LB John Thompson
I was talking to a friend last night about this years football team and everytime we talk M football we always have to bring this up and laugh. Does anyone remember the 08' Wisconsin game when John Thompson made a play and the announcer called him the Machete? Just curious, thought it was very funny, never heard anyone call him that before, or ever thought he had a nickname.
I laugh too when I see replays of that play, but not because of the nickname. I laugh because a "top 10" Wisconsin team is about to lose to what would go on to be a 3-9 Michigan team.
i love in the threet run at 7:30 how he gets both hands on the ball for about 15 yards like he was thinking "i should have been caught from behind by now"
Say what you want about Threet but he could run the read very well. He just needed to run very well.
It always looked that way to me, too. Hopefully Denard will progress to that (read) level and bring some accuracy as well.
because no defense believed he would run... but there were times that he handed it off where he should kept it and took off....
Yes and no. I seem to remember him being downright good at it by the time Penn State rolled around, which was part of why the offense was rolling for that first half before he was injured. I love me some Forcier, and he did so much more than most freshman can, but he was just bad at the read and the ball fake last year.
I think he was called the Machete in the Notre Dame game in 07
Someone from the team called him "Machete" during the pregame introductions. It was his nickname among the team. I called him that from then and forever more.
Its my favorite nickname I just wish he would have been better so I can say my favorite nickname player was the best lb of the decade or something like that.
That was one of my favorite Michigan games of all time. We played so terrible in the first half and it looked like Wisconsin was going to blow us out. A few miracle plays later, I was running laps around my apartment building yelling like a mad man. It's too bad that game won't really be remembered because we finished 3-9 that season.
