Last Chance to Looks Stupid: Half Way Through the Season

Submitted by joeyb on

Just like the preseason thread (Don't look at it before you post):

http://mgoblog.com/mgoboard/last-chance-looks-stupid-season-record

Post only W/L for what you think our final record will be this season. Your numbers should add up to 12 or 13 (requires W>=6). Bowl W/L isn't a huge deal. We don't know who we would play. If you mark bowl win/loss, that shouldn't count against you.

After you have posted, I suggest you look at your preseason guess and either laugh at it or pat yourself on the back.

I didn't post it here, but I've been right so far soooo

DSU- W
PSU- L
Illinois- W
Purdue- W
Wisconsin- L
OSU- L

Season Final: 7-5

I went to the Wisconsin OSU game over the weekend, and Wisconsin's inability to finish a game, and our ability to finish a game/really turn it on at the end has made me feel a lot better about the game. OSU will be interesting because their offense is well... bad.

I would say our best upset chances are either wisconsin or PSU, more likely Wisconsin.

I remember my preseason prediction had 7-5 in the regular season with a bowl victory, making 8-5.

I will increase my regular season total by 1, giving us 8-4. And what the hell, let's win a bowl game.

Final answer: 9-4

Beat DSU, Illinois, Purdue, and one of Wisconsin or Penn State. Lose to the other of Wisc/PSU fall to Ohio State.

I was in a manic moment-positive side-the day I prognosticated and I had us going undefeated. My thoughts on the schedule have changed; PSU and the Illini seem a little more vulnerable than I anticipated while Wisky a little better. Oh, I'm starting to feel manic again-wait for it- I SAY WE ROLL, WOO!!!

DSU- W
PSU- W
Illinois- W
Purdue- W
Wisconsin- W
OSU- W

but if we do lose one, I'm thinking Wisconsin; two, Wisky and Illinois. We can't lose to OSU again, we simply cannot...NO!

I think we go 7-5 with a nice upset win and a nice upset loss. I think we end up picking off one of PSU, Wiscy, or OSU, and I think we end up gacking one away against either Purdue or Illinois.

Also, RRod then shows that he is a true Michigan Man by losing our bowl game.

DSU = W
PSU = L
at Illinois = W
Purdue = L (the obligatory season "bad loss". Yes, it's coming. After a road win. Hey, it's all about MY chance to look stupid, K?)
at Wisconsin = L
OSU = L

Bowl game = W

Season Final: 7-6

I'm just going to say, for whatever reason, we go undefeated at home this year, with one more loss coming @ Wisky. So:

DSU - W
PSU - W
@ Ill - W
Purdue - W
@ UW - L
OSU - W

I say we can surprise PSU, can't stop the run against Wisky, and pull off a thrilling OT win at home against the Suckeyes.

9-3

Wins against Del St and Purdue. Close, in some cases agonizingly so, losses to everybody else. This is partially based on Tate's not being really healthy the remainder of the season. Denard will perform admirably considering the circumstances, but he's still a freshman with a very incomplete mastery of the playbook. Our defense will play well for the most part and will keep us in games, but will keep giving up huge chunk plays like they've done all season long. Giving up 3rd-and-long conversions will continue to haunt us in particular.

the manifold and plentiful shortcomings of this team on offense and defense, not to mention CATCH THE FREAKING PUNT, and for the most part there's acceptance of the state of the team as Brian describes it. It's a truly mixed bag of great, good, meh, not-so-good, and horrible, any of which seem to pop up randomly. Which is exactly the mark of such a young team with little quality depth still learning the offensive and defensive schemes. Yet here we have the large majority of people predicting 8 and 9 wins with utter confidence unclouded, apparently, by any real doubt.

I call it irrational exuberance, to quote Alan Greenspan.

And you bet I hope I'm wrong. I would hate to depend on bowl selection committees if we're 6-6. Sure, 7-5 is easily possible, since beating Purdue and Illinois don't seem to be gargantuan tasks right now. But assuming victory in a road game for this team is a risky proposition, especially if we have to depend on Denard for long stretches.

