The FannMan

We know all this stuff already. Brian has posted front page articles on it with charts and numers. No one is here saying that Les is a saint. The problem is that Saint James has moved to the NFL promised land and left us wandering in the waste land while recruits (and players?) are moving elsewhere. Is Les perfect - hell no. Is he a very good coach who can save recuiting and maybe save the program - yes.

People on this blog have correctly pointed out that Rich Rod was never given a chance because people lined up against him before he got here. His character was attacked for leaving WVU in the first place, for not paying the WVU buy-out, for shreding some papers, for Pac-Man and Noel Devine, etc. This doomed his tenure here with many fans before it even got going. These kinds of posts are doing the same thing to Miles. So I am asking you to please stop. You have every right to your view, but consider the consequences.

If you want to be moralistic about it and say I am selling out the character of the program by supproting Miles if he is the coach, well, you have every right to have that view. However, in the real world, Harbaugh's bailing and Brandon's "plan" have totaly screwed us blind. We are where we are, and right now Les Miles makes a ton of sense.

Or maybe Gruden will get hired and a whole differnt group of people will pull out the knives to undermine him.

I was just asking you not to undermine the next coach if it is Miles like people did to Rich Rod. Remember the whole support him when he is here thing?

In reality, Rich did try to screw WVU out of a lot of money. Most people shrugged it off as a business deal gone bad that would get sorted out by the Courts. However, to some people, this was morally wrong. Did this disqaulify him as a coach in your mind? Maybe I missed your post back then. Or did you cave in on your morals because he was a good coach? For that matter, Harbaugh is divorced and has a DUI. To some, but not all, both of those are signs of a lack of moral values. Where was your post on Harbaugh?

You are no doubt thinking of the differences b/t Rich and JH and Miles. Let me save you some effort - I agree they are different. They will be viewed differently by different people. Moral judgment is subective. It allows one to determine an outcome and pass judgment in support of that decision. For example, I may feel that that your cheap shot at my morals after I just asked you not to undermine Les if he is hired is complete and utter crap. However, I respect your right to disagree and let's leave it there as I find blog flame wars a waste of time. Just please consider my request not to form or join a Jihad against Miles if he is hired.

a Les Miles hire will do anything but unite the fan base. Makes me wonder just how legit DB's press conference was when he discussed that very thing.

I think it's safe to say that a large majority of Michigan fans would welcome Miles with open arms. As it was regarding RR, this board is not a representative sample when it comes to perceptions of Miles.

Don't even bother to know what he's actually done. He's just that "ex- Michigan guy who's won". And a large percentage of them don't really care about right or wrong (obviously from this thread) and either don't remember Bo, or didn't listen to what he preached. We'd be better off if his books were required reading.

Unfortunately, I have to agree with you.

I don't think the "average" fan knows anything about recruiting. Hell, they prolly don't even know what the scholly limit is or that there is one (let alone anything about the negative recruiting rumors, wife-banging rumors, etc.) To those fans all they'll see is Les Miles with a NC under his belt and a boatload of SEC wins. So, while I may not think he's the best fit for us, I'm guessing a ton of more casual fans will be thrilled with the idea.

I will grant you that my sample size is small. A few relatives, some ppl I know that work at the U, some friends, etc. Prolly about 20-30 ppl total. But of those, I and one other are the only ones that follow MGoBlog or any other obsessive M-based media. Yet all of them are dyed in the wool Michigan fans. (newsflash - not following mgoblog does not mean you are not a fan.)

The impression I get from most of them is "Gee that Les Miles guy wins a lot of games and he's from Michigan! We should hire him!."

I've read every post above and I can't believe some of this. I understand that Michigan stands for something special, afterall there is a Michigan Difference. But, the last coach we hired walked out on his team and didn't even tell them he was leaving. Many here are pointing fingers at a coach who has in the past pushed the envelope of the rules to the edge and in some cases apparently crossed some if not many ethical lines to try and keep up or get an advantage against his competition.

I'm not a fan of any of the bad things I have heard that Les Miles has done, but I am not about to play judge, jury and executioner when I have never spoke to him or witnessed the enviornment in which he lives. Lying to kids is bad, there is no two ways about it, but remember these kids lie to. How many times have we experienced some 18 year-old telling Michigan they are coming here only to sign with someone else.

We need to get off our collective high horses for a minute. College athletics is not some church altar where only the honest and chaste work and live. This is big business and it's all about money. As much as we all want to think it's about helping these kids get an education and preparing them for life, it's about filling a stadium, fielding a competitive team, selling the brand and getting to bowl games all to make more money and do it again. When they are successful at that, all those other sports that exist because of football, get to continue.

There are injustices throughout college athletics and backroom deals and players teasing coaches and then signing with someone else and leaving you in lurch with no QB. Shit happens and no one is morally perfect.

