Late Games OPEN THREAD
Is there such a thing as "Hawkeye No!"? Because I think that interception qualifies.
...seconds. NIU just kicked a FG to go up on Iowa after a terrible Iowa INT.
Iowa is a play or two away from being the prohibitive favorite for TWIS in a few days...
...and NIU's FG is good, 30-27 Huskies with 4 seconds to go.
Iowa and Indiana are trading places.
Man we are bad this year.
Well within the error bar.
And Iowa also lost to CMU last year.
Love the fact that Ferentz is making 3+ mil a year for the job he has done lately.
half of that is going to need to go to anti-depressants though
This is the fourth time Ferentz has lost to a MAC school. Two losses to Western, one to Central and now Northern Illinois.
Huskies were impressive though. That program has really turned around. Ten years ago, they were putting up 10 loss seasons.
From the other thread, thanks to Mr. Yost.
Wazzou up on Auburn early... hope that holds up.
Oregon is covering the 59-point spread, 66-3 over Nicholls St.
Eastern Washington leads #25 Oregon St. 29-17 just before half.
Herd show Monday or Tuesday will be more painful than usual if the Eastern Washington lead holds
Feels like Logan Thomas has been at VT forever....
I would've sworn Logan Thomas was on his way to being a first round pick. Sure he had flaws, but he was a sophomore with a lot of projection.
Now....he's a senior with a lot of projection. And generally speaking appears to be a worse quarterback.
What was the score of the Bama game last year at this point?
It was 31-7 at Halftime
Damn that hurts even now.
Thomas is 1 for his last 14 now? Ugh. Doesn't help when his receivers are dropping perfectly thrown deep passes, though. Alabama's O hasn't been that good tonight, two special teams TDs. All that departed talent on the O-line isn't easy to replace, even for them.
Oregon State is losing to FCS #4 Eastern Washington 29-17 at halftime.
And yay EMU! They're beating Howard right now and that game is on ESPN3.
LOL @ at the cheaters from UK losing to WKU right now.
Why are they cheaters again?
WKU where Petrino wound up?
- Cincinnati beats Purdue 42-7
- Illinois struggled against FCS Illinois State
- Iowa loses to Northern Illinois
- Minnesota struggled with UNLV and MSU struggles with WMU - both opponents are in the 90+ range
- and Indiana gave us 35 pts to FCS Indiana State
Even OSU gave up 20 to UB
Granted, the level of competition wasn't great, but IU scored 70+. With that many possessions in the game, giving up 35 isn't horrible (more than doubled them up anyway).
Also, MN won their game pretty handily after a shakey start. Purdue and Illinois are the new IU and Minnesota.
I think the B1G is going to be pretty interesting this year, and I like our chances.
Looking forward to seeing how Nebraska and Northwestern look tonight.
Ya, but Indiana scored a shitload. I wouldn't include them in this list
Man the big 10 conference sucks so much. No other conferences ever lose games to FCS opponents or struggle with mid majors!! This is embarrassing.
If it makes any difference the AAC or whatever suck too.
Yeah, I mean it's not like teams from the powerful SEC or all powerful Pac 12 ever get tested by FCS or mid majors (teams such as Kentucky, Mizzou, Texas A&M, Utah, and Oregon State). I forgot the unstoppable Big 12 juggernauts of West Virginia, Kansas State, and Trxas Tech too
Relax. Kansas State just loss to NDSU and Va Tech lost to James Madison a few years ago. I'm sick of all the Big Ten bashing. If you hate the conference so much go root for teams in others conferences.
I think you need to check your sarcasm meter.
Such is the case when you hook yourself to the flaming trainwreck that is Ron English. EMU is losing 24-13 to some guy named Howard Bison.
Damn don't those southern girls get dressed up for a football game. Mmm, mmm, mmm. Debutantes>>>>hipsters.
Holy hell what an eloborate stadium entrance for Clemson..
Agreed, traditions like that are part of what makes college football great. Never seen the Clemson entrance before.
