Lalota in the 2-deep?

Submitted by the BLUE north… on

The OCD in me wants to edit the 2-deep to put Lalota in there, alas I have not but 50 points and am unable to do so. So I was hoping someone could cure this weird twitch my eye has.

Also, with Black looking like a stud, does Lalota even beat him out?

Lalota was a 4* if memory serves me correctly and looked pretty good in the Spring Game. Black will still need to take a year to bulk up and work on his technique, most likely. He might beat out Lalota on the two-deep next year, but I would bet that Lalota gets a good amount of play time this year.

Jibreel Black is currently listed at 6'2", and 260 pounds.

Brandon Graham played the past two years at 6'2", 260 pounds.

As Black is going to be a defensive end, I see no reason why he needs a year to bulk up if his measurables are correct (and yes I know LaLota came in too light in comparison to his "measurables' - that has nothing to do with Black).

Black was told by GERG earlier this year to be ready to play from day 1. If he is, and I realize the qualifiers inherent in that statement, I would expect the defensive MVP from an Ohio All-Star game to get significant playing time as a pass rushing specialist in 2010.

I still expect LaLota to get 5-10 plays a game this year as well, including signficant time in the UMass game, as seasoning. The D-line is very deep.

Yeah, but we are running a different defensive scheme next year. The 3-3-5 stack doesn't really have a DE position like Brandon Graham played this year. The DEs are going to be more like 4-3 DTs. At Black's current size he would be slightly undersized as a 3-3-5 DE compared to Martin and RVB.

I'm a little concerned if the "new" defense (which I saw quite a bit of last year) doesn't have a place for an edge rushing defensive end.

I understand the idea might be to have Martin - Campbell - Van Bergen as the 3 in the line. However, on a pure passing down I don't get why you couldn't take one of these dudes out and put Black in to rush opposite Roh.

I don't think it's too wise to make definitive statements about who is going to be in, and who won't. The idea with having about 8-9 different guys that can play defensive line this year, is to toy with multiple fronts and multiple options. So, I do think there is a time and a place for Black this fall. Say, when it's 3rd and 8 or more and Michael Adams is gassed in the 3rd quarter.

but I think the OP could have used the term strengthen up rather than bulk up.  Not many high schoolers come in with the muscle tone and definition even though they may have the weight.  I don't know maybe he is a freak and can lift the same weight that Graham could last year but I doubt it.  Being the same physical size as Graham doesn't mean he has the physical strength as Graham.

Edit - I didn't read the comment right below mine, which says the same thing.  Neg away.

From what I understand of the 3-3-5 is that the pressure is designed to come from the places other than the defensive line. Such as the OLB (Roh), one of the two middle linebackers (Mouton/Ezeh) or one of the "box safeties(Kovacs/T. Gordon) blitzing on the edge. Generally the defensive line is more like two defensive tackles and a nose tackle that is used to help stop the interior run and generally pick up blockers to allow the speedier and smaller defenders to get into the backfield. The pass rushers are generally put at outside linebacker like Craig Roh.

I do believe we will get into four man fronts when it's called for and in that situation our pass rushing defensive ends will get more play.

Is not Brandon Graham. Hopefully at some point we can at least compare him to half of what BG was, but it's just too early to do that. Regardless of size and physical measurables, theres not alot of guys that have measured up to the relentlessness of 55. And I don't think anyone has mentioned this on here before (I may be wrong), but what are the chances that that number gets retired or gets reserved for a top defensive talent like the number 1 jersey on offense?

No one knows it's all a guess...look  back to May last year.

Turner lock to play= fail

Roh too small won't play=fail

No depth on DL Campbell to start/play a bunch=fail

Vlad enrolled early safeties terrible he'll play=fail

The odds favor Lalota so I changed it..we'll see in Sep.

There's a lot of places where guys who aren't on campus yet are at the bottom of depth chart even though we expect them to play this year.  I.e. Demar Dorsey and Cullen Christian, who are guys we .  The two-deep is adjustable so they will adjust it as people move.  Right now when the players are unknown quantities then the edge goes to age and years on campus.

The one thing I noticed was Cam Gordon still listed as WR  on the roster.  He switched to safety.

I understand that the 2 deep is adjustable, but what reason do we have to think Lalota is in it?

on the DL would consist of: Van Bergen, Campbell, Martin, Patterson, Banks and Sagesse. Did La Lota play with the 2nd string DL in the spring game?

It might make sense that since they moved Roh to the Sam LB spot, they might do the same eventually with LaLota. This would mean he still might make the 2-deep, but it would be at a different position. If Black is already 260 as a true frosh, he could easily bulk up and become a 5 technique or a nose.... There are so many things Barwis can do to change the physical makup of these guys it seems like the sky's the limit.

I do think that GERG will employ multiple fronts/formations depending on who we are playing and what they want to do to us. In the Wisconsin game you will probably see many more 4 man fronts than when we play ND for instance. If a team is going to spread us out and throw all day, the 3-3-5 will be a good base. If they want to play smashmouth, they might force us into beefing up the line to help our run support.

Jibreel Black might be listed at 260, but LaLota is on the MGoBlue roster listed at 6'4" 263.  This is likely a legit 263, as opposed to the often inflated weights of the recruits, and since LaLota enrolled early, he's been in the S&C program for almost a year and a half now, so it's  likely that he is a trim and in shape 263, as opposed to Black who might need to burn off 10lbs of excess leaving him with a toned 245 or 250.  Throw in the fact that LaLota will have an extra year and a half of college coaching on Black, and I'd be willing to bet LaLota is above Jibreel on the depth chart.

After Black is on the team for a year, all bets are off and the better player of the two will play.  Until then, I think LaLota has a major edge.

Also, this is a little off-topic for the thread, but I didn't think it warranted a thread all its own:  What do we think about Isaiah Bell on the depth chart?  For the MIKE, it currently reads Ezeh, Demens, Leach.  I know Leach saw some time last fall, but at 200lbs, can he really be a solid MIKE?  I'm thinking maybe Bell jumps him on the depth chart, but I wanted to hear other people's thoughts on this.
