Late Late Night Open Thread

Against my better judgement, because we seem to have a ton of new posters (lockdown time?) that think Michigan should go old SMU/Miami style win at all costs, and apparently didn't really believe anything Bo or Lloyd preached (other than when it makes a good soundbyte or sig line or post reply), but there are enough reliable posters still up that it will save them some scrolling.

sigh...

Is it okay to drink after brushing your teeth if its liquor? I would brush my teeth again, but I'm in bed and the bottle of J&B is in arms reach and don't plan to get up again.

Or anyone equally Saban-y. Like? I've been convinced Gruden might not be a disaster, and could be the splash we need...but don't think it's likely. I actually agree with Brian that Mullen's age is really attractive, especially if we use all that $$$ Brandon is willing to spend on another big time DC. Can almost for sure keep Denard. Actually like him more than Patterson due to age and the fact he's from the north and should have more ties (though I love Patterson's consistent defense). And I think Hoke is a GREAT guy and underrated coach. I just don't think he'd unify the fan base at all right now, so it wouldn't necessarily work for the program or be good for him. Schembechler Hall and the department would give him 110% support though. Just not sure that's enough.

If Brandon goes off the board I could be excited too. But the guy will have my support. You just 1. Can't cheat and 2. Have to think the idea of athletics is to give the student the best experience of their lives. Any guy is going to have to win too; that's just the nature of the beast. But yes, I can live with 8-11 wins, and trying to do things upright, vs. multiple championships in a player farm that cheats.

Hasn't Mullen been pretty much tied-down? I like Gruden too, and think he would clean up recruiting (which, let's face it, is more than half the battle in college football).

The silver bullet that would have unified the fan base sold us out to coach the Detroit Lions West. (Death to the 49ers.) No matter who is hired, some meaningful faction will be mad. Too bad Miles couldn't bring Hoke in as HC in waiting. That would be my vote.

But the fact Mullen did it before we had an opening might mean some leeway.

I'll never understand how something so perfect as Harbaugh coming back now didn't happen. I mean, I think he's kind of an ass, but frankly as downtrodden as our program is now, we don't need a goof like Miles, we need our Spurrier, our arrogant ass who just wins and gets the cocky back in the fanbase (Gruden might be able to do that too). Because when it's gotten so bad that you may prostitute yourself for some wins, the fanbase is shaken. He can be a dick to other coaches as long as he's good to his kids.

The problem with Miles-Hoke (beyond the demotion) is that after Miles is done, Hoke is basically the same age as Miles now. So you're doing it all over again. Might as well get a Hoke now with a Loeffler or Bedford on the staff to groom after him. (Another reason Gruden became appealing...didn't realize he's STILL so young).

Don't doubt Les's character.

I was actually chatting during tonight's game with someone who knows him personally.

I wouldn't say that he's a close personal friend, but he is someone Les might just put on a resume' as a reference if he was looking for a job like the rest of us and needed an actual resume'.

I'm not getting any more specific than that.

According to this individual, Les is a good, upstanding guy.

I add an apostrophe because I have no idea how to type the accented vernsion of "e" and I wanted to make an obvious distinction between resume (v) and resume' (n).

While making the first and last "e" accented is preferable, I've always thought an apostrophe after that first "e" makes it look even more silly.

re'sume'

resume'

Hoping that explanation satisfies your curiosity, I'll resume my morning internet reading...

So forgive me, I agree that the choice will be Les Miles but why is everybody so down on Brady Hoke? Here is a Guy that WANTS to coach at UM, and seems to be pretty ethical while doing what it takes to be a winner. Bo didn't have the most impressive resume either but we all know what he did.

I'm not saying they have the exact same resume but there were many folks holding up the "Bo Who" signs when Bo was named HC. Keep in mind I live in the cess pool that is Columbus Ohio and whether or not they admit it, they had the same reaction to Jim Tressel-everybody here wanted Glen Mason (and I wish they had gotten him). So like I said forgive me, it was my first post after over a year of membershipo but I wanted to throw my support to Brady Hoke.

Oh God, please, let's go back in time and curse Ohio with Glenn Mason...

You know, I really don't disagree that Hoke could be successful here. He just doesn't have the resume Bo had. Bo was 40-17-3 at Miami (Oh.). I know they are more of a power than Ball State, but still.

Other than my deep, delicious hatred for the 49ers, which has recently thundered out of me, I have been relatively OK with this search once I realized I could live with Hoke.

Is that Hoke wouldn't even be CONSIDERED for the UM coaching gig if he didn't coach at UM as an assistant in the past. If he coached anywhere else (say Iowa or Arizona) he wouldn't even be on long list. I'm sorry, but I'm not impressed by his resume and he would be a Michigan Man hire just for the sake of being a Michigan Man and nothing else...oh wait, he WANTS to coach Michigan! Well so do I, but that doesn't mean I should be the coach! A Brady Hoke hire would make me cry, and kittens would be mass murdered.

when you couldn't really get an idea of who was available or who was being interviewed (or not), so it was kind of like playing Farmville and getting that email alert. "Message from UM: Your coaching search is complete! Click here to find out who it is." (Except you couldn't click, because there was no email and no internets, blah blah blah. Think of it as a metaphor for something, maybe opening the next issue of The Sporting News.)

Now it's all right in front of you. I'm somewhat surprised there isn't an online page tracking all possible candidates and their current contract status, except that a) if it were at a site like ESPN, no one would believe it, because they're posting whatever they hear no matter what the source is (they must have the ombudsman locked in a closet or something), and b) if it were anywhere else, it'd probably take the site down. I'm half expecting to wake up one morning soon and find just two links on the home page, one that says "DONT KNOW YET" and another that leads to pictures of kittens.

This is like if you had job offers in NCAA's online dynasty (IIRC you don't), and you're at the end of the season, and someone has offers that he has to consider, and the commish won't skip anybody's turn, and everyone else is saying "GET ONLINE YOU IDIOT AND TAKE THE OFFER FROM MICHIGAN", and that one guy is off playing Perfect Dark Zero or something. Dude. Accept the offer so we can go from obsessing about who you are to obsessing about this year's record.

But can someone who does tell me whether my gut feeling that these guys sound like total assclowns who are just loving the fact that there's zero accountability in sports reporting? They can claim whatever they want, get the hits and exposure since the Les Miles story is very PLAUSIBLE and then just say "oopsie" when it goes away.

I mean, I've seen one denial that was actually plausible (actual players quoted by legit sources) as opposed to a completely anonymous pair of guys who are trying (and failing) to work their own phones.

In terms of morals and scrupples when it comes to getting the job done: RR >> Miles

In terms of success and how that translates to success @ UM: Miles > RR

I'm sorry, but I want to win again, and I want it to be against teams that matter. All in for Miles right now.

credibility of these guys as well. Honestly at this point, I leaning towards the notion that they are throwing crap on the wall and hoping it sticks. Not like they lose much by being wrong.

They're saying it's 80-90% likely. I would've given it 50-50 without any news either way. Les is without a doubt one of the two or three frontrunners. I think it's just an easy preduction to make. If it turns out that nothing happens, oopsie! 20% margin of error. If it does, they've scooped literally every news organizaion in the world. They get tons of credibility and sell tons of ads.

It sucks that I can't trust them becase I definitely want Miles.

TigerDroppings folks are cooling on the speculation now with all the players coming out. Some still believe that Les' choice words allow for him to claim he was contacted over the weekend and then leave on Monday or Tuesday. Wacky and tinfoil-hatty, but at this point, who really knows.