I've seen the run from the rock forward but this was the first time they showed behind the scenes of how the players got there. It is a very impressive entrance - I think the Colorado one is also cool with the Buffalo running on the field. And Michigan of course. :)
That was cool. That's why I'm a CFB fan.
Stat of the minute - Alabama has managed to accumulate 168 yards of offense and they are only averaging about 3.6 yards per offensive play, yet they are up by 25. Virginia Tech has more yards and only 10 points to show for it.
Yeah I think Bama has a punt return TD, kick return TD and an interception return TD. I've been peeking in on their game and their O hasn't looked very good at all (mostly O line growing pains).
NEB goes down 7-0 to Wyoming.
Clemson sure knows how to make an entrance. I'll give them that.
I always like a dominant performance.
Feels like the old days. Michigan should stomp teams like this!
The defense was nice.
It felt like a lot of depth.
Is it ever really wrong to discuss Michigan football?
1st and Goal from the 3; 4:32 left in Q3.
Two pt conversion coming; 30-29.
32-29 beavers with 4:22 left in Q3.
Conversion fails; 36-32 EasternWA.
OreState 39-36 with 13:46 left in regulation.
Not a lot of defense being played in Corvallis, OR.
9:50 left; this one may come down to whomever scores last.
Time for me to leave for dinner.
Wyoming playing like a top 10 team right now. Nebraska seems a little taken aback by how much of a fight they're being handed.
Oh I just saw a Heisman commercial with Desmond and Barry Sanders in it. #Joy
I will be surprised if they get 33 from their offense. Maybe if their defense scores twice they'll hit 33.
UGA vs CLEM - don't turn the channel or blink.
Looking at that last touchdown.. I really wish Sammy Watkins had shown up in Ann Arbor
How close was UM to getting him? Or was it one of those "one of the top 10 contenders but not really" type of things. That kid might have a future in the sport.
My memory may be off but I thought it was a legit shot at him....of course we had Hart in the fold, were looking real good for Frost as well and Watkins had legit interest if I remember correctly.
Shot at him and Treadwell!
I liked how the players enter the stadium. Very cool. Watkins has another gear.
I dunno UGA...I might go for this one
UGA Clemson gonna be a shootout
Among the less watched games, Washington State is only down 4 to Auburn at halftime. As a matter of fact, It seems like Leach has begun the next stage of the implementation of the "Air Raid" at WSU, as 264 of the Cougars' 283 yards are passing yards.
The NEB blackshirts are for real
Wow. Nebraska continuing the B1G's trend of stuggling against a squad that was 4-8 a year ago.
Wyoming leads 14-10.
Wyoming up 14-10 on the Huskers.
This will be first time Coach English's team will come from behind to win after being behind after 3 quarters.
They ain't never scurred.
on EWU vs Oregon State?? 82 and counting...
ESPN going with country music as their intro/outro for commercials... What more can they do to promote their SEC boner??? Hire Honey Boo Boo's mother???
Nebraska is playing like they're still on summer vacation. Lucky to get that score, really.
Never bought Nebraska as Legends winner. Lost 8 starters off a crap defense, and they look like it. O-line hasn't looked too great either, from what I've seen. Martinez has been forced to scramble a lot.
Wyoming's center is turrrible.
Oregon State over Eastern Washington 46-43 with 3:10 left.
Game of the week?
Is it going to be another "the BIG ten blows" year? State looked bad. Ohio? Not super impressive. Purdue, yikes. Illinois and Iowa, weak. Now Nebraska looking like they're going to be in a game with a team they're favored to beat by 31. Lets are what northwestern does.
Looks like it'll be at least overtime on the Oregon State game.
Nope. East Wa takes the lead with 18 seconds left
Wyoming runs 25 seconds off the clock, then calls TO with 0:02 left.
And then they take a knee. *shakes head*
East Wa misses the xtra point! Still hope in Corvalis.
9 seconds left
OSU passes to the EAST WA 35!
Just like the Sugar Bowl a few years ago.
JUST TAKE THE 4 YARD LOSS!
Fake injury. 3 seconds left. Oregon State just made a huge catch.
FCS #4 Eastern Washington has #25 Oregon State on the ropes....
