The Last Three Years, a few observations

Submitted by lexus larry on

With the close of the RichRod era within Michigan Football, it's interesting to note quite a few tidbits of his tenure, as well as the Machiavellian machinations that seemed to occur a little too frequently:

The entire LC faction within the athletic department seemed to have taken quite an offense to RR being named HC, to the point where it seemed the entire department should have been purged of LC hold-outs, and not just the football org.  The CARA leaks, lack of support from LC for 3 years (while within an hour of the announcement, LC calls the Hoke hiring "tremendous"), it's amazing Rich didn't lash out, or cry to any media source whatsoever.  Of course, that arbiter of actual capability and quality, the NFL, seemed to have a different view of Michigan assistant coaches and talent over the past 6 years.

I was struck by the near political machine operation (choose blue or red, I don't care) where the "Hoke element" played up his viability, and whispered it to the local ink-stained wretches, for them to place with an authoritative stamp of approval into their dying rags.  Surely they all didn't come to the same conclusion about his superiority independently, did they?

The farce of the NATIONAL COACHING SEARCH (n=1).   BS to the max, as posted ad infinitum.

Did the players really all jump for joy at the Hoke announcement?  Didn't realize college football players kept such close tabs on coaches in the MWC.  Hearing rabblerabble about "getting back to Michigan defense," what Michigan team do these kids know?  They should only know 2006...and that most of the aughts were pretty meh defensively, by scheme or by talent, it doesn't matter.

How about all those assistant coaches of Rich's?  I don't know how much dialing around he had to do to find them a home.  And most, if not all, are already hired.  How's that for a coaching tree?

Finailly, Rich will get a job next year, and you know what?  No AD will question how things went so poorly at U-M.  They'll be able to see it for themselves, in print, in text, in tweets, and all the innuendo and intrigue that prevented an agent of change from doing what he was hired to do. (Imagine any other professional organization that fought back so hard against the change that needed to be made, and won.  The other posts about the electric car bring GM to mind, but even drones at GM know to play along to what the big boss says, or find work elsewhere.)

(As an aside, as my brother and I were going back and forth on the firing, I told him, as I tell you now...RR will win an NC before U-M does.  That's paraphrased, I said "...before Harbaugh does."  Mark these words.)

When RR was hired we had an influx of talent and interest from recruits.

When Brady hoke was hired we had this (from Ray Hamilton Iowa TE recruit): Who?

From Blake Countess and his family: "While we are happy Michigan has found a head coach we have to learn more about Brady Hoke before soildifying our commitment."

It isn't Brady Hokes fault. I realize that. The fact is this was a completely underwhelming hire made off the assumptions that "he knows the rivalry" and "he knows Michigan football." To which I say; on what planet does that make you a competent coaching hire? Hell, I know about the rivalry, I know Michigan football. These talking points made to supposedly sell us on this hire are as underwhelming as the hire itself. Good luck to the man, but this looks a lot like an AD in way over his head settling for an old standby. What scares me the most is Hoke isn't even bringing in the old guard (Loeffler, Tedford, Soup, etc.). He is bringing in his coaching staff from the machine that is the 9-3 SDSU football program...

In all honesty (and this may sound horrible) but "overlooked players with heart" go to MAC schools. Carr, until the last few years, still recruited very great talent to UofM. If we have to rely on the genius of Brady Hoke recruiting all "guys with heart" then we are fucked.

Vinopal has heart.

Kovacs has heart.

Bless them, but that heart didn't stop them from getting tossed around by OSU.

LC giving his support to one of his assistants being hired is not at all unusual.

I definitely agree with the statements about the LC faction at the AD. Put simply, RR was brought into do a "culture change" with a lot of people who didn't really think a culture change was necessary. Both sides were exceedingly stubborn.

Re: Hoke. Whatever. Hopefully we'll win 9 games next year. I'm not as worried about thas I am about...I dunno, the rest of the years. Especially when he isn't playing with Rich's guys anymore. I don't believe that Michigan recruits itself. I think we had a string of really excellent coaches here that recruited for Michigan, Rich Rodriguez included, and from what I've seen with the current track record the jury is most definitely out if that has continued.

The "Michigan recruits itself" is almost as worn out as the "EVERY CORCH IN AMERICA WANTS TO COME HERE!"  (Including J. Leman and Ricky Stanzi, God Bless 'Em!)

That's one thing, I think that RR and Magee found, yeah, the U-M name opens the door, but "helmets got wings" and 120 years of tradition don't make the sale instantaneous or easier.

Much like a Michigan degree...gets you the interview, doesn't get you the job.

To put it plainly, and at the risk of stating the obvious, I think Rodriguez is partly responsible for what went down the last three years.  Playing a mediocre hand of cards clumsily, etc. ...

Still, the Hoke-amania of the last couple of weeks has been stunning.  How many posters with new accounts sprang up and sung his praises?  More than I can count, anyway ... I wonder how many interns Brandon has?  Could any other fan base at a school of Michigan's stature get this excited about a coach of Hoke's stature?  I wonder ...

Anyway, Hoke seems like a good guy, so that should count for something.  So, too, should the enthusiasm of the players (assuming it wasn't feigned).

...doesn't tickle me at all. Why will he win a NC? What scientific and undeniable facts do you have that lead you to overwhelming conclusion that he will win a NC? Will he go to a school like South Florida and win a Big East Championship then somehow pull out a miracle against an SEC school to secure a 13-0 season? I really want to hear this....

...factions in the UM department have to do with preparing for a game or making adjustments at half-time or formulating a defense etc etc etc? One thing has absolutely nothing to do with the other. You can't say that UM getting smacked around by the big boys of the B10 has anything to do with LC didn't put a stamp of approval on the new hire.
