An LB is out 6 weeks with an injury

but, injuries are going to happen. We can sustain one at LB this year, and probably on the D-Line and secondary. We also appear to have more than one back and a lot of receivers. Need Devin and the O-Line in their cloaks of invincibility, though.

But yeah, don't want anyone hurt or anything...but we are deep at LB.

Could also be Gedeon or McCray. They played most of that long ASU drive as I recall.

Pure speculation from game tape reveals that Gedeon seemed to have some shoulder trouble late in the game after a tackle. Hopefully he's alright.
September 2nd, 2014 at 11:19 AM ^
Not that I would want anyone to be injured but if it is Gedeon, this seems like a perfect opportunity for a medical redshirt.

All they need is a documented injury and him not playing after the halfway point in the season, and he is eligible for a medical redshirt. I.E. they have ~1,000,000 LB's who are decent to good on the roster so they can just sit him the rest of the season.
September 2nd, 2014 at 12:21 PM ^
You need to have a season-ending injury for a medical redshirt.
Also, Chengalis (not suprisingly) had no luck getting any info out of Hoke just now:
Asked Hoke on Big Ten call if any injury conerns beyond Peppers/what his status is for ND:"We're not going to talk about about any injuries"

You well know that's not what's meant by "season-ending." This is all a moot point if it's the player being rumored as he's not going to sit once he's healthy again.

hamstring injury, something that can linger. Is trying to skirt around the rules worth the risk, especially when you have to supply documentation of the injury?
September 2nd, 2014 at 11:36 AM ^
The minimal redshirts stuff is getting out of hand. Gedeon was good when he played, but I would rather know they're going to have someone awesome in the future in addition to all the awesomeness they already have.
September 2nd, 2014 at 12:12 PM ^
We do have several LBs redshirting (Ferns, Furbush, Winovich, Wangler), plus Darrin Kirkland signed up already. I have to think that playing guys early helps recruit more guys.
September 2nd, 2014 at 12:23 PM ^
We had 12 and 13 players burn their redshirt the past 2 years so I think its pretty clear that if you are ready Hoke will play you. Anyone trying to negative recruit on that basis has zero legs to stand on.
There is no need to make a special case out of 1 player here or there to prove a point that has already been made. And frankly except at some skill positions for a very special player we don't want a bevy of freshmen out there. In most cases their heads are swimming and even a guy like Mone who is a huge guy will be a much stronger man down the road then he is today and most guys are not like Mone in terms of physical development. But we do play them if they make the case - see our LT who is probably 15-20 lbs below where we'd prefer. This is not basketball where many freshman make a serious impact.

A lot of recruits actively look to see how you use freshmen. Getting known for using them makes recruiting easier.

Don't be Morgan, don't be Morgan, don't be Morgan...

6 weeks will put whoever it is back into rotation by the Penn St. or maybe MSU game. That should be fine.

ND isn't chopped liver. and i kind of hope that no one gets injured.
September 2nd, 2014 at 2:13 PM ^
Of course, ND is not chopped liver. ND is chicken salad.

but I'd guess if it's either of them that Ryan in some way shifts over and we get more of him, Morgan, Bolden out there at once.
September 2nd, 2014 at 11:53 AM ^
Instead of hoping who it is, maybe you can hope who it is not? Accomplishes the same thing, but might make you feel less like a bad person.
September 2nd, 2014 at 11:04 AM ^
almost certainly a broken bone, probably not of the leg. Not of the leg because nobody was helped off the field.

Not that I doubt, I'd just like a link.

Unfortunate but realistically its football and injuries happen. Wisconsin lost both its DTs I believe in 1 half. We've been pretty fortunate this year unlike the last few ones going into the season.
Technically only 2 guys "started" since we opened with 5 in the secondary. But announced starters were Bolden, RJS, and Ryan (or if you believe Brian there were 4 announced starters). Not going to speculate since it is worthless to guess but Mike McCray will go from "7th LB" to 6th and potentially this pushes the Michael Ferns "no no burned redshirt please" into "well forced to burn a redshirt". As others have said of all the position groups this is the one that could absorb an injury along with perhaps DTs.

Can't edit my post but I wrote McCray would be pushed from 7th LB to 6th... unless it is McCray who got hurt of course.

Interesting. I thought it was a coach's decision to save the redshirt rather than have him run around on special teams but if that is accurate than maybe not.

There's a huge difference between Sam Webb said, someone on a message board said Sam Webb said, and someone on a message board said that someone on another message board said that Sam Webb said.
I couldn't find anything on his twitter but did see a thread on another forum that I couldn't read.