He got freaking whacked. I think that's real
3 secs left
OSU reciever is hurt still down and the 3 sec will let OSU to have enough time to spike the ball and and/or kick the FG in an attempt to tie
At halftime: Texas 14 - New Mexico State 7. Hmm...
That was a 43 point spread.
OSU MISSED THE FG
Oregon State will go for the 52yd game-tying FG with 1 second left. EWU leads 49-46....
NO GOOOD!!! THE FCS HAS DONE IT AGAIN!
We are no longer the only FBS team ranked in the Top 25 to lose to an FCS team... Today has been good
Umm....Virginia Tech was Top-15 when they lost to James Madison a few years ago. We haven't been the only team for a while
We haven't been for several years. JMU whacked Va Tech a few years back.
Thanks for the catch guys... Forgot VT was ranked when they lost to JMU
We will likely remain the only top-5 team to do so until such time as Clemson or South Carolina start the season in the top-5.
So to sum up the past three days-
- Towson humiliates UConn 33-18
- North Dakota State hands defending Big 12 champ K-State their first season opening loss since 1981, 24-21
- WVU escapes vs William & Mary, 24-17
- Illinois escapes the choke hall of fame with a 42-34 win over Southern Illinois
- Eastern Washington beats #25 Oregon State 49-46
- BC pulls ahead late to hold off Villanova 24-14
So much for these FCS games being cupcakes. Nobody is safe anymore and perhaps ADs should do their homework before they schedule FCS teams.
Because scheduling good ones is asking for an upset. They will already be taken lightly, so you better make sure they are a shitty FCS team.
Clemson coach working hard on killing Taj Boyd before halftime.
Alabama needs to get the O Line fixed. They have a week off before A&M.
Auburn is benefiting from some favorible non-calls on pass interference.
Georgia and Clemson is looking like the game of the week.
Not a bad opening weekend all in all.
Nebraska might have awakened after the half. Nice spin moves to get in for the TD.
fuming. Not sure about that call. Roughing the passer on a sack (supposedly because it was around the collar).
The Wyoming coach is an absolute dumbass. Why would you let the clock run out when you were at the 50 and had been running all over Nebraska in the first half (300 YARDS)?! They could've gotten 4 plays off and the idiots took a knee. Now Nebraska has the game in control.
Looks like those black shirts that were handed out this week were legit. About as legit as Iowa
Clemson D is walking all over Georgia right now. ESS EEE SEE!!!
UGA is a considerably more palatable option for SEC Champion than Alabama.
Northern Iowa 21, Iowa St. 17, 5:36 in the 3rd
Eastern Illinois 19, San Diego St. 16, 11:00 in the 3rd
3rd and 32....tough one, Georgia.
Oh, Leslie Edwin Miles...
Cal just made Northwestern look like fools on a fake FG TD...
LSU doing what LSU does in situations where time management matters...
Coulter just got concussed. Two plays in. Damn.
WKU going to beat SEC Kentucky. heh
2nd year in a row right?
Yes, but last year they won on a 2pt conversion in OT to win the game. This year WKU kicked their ass. That game is final now.
What is going on?
FCS McNeese State humiliates USF 53-21 in Tampa.....
Are we to the point that we need to integrate FBS and FCS like Division 1 basketball? These upsets are happening as if not more frequently.
Something I'm wondering about: do you think the playoff system is helping top-end FCS schools in recruiting? If I were a recruit at a level where my choices were a solid FCS school with a chance at a playoff run and a lower-echelon Sun Belt or MAC team where the best I could possibly hope for, even if everything came together and we ran off a near-perfect season, is a crappy bowl game...I'd be leaning toward the former.
Forced to choose between NDSU or Akron, where do you go?
I can see why LSU fans have such a love/hate relationship with him. Such talented teams but they do a ridiculous amount of stupid things.
Back at ya Cal. NW answers with a TD run.
Kolter rocked by Cal's D... Really curious if he's coming back in, he looked like his legs were gonna just give out. Possible concussion?
dang it looks like Cal holds a lot
Northwestern is going to be hell. I don't buy the people saying they are overrated.
is no joke. Their defense and passing game are pretty mediocre though. They should present a problem like they did last year, but Michigan is the better overall team.
