A letter from Brady Hoke...

Submitted by pinkfloyd2000 on

Saw this on the Scout forum, and had to bring it here. A fan wrote Brady Hoke a letter, saying that he was looking forward to the seaon and wishing him well, etc. Brady returned a letter, handwritten, with this (verbatim):

Thanks for the note, and I love your passion for Michigan Football. We are excited and humbled to be at Michigan, and look forward in preparing the 132th team. Have a great spring and thanks again.

Go Blue, Brady Hoke

132th. Any other coach does that, and he's an idiot...but Hoke is so awesome, he can use terms like that and not only get away with it, but make it sound awesome. He plays by no one's rules.

Christ, lighten up...I actually thought it was awesome he did that (use that term), but even more so, take the time to respond to a fan with a hand-written letter in the middle of Spring practice.

is the kind of mistake you make during spring practice. He'll get tougher, install more of the vocabulary, and by fall that's a mistake he won't make. Manball.

It's a perfectly crumulent word.

At the same time, 'playing by no one else's grammar rules' is not a way to demonstrate one's awesomeness. This isn't an offensive system; you can't just change shit around and expect people call you "innovative" or a "grammar pioneer."

While I don't exactly disagree (being a grammar snob myself), I'm not sure he expected that little reply to be disseminated over the message boards. And to be honest, while it was cool that Lloyd Carr was a former HS English teacher and made his players learn new words in the dictionary, he wasn't a very typical college football coach.

Press conference. He said he makes up words. Obviously numerical rankings too.

Or would that be his 1nd or 1rd press conference?

...because folks might not criticize him for things they may have criticized RichRod for is TREMENDOUSLY pointless.

Also, if you fancy yourself a critic, be prepared to receive criticism yourself. It goes with the territory.

I hope you find this criticism constructive. It's not critical that you do, but it could help you achieve a critical mass of MGoBlog credibility.

is one of the best things about football coaches. One of my favorite quotes of all time is by Bum Phillips, talking about Bear Bryant (who Phillips was assistant to at Texas A&M):

"He can take his'n and beat your'n and take your'n and beat his'n."

I don't expect a UM Professor of English Lit to know jack shit about football, and I don't expect our head football coach to be completely grammatically correct when speaking or writing. If either of them are, great, but let's keep in mind why they're hired.
