
have an effect on my quality of life, even if only for a few days. But the affect is there and I don't consider them meaningless, obviously you do. I doubt i'm alone in that, but if I am I still disagree with you. To each their own I guess.
it's really not an opinion thing
no matter how much value you or I personally place in these games, there is no deeper meaning or effect. They're a form of entertainment and that entertainment may or may not enrich our lives in some way, but they contribute nothing to society otherwise. Nobody who isn't affiliated with either side really cares and very few people outside the United States are even aware that this is a thing.
Hard to dislike Chris Spielman. Yes, he played for Ohio, but he's a good human being and it's difficult not to feel compassion for him.
different animals. one is a player who went to a school to give himself a good opportunity to succeed and had a good career doing his job. the other is a malevolent schmuck who made it his life's work to undermine the greatest thing in the world and did so by cheating to create an unearned competitive advantage. apples to oranges, bro.
Totally different situation. Spielman played hard, has never seemed to carry much of a grudge(almost signed with Michigan until his dad told him that wasn't an option), and there's never been a slimy aura around him You can combine that with Spielman played for Ohio when the rivalry was more or less even. Tressel locked down Ohio while playing the "I didn't see it" card in regards to players getting additional benefits and for better or worse is the face of Ohio's recent dominance of the rivalry.
It's pretty easy to see why Michigan fans would check out of the Lions if Tressel got hired, being a sports fan is primarily an empotional experience and Tressel inspires very bad ones. There's also the fact that drafting a player on the basis of his talents will be hard to replicate from another source is a VERY different thing from hiring a position coach who most fans think are mostly interchangeable. The value proposition of drafting and re-signing Spielman was clear, not so much with Tressel and it therefore becomes very easy to interpret the hiring of Tressel as a "Screw you" to a significant portion of the Lions fan base and does illustrate a problem with the organization to some extent.
Hah! We wrote the same stuff at about the same time. Zany internets.
CLord your avatar is brilliant.
C'man, big diff.
Spielman was/is a good dude who never cheated and just played hard. Easy guy to root for as a player with the Lions. Less so now as an announcer, but still a decent chap.
Tressel? Never, ever. Park him in the 9th circle of Hell next to WIll Gholston and David Boston. He cheated and lied, and the images of the standing ovation he received at the Shoe a year later is a memory I'll never forget, and will probably always most clearly illustrate the difference in character between Michigan's fan base and Ohio's.
If he's some ancillary advisor in the shadows I'll continue to root for my beloved Lions but if he gets any prominent role or - shudder - becomes OC, then GO RAMS!!!!
Spielman was a great player from an era when the rivalry was still even or in Michigan's favor. HIs contributions to the Lions were easy to see and easy to admire.
Tressel was a lying cheating scumbag who owned Michigan on the field. All we will see is his stupid mug on the sideline each week and be reminded of a crappy period in the UM/OSU rivalry.
Its not that hard to figure out why someone might want to be a fan of one and not the other.
No I didn't actually. I was in kindergarten when he was playing his last season in Detroit. And I was happy robiskie was done after only a few games.
Spielman was an Ohio kid who went to OSU and played hard for his school.
The Vest broke every rule in the book, paid players, and now pretends his a Saint for retiring with a pension.
He always pretended he was a saint. That didn't happen after he left.
Please consider my post to be so amended.
I don't believe that actually happened?
I have no idea what your comment means.
Spielman was an incredibly hard-working player who gave his all in every game. There was no reason NOT to cheer for him.
Tressel is a disgraced slimeball cheating asshole.
Spielman was a great player, leader and person of character. Tressel is total fing slime. I don't say this lightly but if I saw lewand right now in would knock him on his fing ass. God the Lions just suck.
Yeah lets totally compare a college coach who let some of his players get paid to a child rapist, that is totally reasonable. The man is a fricking college football coach, he got paid a lot of money to kick michigans ass every year and he did it. I don't like him but if he is a good coach and can help the lions then it was a good decision. I hate the school, doesn't mean everyone ever associated with it I have to hate for the rest of their lives.
But seriously more importantly you should never make that comparison to sandusky, its pathetic and disgusting.