If you're watching Clemson-Georiga...that's what we need to do next week. 12th man helps.
Over at the Clemson-Georgia game, we're coming up on the 700-yard mark for total offense between these teams. Neither team has been terribly successful on third down, yet both are 100% on fourth down conversions. Defensive showcase indeed.
Clemson stalls out in Georgia territory and goes for the FG, which is good. They take a very likely temporary 31-28 lead with about half of the third quarter in the books now. Of note, all four of UGA's TDs are rushing TDs. Aaron Murray has no scores to show for 201 yards of passing.
Wyoming coaches dress like UPS drivers. That is all.
NW got hosed on that grounding call. #84 wasn't near by
And that botched snap is why you spend a scholarship on a long snapper. Could cost them a shot at the bcs
Georgia vs Clemson game as an FYI (don't know how to edit my post on iPhone so the reply to self)
Didn't help MSU.
UNI scores again, leads Iowa St. by 8.
Eastern scores again, leads SDSU by 14.
Some Blackshirt defense right there.....
UNI is about to beat Iowa St
E Illinois is up on SDSU 33-19
UNI fumbled at the ISU 1-yard line with 1:44 left. ISU still alive
Northern fumbles at the State 1, State recovers. They have life but they need to go 99 yards in a minute.
Never mind. State fails on 4th at their own 23, game over.
Is Colter out for the game or are they still unsure?
That makes 5 FCS-over-FBS wins now I think
- Towson over UConn
- NDSU over KState
- E Washington over Oregon State
- McNeese St over USF
- Northern Iowa over Iowa State
Probably will be Eastern Illinois over SDSU - 20 pt lead under 5 remaining
Unstoppable throw-god Trevor Simien putting NW on top 14-7
ETA: He's 10/11, 98 yds
Touchdown Wyoming......It's 37-34 Nebraska.....BIG TENNNN!
Bo looks like he's ready to murder Papuchis
Remindes me of Michigan's defense not so long ago.
Herbie discussing faking injuries as a way to slow down uptempo offenses. "I'm not saying that's happening here..."
He and Musberger are actually not annoying me tonight.
Nebraska are you kidding me? You run out of bounds up 3 with 1:20 left?
Go Pokes! Live from Laramie and I'm extremely proud of Wyoming's effort tonight!
They have over 500 yards of offense. Incredible.
Funny that someone with the handle "MGoClimb" would respond. Ever been to Vedauwoo out here? It's about 20 minutes East of Laramie here and an incredible place to climb. The area has great climbing, hiking, and mountain biking.
That said, I love Michigan, but Wyoming is a relatively close second. I love the country out this way, and it's university (Wyoming only has one university).
I have not been to Vedauwoo, but I have passed through Laramie, although it's been a number of years and I honestly do not remember much. I just did a little research on Vedauwoo and it looks like fun. If my travels take me back to that area it looks like a good place to add to the list. Thanks!
Ohhhh boy. That was close to a hold.
You'd think maybe there must have been some lucky bounces but none of it's been against the run of play at all.
Northern had a back run for 199,outgained State by 50 yards, had five sacks to State's zero and won the game despite losing the TO battle 2-0.
Eastern Washington outgained OSU by 100 yards, Towson did the same to UConn. NDSU's QB didn't throw an incompletion in the second half. McNeese got some turnovers but they also outgained their FBS opponent by 60.
I don't have stats on the Eastern Illinois game but they're now up by three scores so we'll assume that's not a fluke either.
Michigan and NW for the divison. Nebraska's defense looks awful, not suprising considering it wasn't a good defense last year, and lost several key players.
Like Michigan's chances even more after seeing the rest of the conference.
Dats some bullshit there. 3 Neb players leveled the receiver before the ball was even halfway there. No PI
It's nice to see the officials still like to help Nebraska out. They basically handed them the division title last year.
You had your team run out the clock at halftime with 3 timesouts at the 50...you are a DUMBASS.
Be afraid, Corn Nation. Be very afraid.
