LBs vs. Indiana

Submitted by BroadShouldersBlue on

I was trying to pay attention but was distracted by the chaos...how was our LB play last game? I know Brian will obviously address it in the UFR, but I was curious if any of you noticed anything. Were the LBs just getting beat, or was the defensive line not doing a great job of preventing the OL from getting up on the LBs?

No question...should've went with Ross and Gedeon and their athleticism...or pulled a LB and put Charlton and dropped RJS to even more of a hybrid spot with 4 DL in front of him.

Bolden is ungodly slow for his position. He looks like tiny DT when's out there. Morgan just always seems to be a step late this year.

I will commend them for getting the defense set, they both do a tremendous job of being QBs in the center of the defense.

Hopefully they play better versus PSU, which I expect. Elliott is scary though because it's a spread and the best back we'll see all year.

I see a lot of people talking about Bolden's weak play. When we were going through our great defensive run earlier in the year, I recall Bolden not playing that much. We had Peppers playing close to the line as a SS/LB next to Morgan. Has the coaching staff changed something for the worst?

I'm just not sure our LBs are the sideline to sideline kind of guys you'd hope for. Smart no doubt, but not very fast or athletic. And IU was able to expose that big time.

I will say that I'm sure they were gassed, like the whole defense, by IU's tempo, but with the depth on the DL thinning out, it's not looking good when it comes to trying to stop Miller, Barrett, Elliott, Marshall, and every other speedster on OSU's roster in two weeks.

Every one of those guys are better than Jordan Howard. I'm not saying we're for sure going to lose, but we'll need some things to go our way in that game if we want to win it, because I guarantee you that after Saturday night, Elliott and the OSU offensive line have to be licking their chops at the thought of going against us now.

Glasgow being out hurt and our front 7 did struggle but we also did play one of the most experienced and probably the best Oline in the BIG and the second best running back in the BIG this yr....Indiana's offense hasnt been their problem this year, its been their defense!

At the risk of being negged to Bolivia, may I ask a stupid question to the group?

If LB is a weakness for the team, which it seems to be given physical limitations of our LBs, can you simplify the scheme for them to maximize their potential? In otherwords, could you say, blitz the weakest LB on a consistent basis so they know their only responsibility on a given play is to get to the QB as fast as possible?

Or does that make you too easy to neutralize as a D if it's that obvious?

Just seems to me we should send these guys on blitzes constantly and hope to at minimum disrupt the timing of the opposing QBs, etc.

Some will say, "Glasgow being out really hurt our linebackers flowing to the football." Let's just be honest about it: our linebackers have been non-existent all season. They aren't fast. They aren't big. They aren't physical.

Our best linebacker type is Jabrill Peppers at 6' 205 pounds. Morgan and Bolden have both underachieved all season. IU exposed that even more than Minnesota, Utah, and Michigan State previously. Our best Defensive lineup moving forward is some variation of: Taco, Wormley, Henry, RJS, Morgan, Peppers, Hill, Wilson, Dymonte, Stribling, and Lewis.

Having Ross, Morgan, and Bolden on the field at the same time has been a disaster.

That's what I was kinda getting to earlier in this thread. Peppers was actually playing a lot of hybrid LB for us at one point in the season. Though now it seems he's dropping more often into coverage to check receivers. Maybe we need to let Peppers play more hybrid LB and let someone else take his spot at SS if things don't get better.

Bolden/Morgan will not be able to hold up against Ohio State's speed and agressiveness. The back seven is go have to be a dime variation of Morgan, Peppers, Wilson, Dymonte, Hill, Stribling/Clark, and Lewis. We do not match up well with Ohio State on the defensive side of the ball without Glasgow, Ojemudjia, or Mone.

Clark has made it clear he can't make plays on the ball the last few weeks. We simply have to be agressive and hope they make mistakes. We will make them make mistakes by having more speed on the field and having Morgan shadow Barrett, and Peppers shadow Zeke.