I'll just chip in to agree with this. Dislike Tressel for lying, winning, and being pompous about it all you want. I'm not too worked up about it myself, but understand why others are. Trying to equate that with raping children for rhetorical effect, however, is really freaking distasteful.
Actually wasn't really comparing the things tressel and Sandusky did, at all. The only point I was making and was clearly missed is that the news has just been getting progressively worse ( didn't want Caldwell, can't stand tressel and will enjoy rooting against him, and then well of course Sandusky would just be the cherry on top of the icing). I'm just looking for more reasons to hate the lions and Sandusky clearly would do it.
Old JT knows a guy who knows a guy that can get Lewand a "good" deal on a tat.
a 1957 NFL Championship jersey?
if he goes to Columbus.
Can't believe Lewan brought up tattoos when he was talking about Tressel. Just shows how clueless the Lions are.
I suspect he brought up tattoos on purpose. His statement is actually quite clever. He justifies the potential hire of Tressel while getting a dig in on Ohio at the same time.
I saw it the exact same way. It was a clever dig at ohio state while still pledging his commitment to do whatever it takes to help his team.
but is it really a smart thing to do when you have to delay the announcement until the league approves him because of the issue you are joking about?
are waiting for the front office to approve it. I take that to mean the Lions front office. I don't have any problem with the hire if it goes through. Tressel's a good coach and while I'd be worried about him getting a similar job in college (certainly wouldn't want someone with that track record at Michigan) his transgressions aren't an issue in the NFL, at least IMO. Rooting for a team sometimes means having to overcome my personal dislike or disapproval for the actions of people associated with the team. It would be hard to maintain fandom for any team, Michigan sports included, if I was required to like/approve of everything that the players and coaches associated with those teams do.
I hadn't considered that. That's pretty funny stuff.
Too bad tattooing a buckeye on his head might be just as effective at helping the lions win as any of the other staff decisions made since the season ended.
I think tattooing a target up there would probably be the best way to help the franchise.
I'd rather all of my teams go winless for the remainder of time than tattoo anything affiliated with that shit-stain of a university down there anywhere on my body.
I couldn't have said it better myself.
I would support you getting a tattoo of a buckeye anywhere on your body, if it would help Michigan become dominant again. ;) See what I did there. I did not say I would support me getting a tatoo, but you.
Damn you Schwartz, why couldn't you have made the playoffs this year!
I think it would be a great hire...let's be honest
For offense? Defensively sure but they got somebody else for DC.
Tressel is not and never was a defensive coach
while Jones is a meddling ego maniac at least he has a history of wanting to win and actually doing so. Something I can't say about the Fords.
How, in any way, shape, or form, can Jerry Jones possibly be worse than the Fords?
This is all I heard:
I'm a Browns and Michigan fan. I would love to have Tressel as a coach on the Browns. As much as I hated him at Ohio, he was a fantastic coach there. I think he could do well in the NFL.
I don't know. He recruted like a champ at OSU and they had better talent than anyone in the B1G. Urban only has 2 losses in 2 years.
I don't see him as an offensive innovator and think he will fail in the NFL and Lions fans will be looking for a new coach in 2 years. I'm not a huge fan of the NFL, but now I have a team to constantly root against, so that's a plus.
Why don't NFL teams take a run at Urban Meyer anyway? He'd be head and shoulders above Caldwell/ Tressel.
Urban has had two of the easiest schedules out of all BCS teams during his tenure at Ohio, so winning all of those games is no surprise. I also don't think he will ever leave the NCAA for the NFL. Some guys are college coaches for life and I just have a feeling he is one of them.
I feel really bad for Browns fans. Now their organization has fired Chud to make way for........nobody
His successor was a Buckeye player: Bo and Mo.
Knock it off with your rational thoughts. Serious question: They called it Tressel Ball for a reason. Isn't he a bit on the conservative side? I understand he's a "great" coach* but as far as offensive philosopy I wonder if this is a good fit?
*Except for the lying and stuff
Good question. All sore-asses aside, I think Tressel is smart enough to utilize his weapons. I can't imagine he'd come in and try to run Reggie Bush between the tackles and establish a 3 yeards and a cloud of dust type offense.
