Agreed (on attrition). There was a post several weeks ago stating that it is well know by the Michigan cognoscenti that several players would not be on the team next year. I won't speculate (under pain of Bolivia,) but it should become very clear once Spring practice begins. If you must speculate, all you really have to do is figure out who was injured prior to 2012 or during 2012, and had to sit out significant time. You can count on at least two of them receiving a medical waiver or the like. This should bring the number of spaces up to 18. You should expect another 2 - 4 unexpected departures, bringing the count up to 20 - 22. With back-dating, I thing the class can easily be 23 - 24.

This class will be much larger than 16. That's the number of scholarships available right now, but attrition will occur due to injuries, transfers, forgone fifth years, early NFL draft entrees, player misconduct, etc. We'll probably end up with a little over 20 commits, which is should be plenty to have a top 5 class if there's a lot of quality top-to-bottom.

Or something along those lines this year, then the interest level among the most elite recruits will perk up even more.  ND and ohio both had great years (and were the two luckiest teams in Division 1 according to a study someone did, IIRC).  They ended up with stellar classes this year.  We ended up with a great class even with a less-than-great season.  If we step up our record this year with a favorable home schedule, that factor added to what is now a demonstrably stable program and a coaching staff that has garnered increasing buzz about Michigan, some of these top kids may be signing up.

Assuming that the class grows a bit (don't think that it is unrealistic to expect the class to end up around 20-23), I would predict:

QB - 1

RB - 2

WR - 3

TE - 2

OL - 3

DL - 4

LB - 2

CB - 2

S - 2

Plus a preferred walk-on to a low/mid 3 star QB

Oh.... Almost forgot - 2 long snappers and 4 holders

Even more  impressive, imo, was they did not take a single player from outside CA until they landed their second 5 star RB, Lendal White. Truly impressive class, indeed, and may also be the highest rated since, as you say, the scouting sites were founded.

I figured I could sneak over here for a second and give you a little help.

Juju Smith is being recruited at safety.

Kalen Ballage is a legit option at running back (90% he's being recruited there). Shai McKenzie is a possibility too; I'd add those two.

Hurd is a zero chance option.

Christian McCaffrey is high on the WR board; Michigan is the only school looking at him there.

Andrew Williams out of GA is a top target at DE. Still don't think Henderson has an offer.

Braden Smith likes Michigan; I'd put him at OT

Nick Watkins is a longshot, but will visit; put him at CB; same for Tyler Luatua at TE

Garrett Dickerson is a must-add at TE as is Nic Weishar

Michigan's chances with Hand are much more than a dream.

Hope that helps.
