Lee Corso on ESPN GameDay

Submitted by FauxMo on

OK, this is not a joke, and I am not trying to be cruel. But is anyone else watching College GameDay this morning? Is Corso just unprepared, or does he really, really seem to not have all of his mental faculties anymore (i.e. senility, dementia, etc.)? It sure seems like the latter to me. I mean, I have watched almost every Saturday this fall, and he hasn't been much better, nor did I ever really enjoy his over the top shtick, but he looks downright out of it and confused up there today. He is referring to incorrect teams, cannot pronounce anyone's name correctly, and seems really, really out of it...

Ah, the anonymity of Internet message boards. No tact required. A simple check of Corso's Wikipedia page would have given you quick overview of his 2009 stroke and impressive recovery, and that he's been married to his wife for 57 years and has three children. Stuff like that.

Yeah that was awkward on my part too. I should have also included that you could learn about his playing and coaching career and more background on his history on GameDay ... all without having to go on an Internet message board and ask "no joke -- but is he senile/demented?"

It's because of his stroke. I feel sorry for him, but I'm glad ESPN didn't kick him to the curb because of his health. It's hard to watch sometimes but I'm glad he is still there. I also like how the rest of the team are helping him and showing him respect in something he helped build.

He only talks for 2min a show, not a big deal.  Let him sit there and put on his costumes, still a great tradition.  It's not like Holtz where he was getting a ton of air time.  The other guys know to cut him off when he starts to struggle.

I just now realized the host of gameday changed (the 4th guy up there with corso, desmond and herbstreit). He looks exactly like the guy he replaced. When did this happen?

The biggest reason I watch gameday is Corso. Without him, its much closer to the unwatchable equivalents for the NFL.

The stumbles can be painful at times, but mostly he's ok. He should keep the job as long as he wants it. I'll miss him when he stops.

he's also hits 80 this year.  I've loved watching him over the years, at least until the show became a 3 hour snoozefest.  But for his sake I think its time to hang 'em up.

He's the only thing that makes CGD somewhat watchable. Herbstreit and Desmond are fine, but pretty uninteresting IMO. Pollack is just an SEC schill and all the extras are just fluff. At least Corso represents something about the show from yesteryear when I enjoyed it as a kid.

It's fair to ask the question but exercise compassion. I have trouble watching him sometimes, because I have such memories of him and the show before the stroke. Corso brought a madcap energy to the set-- it was as if Herbstreit and Fowler were only there to set up his crazy "Not so fasts," and wacked out analysis. People got into Gameday because of him. The sign should read "Gameday--Built by Lee Corso." So yeah, I watch him struggle and sometimes I wince, but I still appreciate him out of the respect for what he brought in the past, and what he can still give us. He is as iconic in college football as the great Keith Jackson. Think of how much you'll miss him when he's gone.

WE have one job: Make sure Urbz is not as relaxed and confident before the game next Saturday!

That was pretty disturbing seeing up there chilling & laughing like that. Hope Mike D'Antonio saw that DisRespekt!!!

But he's still fun and they have Herbstreit, Howard, and Pollack to handle all of the more informative stuff. I'm not sure who they'd replace him with. The biggest problem for me is Gameday being three hours. I preferred the two hour slot.

Corso's on-air struggles, there's no good reason to let him stay on the show so he can "go out on his terms" or because "he's earned it" or some other justification.  No one wants to see another person struggle through something that used to be easy for him/her.  I've certainly done my share of criticizing Corso, but I'm done with it.  I hope that he retires very soon and enjoys the rest of his days, however long that may be.

I'm not afraid to be an outlier here (Malcom Gladwell reference), but I've always liked Corso.  He's the funny man to the Fowler/Davis/Herbstreit/Howard set-up role.  I'm sad he's not doing so well.  He is probably not long for Gameday.  I wish him the best.

I can tell he is struggling, but I can also tell he loves his job and does it passionately. He is doing his best, and that's better than the vast majority of us could ever do on national tv. I am not in love with the guy, but I respect him for what he is doing at his age.

Corso adds a human element. He's like that grandfather you watch games with on your couch. Not always the most eloquent and clearly lost a bit since his stroke and probably winding down his career, but part of the family nonetheless. I think he loves his job and what folks say on the Internet doesn't change that. Maybe we should focus on pushing past being uncomfortable with old age.

Corso might seem bad, but consider this ... Lou Holtz is younger than Corso & Ditka. They are all getting old, but Corso is going better than Holtz. Ditka is unstoppable apparently.

He had a stroke a few years ago as we have discussed in the past. He is still doing this simply because he loves it and wouldn't have anything else to do. I applaud him for continuing to work, but I think everyone knows the end of his career is fast approaching.

Whatever people may believe about Corso's value to College GameDay, I do admire his tenacity in the face of an event that does in fact sideline a lot of people for good. There was an Orlando Sentinel article written upon his return to GameDay following the stroke, and he basically doubles down on preparation insomuch as he can, even practicing sets of words out loud to avoid confusing them. He may retire soon anyway, but by appearances he was not going to let his medical status make the decision for him if he could avoid it - I do respect that.

post.  Are you going to criticize Bob woodruff because he pauses and mispronounces some words?  How about making fun of veteran amputees because they walk funny. If you don't like Lee corso because he is older then fine just say so.

He didn't just have a stroke, he's had multiple strokes and any of our MGOdoctors on here will tell you that he certainly could be dealing with additional tia's (mini strokes). He also seems to struggle more in colder weather. He's been an iconic figure for a long time. He should leave when he wants to or when he feels he can't do it anymore

I think he's slowly losing his marbles to be completely honest. It's sad to see but he is getting up there. Looks like he's still enjoying life so good for him, but he does seem to get tired at times. Not sleepy but like he needs to gather himself and take a break.

Considering his stroke I think it's admirable that he puts himself in a position on tv to be ridiculed. I also think that his speech gets worse the colder the weather.

I couldn't care less what he sounds like or what material he adds to the discussion. It's going to be a really sad day when he isn't a part of college football Saturday's anymore. I completely respect and admire the work he has done to overcome his medical situation and fight his way back. I met him briefly in Tuscaloosa last year in the team hotel before the Mississippi St game and he seemed to enjoy the entire atmosphere more than anyone on Earth possibly could. He walks around just taking it all in and was as gracious as could possibly be--there was definitely a touch of old man wandering around lost but he couldn't care less. Just enjoys every minute