If I'm Bo (and I'm so glad I'm not), I am making those D-linemen run at 5 am all next week. They were just standing around on that last play.
nebraska is going to need a hell of a lot more than refs to help them at The Big House in November. I think Michigan is going to beat them like they did in 2011- but even worse.
nebraska had somewhat of a defense in 2011. They just gave up 34 points to wyoming.
In all fairness (and this doesn't mean much), Dave Christensen was the offensive coordinator for Gary Pinkel at Mizzou for a long time. He knows how to move the ball, and I knew that Wyoming was going to easily beat the spread tonight. I never expected a 3 point game, but Wyoming isn't an absolute nothing, and you mix that with a bit of hate (Wyoming folk do not like the state of Nebraska), and you have a 14 point decifit at best. The rest is on Nebraska. Clearly, things look about as good as they can after one week for Michigan in the matchup against Nebraska.
Did anybody just hear Brent Musberger say LSU appears to be headed for a win when there's 17 minutes left? Is he senile?
Yes. Yes he is.
Clemson knocks off UGA 38-35
Did Clemson fans start any obnoxious conference chants or did they just cheer for their team like normal people?
Who is cal'a coach now?
No whistle, the play is still alive.
I guess if your head touches the turf you're down.....
The guys shoulder hit the ground. I always love those ridiculous plays.
ACC ACC ACC
Am I the only one not that worried about NW? Their offense can give anyone trouble but their defense has been putrid forever and doesn't look to get better anytime soon.
Against a true freshman qb and new coach/offense that can't exploit them.
measuring stick. Northwestern defense is at least mediocre though, not any better than that though. Their running game is the only above average part of their team, though it is good enough to have your hands full defensively.
TCU and their ludicrous helmets still in this one
Well it is safe to say the era of parity is here in CFB. While I hate to mention the game that shall not be mentioned here, in a way that event sort of kicked it off. Now FCS teams are pulling off upsets in many places. McNeese State smashed Sparty's next opponent by the largest margin (they believe) every by a FCS team over a non FCS. And at least 4 (5?) other such upsets this weekend. Hell, Youngstown State might beat MSU in 2 weeks to add to it :P.
Unrelated re: Nebraska - the defense lost 7 starters over a fraud defense last year, I dont know if they play Indiana but that game would be 65-60 ...without OTs. UM and OSU are clearly the only 2 balanced teams in the conf - some of these teams have a lot of offense and some the defense but almost no one has any sort of balance. And yes the Big 10 really sucks...again.
Washington pushing around Boise.
Boise State is going down to Washington. This is good - Boise is actually #3 all-time in winning percentage, if you can believe that. They're getting too close to us in those rankings.
Who could have guessed that
is that lopsided, but I expected Washington to win that game. Boise lost most of their playmakers on defense, and Washington has started to amass some good talent.
Kain Colter out. "Throw God" and notes MGoBlog enemy Trevor Simien takes over.
Siemian looks good... NW is #2 in the B1G ... relatively at this point.
Michigan and ohio are 1&2 at this point.
defense is still mediocre at best. NW 's run defense is ok, but their pass defense was awful last year, and doesn't look any better tonight. Though, I guess OSU's defense wasn't impressive either, giving up 20 in their game. Still the favorites in the Big Ten at this point would clearly be Michigan and OSU. Every other team has weak link on one side of the ball.
I don't think they look that good. I think the only teams in the big ten that looked good all around today were michigan and Ohio state. Northwestern seems overrated. I'm sure they will have a good season but people have been talking them up a little too mich
Those true frosh QBs installing Air Raid offenses'll get ya.
Cal finally connects on one of those wide open deep passes that have been there all night
NW doing their best to throw the game right now. BIG TENNNN!
Washington is destroying Boise. So long season ... Boise. Washington is looking good.
You've gotta be kidding me, 'Cats.
At least you aren't screwing up against the MAC.
Same NW problem as always . . . defensive backs.
Someone teach that freshman the meaning of 'in front, and inside'
as Michigan wins theirs, and it happens to take place in California. Think it is pretty inevitable that Michigan and OSU will most likely be the only great teams in the Big Ten moving forward, while the rest of the conference is stuck in mediocrity or worse. Hurts strength of schedule, but that seems to be the reality.