As far as the Lions possibly hiring Tressel, I don't care. If he helps them win, fine. If they don't hire him, hire someone else who will help the team win.
To paraphrase Al Davis: Just. Fucking. Win. Baby.
Bo and Mo weren't cheaters who CHEATED UM potentially out of B1G titles, and a possible national title. Period.
He didn't cheat UM of anything. He beat Michigan because Michigan was not good enough. Period.
It's impossible to tell.
Not to beat a dead horse, but it's known that he knew what was going on with that tattoo shop.
The question is did players go to OSU because of the added benefit of free tattoos? If they did, OSU fielded a team that, potentially, had more talent than they otherwise would have. Now, would OSU have beaten Michigan without the additional talent? Never know.
No player went to Ohio State to get free tattoos.
I bet you shed a tear when they showed his former players carrying him off the field a year after all his lies and cheating came to lite.
Good for you, keep loving you some garbage.
This is hilarious. You can't really take the Lions seriously, can you? I may even buy a ticket package now. It'll be fun now whether they win or lose!
That's too big of a price to win, I'm sorry.
Michigan Alum, but not a Michigan Man.
Common now Space that's simply not so. Done right a face tattoo can be quite nice and would send just the right corporate message from the Lions to their fans we have made a committment to winning!
but you are incorrect. Every single face tattoo is gross and disgusting. I present to you google images (yuck!)
So, in some other bizarre world where, say, this was Lane Kiffin that Tom Lewand was discussing, would he be averse to tattooing a Trojan on his head? I guess I would like to know how far he is willing to go to help the Lions compete consistently in the NFL.
What is interesting to me is that this seems to coincide with the retirement of the President at the University Of Akron and apparently this makes Tressel's future there a little murky. If not to the Lions, it would be interesting to see where a return to coaching might take him.
Just No. Still holding out hope that it's Christiansen the QB coach from Indy who helped turn Andrew Luck and the Colts offense into a competent bunch. Please no Sweater Vest.
I can learn to accept Tressel if the team ends up succeeding. He has the character that will fit with the Lions.
Just win. Winning cures all. If Tressel helps this team win games, I love the hire. If he loses games, I'll feel the same towards him as I do now -meh.
Winning does not cure Ohio-State-forehead tattoos. Only tattoo laser removal can do that. And I'm sure that would not look well after it's gone either. So...
Hey, if he wants one, be my guest. I'm talking more from the fans perspective
I've skimmed all these threads on the Lions coaching changes and have been perplexed. Tons of backlash against Caldwell, but most of those folks also disliked the other names being thrown around. So it seems like it was a no-win situation for many fans. Now, a lot of people assume Tressel will suck, too. My recollection of his offenses (in the football sense of the word) at OSU lead me to believe that this might work. I can't think of a high-level coach who varied his offense more during his tenure in order to tailor it to his team's strengths. The difference from the Krenzel-led, punt them into oblivion and get the ball into field goal range offense to the Troy Smith passing spread to the Pryor running spread is astonishing.
I think the Lions need to better use the talent they have, they need organization and they need discipline. I think Caldwell and Tressel might be able to provide that. I could be wrong, but I certainly haven't seen other realistic options out there that cause me to believe the Lions have totally bungled this up.
for his transgressions. He will know pain, sorrow, and losing like no other time in his life.
Looks like Tressel still has his free tattoo connections - next thing you know Lewand is going to be driving around in a Nissan Z.
I can see Lewand fielding a "What if the offense does not improve next year" question and him responding, "Well, I hope Coach Tressel doesn't fire me....."
is 9-7 seasons with an occasional 10-6 each decade.
On Suh's off the field issues: "This is the first I've heard of it"
On the lack of discipline on D: "I will look into this right away, happy Easter !!"
Heck, he may even make sure every player gets free tattoos of buckeyes on every appendage!
The Lions won't win with Caldwell so at this point he would just getting that tattoo for the sake of getting a face tattoo.
Blech. Lions. Dammit. Just do something good once this offeseason please. The way this offseason is going, we'll forget to send our pick in time and lose our first few choices.
EDIT: Also love how Lewand's default pic when googling him is his DUI mugshot...
