Did anyone see the horrible rule in football during the nebraska game? Dude fumbled a backwards pass out of bounds on a 4th and 1. The ball was fumbled out of bounds ahead of him, past the first down marker, and the rule says first down to Passing Team.
October 22nd, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
Yeah, correct call, terrible rule. Let's install a play where we have the QB pitch it back and the RB bats it forward and out of bounds for 30 yards.

I'm not solid on my college FB rules, but I think in the high school game this is considered "illegal batting" and is a loss of down penalty. I didn't see the play in question, but I'm 99% sure that there are rules covering this situation. I'm assuming this was a legit fumble and not really a "bat."Yeah, correct call, terrible rule. Let's install a play where we have the QB pitch it back and the RB bats it forward and out of bounds for 30 yards.

Gotcha, I've never heard of that rule before. In this play it was a backwards pitch/pass that the rb started to bring in and redirected forward out of bounds.
October 22nd, 2011 at 5:17 PM ^
Illegal batting is a 10 yard penalty, but I think it has to be intentional. I went through the rules and found that because I thought that once the player touch it it was ruled a fumble.

But didn't Butch Woolfolk do something like that against Indiana in '79? I think it was the play right before AC took it to the house and he did it to stop the clock.
October 22nd, 2011 at 5:00 PM ^
I believe they changed the rules after the 1979 season because of that play.
October 22nd, 2011 at 5:02 PM ^
I was at the game and it transpired as you indicated. It was a bit of a fake trip followed by an underhanded heave to the nearest sideline to stop the clock. Corso was livid but the refs allowed it and the AC TD happened next, along with the correspondingly awesome Ufer call.
October 22nd, 2011 at 5:38 PM ^
Yeah I thought it was something funny like that. Terrible call or not AC gets that TD regardless of field position.
October 22nd, 2011 at 7:15 PM ^
It wasn't a terrible call. At the time that play was legal, it was only after that play that they changed the rule to make intentional out-of-bounds laterals illegal

officiating crew that was up in EL last weekend. They would have ruled that an incompletion
#mygrapesAREsourthankyou
October 22nd, 2011 at 4:26 PM ^
I was thinking the EL crew might say "ineligible receiver downfield" on the same play.
October 22nd, 2011 at 4:58 PM ^
might say "We hate Michigan because we couldn't get in so we had to go to MSU. We also suck at our jobs. What's a backward pass?"
October 22nd, 2011 at 5:56 PM ^
that is an incomplete foward pass !
Go Blue!

Watching Nebraska-Minnesota. Gopher fans really need something to cheer for other than senseless slaughter.
October 22nd, 2011 at 4:21 PM ^
Minnesota's woes have allowed me to avoid excessive ribbing over the past week.

That was quite the hard hitting reporting from Tracy Wolfson there, talking about how much Lutzenkirchen of Auburn loves Disney and his Halloween costumes.

LSU is so deep in that defensive backfield. I promise you every one in that the 2 deep or even 3 deep could start just about any where in the country. Morris Claiborne is a beast. By far their best pure cover man at CB.
October 22nd, 2011 at 4:32 PM ^
Martinez has no idea how to run the option.
October 22nd, 2011 at 4:33 PM ^
Oregon looking explosive as always, despite their stuggles against SEC elite I still think they're one of the beat teams in the country. Would love to see them play Oklahoma State or Arkansas
October 22nd, 2011 at 4:36 PM ^
GT muffs a punt in a crowd, it rolls into the endzone, and Miami jumps on it. 14-0 Miami.
GT just keeps finding ways to shoot itself in the foot. Two weeks in a row.
October 22nd, 2011 at 4:39 PM ^
Oh, Minnesota.

Verne Lundquist's face makes my balls hurt. Gross.

Just turned on the LSU game. What's with the strange purple and gold look? Leftover gold from the MSU unis?
October 22nd, 2011 at 5:01 PM ^
Those are the Pro Combat jerseys for LSU this year. Not terrible, but I think the purple collar looks dumb.
October 22nd, 2011 at 4:53 PM ^
LSU has one of the best looking fields in football. The numbering is unique, end zones are bold but clean looking, and the tiger eye in the middle of the field is downright badass. That thing is on grass too, so it's done weekly.
October 22nd, 2011 at 5:05 PM ^
I thought the numbers looked odd. Guess im not crazy.
October 22nd, 2011 at 5:51 PM ^
They use the smaller size because they number every 5 instead of every 10 yards.
October 22nd, 2011 at 5:18 PM ^
Sammy Watson is a very good receiver.
October 22nd, 2011 at 5:22 PM ^
Not a lot of great day games today...
October 22nd, 2011 at 5:27 PM ^
....not that Martinez needs every down right now. He could burn a few.

I hope nobody's watching the UVA game. Nine punts in the third quarter.
October 22nd, 2011 at 6:16 PM ^
Here come the Falcons....
Air Force is only a touchdown back of Boise State (versus).
October 22nd, 2011 at 6:22 PM ^
LSU is really, really good.
October 22nd, 2011 at 6:31 PM ^
October 22nd, 2011 at 6:31 PM ^
I'd take LSU over any team in the country right now. Wow.
October 22nd, 2011 at 6:37 PM ^
...as mykids wanted a "Spongebob Break". I see that Minnesota got into the end zone yet again. 41-14 final. That makes 31 points in three games of conference play.
October 22nd, 2011 at 7:12 PM ^
Minnesota won the second half and gives them something to build on. It also ended my SFTC run at 12 in a row.
October 22nd, 2011 at 6:46 PM ^
God I hate beating this dead horse, but the announcers in the Miami game just discussed what Golden told them re: suspending his player for the punch. "I've never been more livid. That's just cowardly. If that was 2 or 3 years down the road when we had established our culture and values here, I don't think Regis (the player) would be in the program anymore."
Contrast that with Dantonio. Ridiculous.
October 22nd, 2011 at 6:42 PM ^
This is kind of off topic but I was wondering What college football team plays the most man up coverage?