And guaranteed a win at Sparty.

So I'll have to go 7-5 now because I sense destruction at the hands of Penn State, Ohio State, and a loss at Wisconsin. I'm thinking Tate won't finish the season due to injury.

We need Tate to be healthy--but like King Beaver at Scout, I don't think it is likely.

i'm still sticking with 8-4 (wins against DSU, Purdue, Illinois, Wisconsin) maybe even 9-3 if we do indeed still own penn state. then i havent even thought about a bowl win yet. dont want to count my chickens before they hatch

Having watched this team play 6 games I have to say I am at a total loss. I look at the schedule, and having seen all our upcoming opponents play and look quite vulnerable, I don't know what to think.

We have looked great on offence at times and very average at others. We have looked very good on defence at times and down right horrible at others. Neither side of the ball seems to have the best moments during the same games, but if they got that straightened out and actually started playing consistently well for the remainder of the season I don't see a reason any of our remaining games would be a definite loss.

Having said that, with the youth on this team and the chance that Forcier will be out from time to time the chances of us putting it all together are slim.

I guess if there is a way for me to look stupid I will have to jump at the chance....I say we finish 8-4 and get a bowl win to take our total to 9-4. With the way we have played we could just as easily end up 5-7 but I am chosing to be optimistic and hope that our guys get on the same page from here on out.

I think we beat Del. St., Illinios, Ohio St. and Penn State. We lose to Purdue and Wisconsin. I think all these games will be close with us having a chance to win at the end of the games (other than Del. St. that should be a blow out).

All of these predictions are possible.....lets hope for the best!

9-3

Beat: DS, Illinois, Purdue, Penn St., plus either Wiscy or OSU, don't think we win both.

I'll be honest part of me really, really wants to say we run the table. I think every game we have left is winnable... and by winnable I don't just mean theoretically possible, I mean there's a real case to be made for us and we got a legit shot of winning.

I'm just not sold on PSU, plus we have them at home *after* DS... I think we win.

As for Wiscy... Just don't think they're that great.

As for OSU, we have them at home, they're having a down year, poor offense, and we're overdue.

As for the rest, I just think we get it done against the teams we're supposed to. This team is hungry.

(I *think* I called 7-5 in the beginning of the year thread... If we finish 8-4, which is probably more realistic than what I predicted above, I'd actually be right, by the average.)

Exactly what do people see that the general consensus seems to be that we win vs Penn State? Please go beyond Iowa game comparisons--as they seem to own the Nittany Lions as much as we once did.

But really--if the thought process is just that "I don't think Penn State is that good"--well, not many thought Iowa or MSU was "that good"--yet they beat Michigan.

I think an upset is possible, but face it, they had one bad game against Iowa and have thrashed everybody else on their schedule and are a veteran team with plenty of talent.

Where do we get points? Where does our defense stop them?

We would have thrashed Iowa had it not been ND 2008 v2.0. PSU has a hard time running the ball against a good defense and I don't think Darryl Clark is going to light up our secondary. I think Minor is going to show them how to Rage again and Tate will play as well as he did in the first two games of the season.

my 2 pennies

DSU - win (duh)

PSU - win! This is realistically a toss-up, but with Minor back and I'm assuming a rested and ready Forcier, I'm liking our chances. We *might* have Molk back, too.

@Illinois - win. I watched MSU vs Illinois, and wow. What happened to Juice Williams? He was inaccurate in his throws, and didn't seem to be the runner he was. Illinois is not good.

Purdue - win. They (Purdue) keep finding a way to lose. They'll find a way against UM.

@Wisconsin - loss. After watching Wiscy vs OSU I think Wiscy is one of the better teams in the Big10. They beat themselves against OSU, throwing 2 pick-sixes.

OSU - sigh.... loss. They're still very very good, and barring an unexpected Biakabutuka-esqe explosion of 300+ yards rushing from Minor I think we'll lose this one.

So... 8-4.