Just wanted to let you guys know that with the hiring of Caldwell, I feel that the Lions are giving up completely. And keeping in accordance with that thought process I've put my self up as a free agent with NFL loyalties for sale on EBAY.
Check out my listing: http://www.ebay.com/itm/251426383286?ssPageName=STRK:MESELX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1555.l2649
...but I see a report on FoxSports that the Lions wanted Dungy first before Caldwell. I'm sure it was mentioned in other threads, but its a nice change of pace to get a report from a source other than ESPiN
-JT has learned not to use work computers when covering up lies so no "spygate" for Detroit.
-When FA come to town JT will rig it so they "win" the Raffle and hence want to become Lions.
- For front office people. When JT says "I'll get right on it!!". You might want to check up on that.
-Hecan bring his best selling fictional for the bathrooms in Allen Park.
JT forgot the apostrophe in "Winner's."
Do we forget that Jim Tressel owned our asses for nine years and took his team to the NCG three times? He's a good coach. And in the NFL, nobody cares if a player barters his own belongings for free stuff.
But we didn't forget that he hasn't been an OC in the NFL, or coached for 3 years, or is generally hated by both Michigan and MSU fans in Michigan, or that his year of NFL experience involved our current head coach going 2-14, or had the deck mostly stacked in his favor by recruiting Ohio kids to Ohio State by letting them do whatever they want while the Lions have had discipline problems...
We aren't cynics, it's just the fact that the Lions keep doing dumb thing after dumb thing.
And that is precisely why I am NOT a Lions fan and have been Lions free for 5 years. This organization is a joke, and will continue to be a joke as long as incompetent ownership and fools in the front office run it.
1. This will piss off Browns' fans. Their team doesn't have a head coach yet, and there was some kinda underground swell to get Tressel in Cleveland -- in SOME capacity, anyway. Say what you want about Lions' management and the Caldwell hire, but the Lions' front office looks completely competent and confident when compared to Cleveland's.
2. Tressel will have to wear gear that says "Detroit" on it -- and he'll be coaching a team from Michigan -- so, he'll finally have to give a damn about at least SOME of the state of Michigan.
If the Lions won the Super Bowl (work with me here) with Tressel on the staff I'm pretty sure most of the anti-Tressel hire people would be wearing the crap out of Lions gear.
If Tressel can help the Lions then great. It's a pro football team, not a beacon of morality. There are players that have done much worse than Tressel yet people still buy their jerseys and cheer the teams they play for. He didn't cheat on his wife, beat her, stab people or get multiple DUI's. He was the coach at Ohio State and some people actually believe that is worse than any crime mentioned. To those people I feel pity for because their own moral standards are beyond repair.
I frankly could care less about morality in sports. I don't watch sports for morality, I watch to see my teams win. Go to church if you want morals and stop looking for pro athletes and 18-22 year old kids to raise your kids.
Oh, the moralizing is just an excuse. It's just the same whiny "MICHIGAN FOOTBALL IS MORE IMPORTANT THAN THE AIR I BREATHE" crowd who say they'd cheer for Brady to win another Super Bowl even if it were against the Lions looking for an excuse to show how MICH they really are. If the Lions were hiring Butch Jones, you wouldn't even see a thread on it.
Michigan and Michigan State will always be bigger than the Lions in Michigan. It's just the way it is.
Maybe that's how it is for a portion of the people reacting poorly to this, but not everyone. The whole "win at all costs" mantra of today is pretty sickening in my mind, and just shows where we really are as a society in general. It makes me sad, and has ZERO to do with Michigan Football, Brodie. You paint with too broad a brush, man.
I've been a Lions fan my whole life, but I might shift my allegiance to my #2 team (the Patriots) if this happens. For whatever reason, I became a fan of them when they drafted Drew Bledsoe, so drafting Tom Brady was just the icing on the cake for them.
When it comes to the Lions and tattoos and some sort of motivation for winning, I think only one needs to be shown. Hopefully this is all the fire that need be lit under their collective asses.
the group think on this site is painful. Give Caldwell a chance, he helped Peyton.
I also don't care about college Tressell vs. NFL Tressell. If he can help my team, I don't care.
Amen brother. Everyone hates this hire, but yet if he can help my football team, the Detroit Lions, win games I'll be content. I don't care if this coaching staff was Dantonio, Narduzzi, Rich rod and Tressel, win games and I'll be happy.