Maybe this time, this fanbase can behind the coach before he gets here and give him a chance to prove he's better than the critics make him out to be. In my mind, the shit that the "factions" at Michigan have pulled over the last week and the last three years have done some serious damage to a family and a football program.

Let's all take a step back and wait and see what happens before passing judgement. Remember, Tressel and his AD lied to everyone about the tat deal and the players are lying to OSU. It goes on everywhere. I think both sides know what they are getting into.

The players use the schools to get to the NFL and the schools use the players to make money.

A friend and fellow wolverine predicted at the beginning of the season that UofM would go 7-5 this season and RR would be fired. He was right, but how did that help the team?

If Brandon hires Hoke, what do you suggest I do? Renounce my University? Heck no. We've all just got to suck it up and come together for the benefit of the team. This past year, how many games did we start off on fire, only to come undone in the 2nd quarter after some mistake was made? So much of college football is attitude and momentum. This year's team was young and couldn't overcome the penalties and turnovers. With a year of seasoning, (~19 starters return) they should be much better equipped to overcome the negative plays.

However, if they are playing in a less than full stadium, and the crowd is booing them and the coach, I don't see how that helps us get back to where we want to be.

I'm suggesting that some people saying "trust DB" in the context of hiring LM are making that point only because they want LM to be the coach, and that they wouldn't be making that argument if this thread was about Hoke's shortcomings.

If hoke is hired I would buy the first "Hokus Pokus" t-shirt at MGoStore, suppot the guy and pray that he turns into the next Bo

If he hires Gruden, I would need to know where one finds a Chucky doll these days.

If he hires Pa(e)tterson, I would support either of them too.

You see, I am a Michigan fan. I loved the team when it coached by Bo, by Mo (who drove me nuts), by Carr, and by Rich Rod. I will continue to love the team. This isn't about scoring points on a freaking blog.

[Edit - wow, did I have typos on this one. It is too late for me, folks. Good night all. Go Blue!]

I'll be a fan of the team no matter who the coach is too. Doesn't mean I should look the other way no matter what any individual member of the organization does. You've got to have some standard somewhere. I mean, to extrapolate to something silly: if the next coach was Ted Kazinsky, would you be running to the MGoStore for your UnaCoacher hoodie?

It's not black or white. Nobody's perfect and there are two sides to every story. This is about where you draw your line in the sand in the gray region. LM isn't even willing to talk to his own players about what he's done. To me, that's a big deal.

Les Miles is from Krypton. They don't have any kind of signing limits there so he is adjusting to a new environment.

This also explains his incredible sexual prowess and superhuman strength.

I just snapped about a day and a half ago after the tenth "OMG is there any truth to those rumors about Miles and Moeller's wife?" post I read.

After that I figured, in this information free environment, reinventing Les Miles as a superhuman sex maniac would be much more productive than anything else I could do with my time.

After reading this thread on Les Miles I was amazed. I hope all you moral people standing in judgment of LM make it to church today, read the part in the bible on standing in judgment. I not going religious on you I’m saying you are talking a lot of morals here could you stand up to the review? I love to see a lot of these accusations backed up with facts you may come up with a couple but most of this stuff is just rumors.

M-Wolverine

January 9th, 2011 at 12:44 AM ^

Or read any of Brian's post breaking it down?

I don't think you have to be religious to have morals. But I'm sure I could stand up to the test some of these people posit, of not lying or cheating in business, or worse, people who trust you and are supposed to be part of your family. (Players). I think it's far sadder that the Pryor "everybody murders" rant seems to be the philosophy of a lot of people. And that they want Michigan's program to follow it.

And I'm sorry that Bo apparently isn't only dead...he's forgotten.

I'm not arguing that Les Miles won't get into heaven or that he'll be reincarnated as a worm. I'm arguing that his behavior suggests that he isn't fit to the lead the team.

I imagine that at least some pattern of behavior by a person would lead you to believe that a person was unfit to coach the team, even if it wasn't Miles.

Well, hello there. You're right. We are pretty terrible. Thanks for pointing that out. Your argument is so convincing that I just became a MSU fan. I will now walk the earth, jobless and dumb, until I am thrown into a ditch and spit on by my own mother, a mother who eats seven desserts a day and fucks cowboys because their boots are shiny.

Every day I tell myself there is no way MGoBlog can be more entertaining than it was yesterday. Then, a thread like this comes along and raises my entertainment standards. No way this gets topped tomorrow.

From Wikipedia:

In August 2005, days before Miles was to make his debut as the coach of LSU, Hurricane Katrina struck southern Louisiana.

Coincidence? I think not. Les Miles is THE DEVIL.

Not to start a political debate but to me it's a lot like Cash for Clunkers. I knew a fuckton of Republicans and conservative friends/relatives who were against the program/Obama but still took advantage of it. Why? They got a great deal. Les does this because it's the norm in the SEC, especially at top flight programs. If you want to compete with Saban it's going to be very, very hard to do it without doing this.
