Lewan the goat

Submitted by Magnum P.I. on

I think we can thank Taylor Lewan for this one, folks. He needs to grow up and realize that playing tough is not the same thing as playing stupid. He needs to watch some film from Jake Long to see how to conduct yourself as a tough lineman. His idiotic penalty on the second drive submarined that drive and really served as the turning point for the whole game. Should have been 14-0 to start the game. Instead, the spiral began. Hopefully Lewan learns how devasting a stupid mistake like that can be for his team and never does it again. This isn't high school. It's not cute to get personal fouls after the play.

neutralized the best DE in the country in Clayborn.  Clayborn was a non-factor and he wasn't doubled team which is impressive.   Lewan is young and will only get better.

He did a great job of neutralizing him when he wasn't neutralizing our offense with boneheaded penalties, or pissing off RR so much that they sat him down and put Huyge in at LT instead.

EDIT: I want to be clear that he'll be excellent, and is already our best blocking OT.  But his temper and occasional mental lapses are drivekilling.  That 15-yarder early stopped a drive dead in its tracks and we didn't score again for the rest of the half.

he's the goat, but his penalties hurt a lot. Jake Long was infamous not only for spectacular play and not giving up sacks, but he also had what one or two penalties called on him his entire career at UM?? I think Lewan will be a great lineman for us, but he does need to reign it in. Penalties do nothing but hurt us and when it happens on 3rd down it does kill drives.

high school and the sky is the limit for the kid.  Can't wait until he's an upper classman.

Yes, he did make some youthful mistakes today but he is going to be a great one.

I love how you automatically think the drive would have been otherwise successful.  Yes, it was a mistake, but don't give me that it cost us the game.  Smith's fumble was a much bigger mistake.

The loss sucks, no question. But put down the bottle and back off from the ledge.

Lewan made a mistake but it's 11 guys on each side of the ball and the coaches that determine the outcome.

Lewan will learn from this.

had his ups and downs in this one but overall the future is bright when he learns from his mistakes. This kid does have an upside and he deserves to be on the field on Saturdays

I know that he made some dumb mistakes, but hopefully this game will be a wakeup call for him.  Also, he was matched up against one of the best linemen in college football, so I'll cut him a little slack.  But a team loses or wins because of everyone on the team, not because of a single player.

We are lucky to have him, we're better with him out there, and he will learn from his mistakes.

This loss belongs to the whole team, just as every win belongs to the whole team.

Lewan's lack of self control was huge.  We had momentum and gave up our chance because of a stupid play.  It is different than a missed block or blown assignment.  He doesn't keep his cool and needs to learn.  I don't care how good he is, if he can't control his temper he needs to sit.  He blew the drive up by himself on this drive.  It is what it is.

Lewan's plays were stupid, yeah. He's going to learn though. And everyone around the program and around the country notices him fellas, he's going to be really good.

Gotta take it in stride.