If people don't think free tattoos happen at every college campus, they are kidding themselves.
I guess I can't wear my Lions sweater vest any more.
Matt Millen may be their second choice.
I think it's a great idea! Hire the Bollrus as our coordinator! Dump Stafford and bring in Pryor! Then we'll go 0-16 again and waste a GREAT draft pick!
Was the OSU tattoo on the forehead a dig on Tat-gate? I'd like to say that I have no problem iwth it as long as the Lions win, but it still has a large ew factor.
The Lions are dead to me.
Lions, you've done some stupid shit before, but this? Way to alienate a moderate chunk of your fanbase.
The portion of the Lions fanbase who care far more about Michigan football than the Lions is probably not that large and/or dedicated to the team to make an impact on their decision making. Fact is, most fans of both Michigan and the Lions are casual and don't care who coaches what as long as both teams win.
Eff you Tom Lewand. You have been my second least favorite Michigan Alumn (behind David Brandon) for a long time and now you solidified your spot in the Worst Michigan Alum Hall of Fame. You don't have to say that Tom. Ugh.
There are just some coaches who should be off limits to the Lions based on the dual support of Michigan and the Lions by many fans. I'd pass. Don't think Tressel is the missing piece of the puzzle that completes zither Lions playoff-winning picture anyway.
Do people forget he was signing letters to volleyball recruits for Akron just a shirt time ago?
Ah, Tressel. Yes! That's your answer! That's your answer to everything!
Tattoo it on your forehead!
Your revolution is over Mr. Lewand! Condolences! The Lions lost! My advice is, do what Jaguars fans did--give up, sir!
The Lions will always lose! Do you hear me Lewand! THE LIONS WILL ALWAYS LOSE!
I'd rather they hire Al Borges, there I said it.
Would be a 1,000,000x better hire even with all the Borges that Borges would bring
but I am looking forward to hearing Lewand saying this in a couple of years:
“No, are you kidding? Let me just be very clear. I’m just hopeful coach Tressel doesn’t dismiss me.”
I have had limited rooting interested in any pro team, choosing mostly to root for Michigan players regarless of team. However, I chose the Lions as my defacto NFL team because of of my years in Michigan (and my dumb belief that if the Lions do well, more kids in Michigan will play football, which will help Michigan in recruiting... yes, I am dumb like that).
However, if they hire Tressle I am 100% done with the Lions, I'd see it as a slap in the face. I mean, if he was some phenomenal OC worth offending 3/4 of your fan base ok, but come on.
We all hate the sweater vest but if he was good at his job, I'd have no problem with it. When he was HC for OSU, their defense was superior and won them games. His offense was always mediocre at best. He is a run, run, short pass kind of guy. That doesn't really work in the NFL unless you're San Fran, Seattle, Baltimore. Detroit is not that type of offense and its personnel don't fit that offense. If he's hired and tries that, expect doom.
Get the tattoo, that is. An Ohio State tat could very well be the mark of the beast, and you'll be hounded by Jack Van Impe, Hal Lindsey and others who may peg you as the Antichrist.
Will Tressel try to cover it up?
If the lions were that committed to winning, they'd have hired a better coach.
I get people not liking Tressel, but would you all actually be mad if they hired him and he turned out to be a good coach who helped the offense succeed?
He's not going back to OSU or anything, and it's not like Michigan is facing off against the Lions. It'd be a good hire if it helps the Lions improve. I don't like Tressel, but I'm not going to have some weird melt down just because of his hiring. I'd be pissed if the Lions passed up good players just because they went to ND or OSU, and I'd be disappointed if they avoided hiring coaches they felt were good hires just because of they used to coach at ND or OSU.
Can't you see the mob has spoken and everyone is never going to support the Lions again. ( which is obviously utter bullshit)
People's responses to the coaching hunt and Caldwell's subsequent hiring has been ridiculous.
I'm pretty underwhelmed by it, but Jesus H Christ people, settle down. The guy has been on the staff literally for like a day.
He needs a tatoo of my shoeprint on his @#$!!!