BIG TEHNNN... Is tied for the best out of conference showing thus far in the season in terms of losses and embarrassment factor with the PAC 12. If the cats hold on to win, the Big 10 would have the least embarrassing first week of all AQ conferences albeit without as many dominating performances.
we lost to the MAC. Twice.
No, one of our craptastic teams lost to NIU who went 11-2 last year and has an improved Jordan Lynch who was one of the better quarterbacks in the nation. The other craptastic team in the league lost to a former Big East team. Meanwhile the SEC is over there losing to Western Kentucky and getting severely tested by Rice. What's your point?
Half of the starting D for aTm was suspended for that game bro, and KY is awful. What's your point?
Kentucky is awful but Purdue isn't?? The Big 10 isn't allowed to have any awful teams? If Michigans top players on D and with Morris at Q we would still have smashed Central. Keep in mind that CMU beat WKU in their bowl last season. Looks like you're getting your opinions from the WWL and not actually watching the games. Bro.
KY appeared to score.....26 points against their opponent, as opposed to Purdue, who scored....7 points. Advantage: SEC.
If Michigans top players on D and with Morris at Q we would still have smashed Central
This isn't a sentence. Try harder next time, or there will be an elbow drop in your future.
Alright. You can criticize me for grammar because I'm drunk and sleeping. But I simply cannot accept the fact that you continue to apologize for other conferences' piss poor play and take the two worst teams in the Big 10 who played fairly strong opponents (Cincinnati and NIU >> WKU) as examples of the whole conference's struggles. Sounds like typical Jesse Palmer analysis right there.
NWU is in trouble - the left coast is never kind to the B1G
Good. Hope they're really unkind to Ohio State.
Nice job by the dline there
And just like that, they're back in it. Pick 6 puts them up 27-24
Big pick 6 for the cats!
Hell yes... NU is not to be taken lightly. They are tackling well to boot. Get the safety in line and things are looking good. Go Cats.
You are clearly faking them injuries.
Very entertaining game
That was a clean hit. His head was up and drove through the QB.
else is the defender supposed to hit him? Do they want defenders lowering their heads top up and risk injuring themselves? That hit was facemask to facemask. I guess it is only about the safety of the offensive player though, who cares if the defender injures himself by making an awkward hit to avoid a penalty.
I just watched that hit in slowmo five time and have no idea why that is an ejection? His head is up and he hits the guy in the shoulder!
That hit looked fine to me, this rule is definitely going to piss a lot of people off with wrongful ejections.
happen to several teams this year, if that ruling is the standard. Demens hit to end the game against NW last year most likely would of been a penalty under that standard, which is downright ridiculous as it was a textbook hit.
The Cal ejection on the NW QB hit, sucks. Great play, TERRIBLE rule.
of see what you hit doesn't apply anymore. The NCAA and NFL are so concerned about the safety of the offensive player, that they don't realize the danger in defensive players going out of their way to avoid any contact at the shoulders or above. Good recipe to get a defensive player paralized by not leading with the head up.
That and guys are going to start going low and blowing up the ball carriers knees. I have seen a few good ejections with the new rule but I think we are going to see just as many or more that leave us shaking our heads.
Why isn't the NW DB ejected here?
to review it, not sure they even looked at in slow-mo.
Pretty sure Northwestern is faking some injuries here.
lol poor play calling / decisions by both teams.
Yes... this will be a great indicator game when OSU plays Cal. Cats rule... with 2nd string QB all game. Awesome.
I am starting to have hate for the cards of louisville (obvious reasons).
But, after reading a Hype story about how great Teddy Bridgewater is and how he is Heisman favorite, I looked into their schedule and was grossed out by how easy their road to an undefeaated season will be. Their out of conference games are huge joke. And their in conference games -- every team is bad.
So, will the BCS and Heisman committee discount their soft schedule because I would put a 1 loss B1G team or 2 Loss SEC team ahead by the end of the year.
LOUISVILLE = POOEYVILLE -- yeah i said it.