Tressel is (still) worshipped as a god in Ohio. Why would he come to Michigan where everyone hates him?
Fuck Tressel. I'll never root for the lions again if he gets a job in the state of Mchigan.
The vast majority of Lions fans wouldn't give a shit about his past history or his Buckeye affiliations.
This is the truth. Winning cures all.
The Lions are in the same MgoNegativeEchoChamber that the football team was in most of 2013.
The bigger problem, like junior6791 said, is Tressel seems like a questionable fit for the Lions' offense.
I don't like the lions as much as Michigan. If that happened I would believe 100% that Tressel has ties to Satan.
well, Lewand did offer to take the mark of the beast.
Good. Now I can actively root against the Lions and feel joy on Sundays instead of disappointment.
PLus 1 for makking me think of Lord Grantham having a huge flat screen in his library and watching the NFL on it.
and I highly recommend it. Watching the Lions fail enhances my appreciation of sports as an endeavor where success is based on merit.
Man, poor choice of words by Lewan. That may come back to haunt him at some point. Who knows if that, or any hire will make a difference. At the end of the day, its still the Lions we are talking about.
I'm not a Lions fan, but I do typically root for them casually in their division. If they make this hire I will immediately side with all of my friends that are Bears fans.
acknowledging that they are willing to hire a guy who lied to his fanbase, school and the school's regents, president and the governing authority which oversaw its football program for more than a year even after they all went out on a limb for him and gave him their uncompromising trust about his leadership. They will be hiring someone who disregarded all the standards and alleged values of his school and program in order to win without consequence.
He openly acknowledged in direct testimony that he knew about using illegal players who had committed NCAA violations for months prior to the start of the 2010 season that ended in an Ohio State Sugar Bowl win, and told no one and didn't confront his own players about it. Yet, when he was caught and federal authorities sent a letter to Ohio, acknowledging player connections to a known felon trafficking in Buckeye merchandise and memorabilia, whom an estimated 22 Buckeye players were eventually linked, the fact that the Senator deflected knowledge of their activities no longer could stand as an Emperor with no clothes explanation.
Of course, in the aftermath of this Fine Line mess in tattoogate, Tressel got hit with a five-year NCAA show cause hiring ban (still in effect) and had to settle for a subsequent $200K special promotions and student development job at Youngstown State created just for him. This was after the Indianapolis Colts, Jim Caldwell's former employer, sought to immediately hire him as a consultant for the 2011 season. Now, Caldwell wants him on his staff as OC.
I never thought he was an offensive-minded coach. And having developed an NC team that won without much offense and stout defense led by now MSU head coach, Mark Dantonio, while his teams consistently beat Michigan with Brady Hoke briefly on staff, suggests Caldwell has little sensibility to the Michigan football experience, which Lewand now mocks. I only say no sensibility becuase its a mostly a fanbase thing, not a hiring thing. He can hire whomever he wants and who he thinks will make his team successful.
But he should understand that if he does so, that Caldwell is already starting from a risk-taker position with certain fans of this club. Not like the Lions nor Lewand should get any beneft of the doubt when it comes to hiring winning coaches. This franchise is a historical loser in the Super Bowl race, having never qualified for the game. So, why should anyone care anyway. Chances are, Caldwell is digging his own grave trusting a man to be his OC who lacks real credibility in the real world, but is a pure coaching genius worthy of total forgiveness and a fresh start with the Lions.
Tattoo that on your forehead, Lewand.
The NFL is a business: not sure this is a good business decision though.
I'm not a Lions fan so I have no horse in this race, but if Tressel is able to win you football games, I'd find a way to get over it. I get it. Everyone here hates Tressel. I hate him too. But winning cures all. And you Lions fans out there, of all people, should be starved for a winning team by now. So much so that you almost shouldn't give two shits who is at the helm of your team, as long as they can win.
is wrong. Tressel coached and served as AD at Youngstown State before getting his job at Ohio State. He landed his "second chance" customized job at the University of Akron, working in "strategic engagement." In so doing, Tressel took a $3 million pay cut.
But, of course, when he returned to Ohio State for the Michigan game in 2012 and was introduced at halftime, the man whom the school claimed paid a "terrible price" for his mistakes was rewarded with a hero's welcome by Buckeye fans who gave him a standing ovation.
And if the Lions win a Super Bowl with the Senator legislating its offense, then may be Lions fans will also forgive and forget his days regularly beating Michigan and operating as a rogue cheater. To many Lions fans, those aren't necessarily bad things.
Maybe he should get an "L" tattooed on his forehead. For, uh, "Lions." Yeah, "Lions" - that's the ticket!
If you're abandoning the Lions over this, you were never a Lions fan in the first place... you were a Michigan fan who cheered for the Lions sometimes. You won't be missed. 99% of the team's fanbase will not give two shits. Bye.
If it takes Tressel to do it, so be it. I didn't like the guy when he was playing against us either. Why? Because that sweater vest just was a symbol for defeat. LET NOW THE SWEATERVEST BE THE SYMBOL OF VICTORY.
Sarcasm, but seriously, get over it or don't watch the Lions, nobody is forcing you to be a fan.
Edit: And the groupthink strikes again, downvoted 5 times because individuals have this massive hatred for Tressel. I just envision an "Ace Ventura Lace's Out, Dan!!!" mural that must be impressive at these people's residents who freely neg because they don't share the same opinion. Lol Unbelievable.
I completely disagree with your point on Tressel, but I won't neg you for having a terrible opinion and lack of hate for a sweater vest.
And i respect your opinion good sir. I'm not asking anyone to like Tressel. Nothing excites me about how he threw all these violations under a blanket with the all cost mentality of beating Michigan and it worked. He beat a very successful highly favorited Miami team to win a NC in 2002. Worked too well because the violations Ohio St. got in the aftermath were hardly enough to account for the successes that brought his team. However, I am able to seperate the animosity from the collegiate to the pro level. I will freely eat my words if this turns into a blundered mess but eh, its the Lions, you can't go worse than 0-16 unless they add more games to the NFL schedule fortunately.
SOMEBODY TAKE LO$EWAND'S MICHIGAN MAN CARD FROM HIM RIGHT NOW
in Michigan if there was one organization that won the ultimate championship in any sport, the one team above all others would be celebrated with the greatest sense of pride and joy, it would be the Detroit Lions because of the deep-seated loyalty and strength of its fanbase.
And I think Bo was right. And to a certain extent we know this, only because every major team in the state has won a major championship or had its day in recent years except one -- the Lions.
So, I know it won't matter who is on staff and how things play out, if the team wins and eventually secures a Super Bowl championship. That day will be the greatest sports day in the state of Michigan, ever.
Bo said this when he was president of the Tigers, and so he was talking from an understanding that went beyond the state's love of its college programs. But until that day comes when the Lions finally get over the Super Bowl hump, they are fanbase targets for the perception of every dumb azz move that could underline failure in reaching that goal.
So, the question is, why go there with Tressel who isn't even an acknoweldged offensive mind based on any football assessment regardless of whether you think conservative play-calling will better suit a team with more offensive talent than most NFL clubs? I mean forget the coaching relationship and connections beteween Caldwell and Tressel, but why is this guy your first OC choice for the Lions, who don't play anything close to Tresselball and who if they did, would bore the crap out of their fans?
Tressel as OC is pure speculation.
It could be a win-win though. If they win, great. If they lose and have a shit offense, we get to run him out of town!
It's a free tattoo.
another DUI so he gets fired? That might help the Lions win.
Spartan fan will be like, ok it worked for us. Wolverine fan, Go Packers!
All kidding aside, if they win will it really matter? Think of it as when Chelios joined the Wings.
It's on the Internet. It has to be true.
They root for laundry. The only thing that consistently generates money, goodwill, attendance, interest ... is winning.
This is the attitude you want your front office to have.
That said, I think that he'll be exposed in the NFL having never run an offense against defenses whose worst starters were the best players in college. In college you both bring in talent and scheme around it; the NFL requires coaches to scheme only (barring GM/coaches).
on his forehead is what it will take to win?
...he was a manager for the football team. This is just gross.
if he sucks, win (ha ha Tressel).
if he's good, win (yeah Lions).
not sure why everyone is over-reacting -- it's not like he was the devil.
This comment isn't going to go over well with the people in Michigan.
