Lacrosse Team One Open Thread v. Ohio State.
Big things ahead. We're like the people that got to watch the first Michigan football team . . . "What is this odd yet interesting sport, 'ole chap?"
And by the way, I love the Team One reference. Another Hoke-ism taking hold of the entire university.
Not trying to be a troll, but is there a secret meaning to why you spelled maize, Maz?
My parents named me with the expectation that I would bleed maize (/maz) and blue.
My good fellow, it's like hockey and football. throw in a little bit of that european football that they play on the other side of the Atlantic and you've got this cracker jack new game they've been playing in New England for about 4 scores and five years.
Truth be told, it's not much like soccer at all. Hockey + basketball = lacrosse.
I like this strategy to come up with new sports. NASCAR + Football = AwesomeBall
Native americans actually invented it. Played it instead of full out tribal wars.
BTN is the all-Michigan network today. Even the commercials.
I urge all of you to watch this game! They might not win (it's highly improbable) but lacrosse is an awesome sport and I'd love to see more people get into it.
It's really growing strong in the state of Michigan. I would urge you to start your kids early, which is easy because there are tons of leagues and camps for the little guys.
Why is Yealy running through the lines with a pole? Am I missing something?
I noticed that too. Maybe he's taking reps at LSM... but I don't know
That wasn't yealy - it was Dakota Sherman. They showed the wrong guy (#17 instead of #16)
Sometimes guys will use a long stick in warm-ups to help them loosen up. I've seen women use long sticks for the same reason.
Hmmm...didn't see that, but I'll take it.
So are we underdogs today? (I don't know a whole lot about college lacrosse.)
Yes - we are underdogs.
1-1 at 8:51 1st. Top shelf corner with authority.
Oh man what a shot! Nice snipe! Michigan staying with OSU 1-1.
What a shot.
YES....Vasileff scores and it's 1-1.
Annndd.... that's why most teams don't use the 10-man ride.
So is the 10-man ride similar to full-court pressure in basketball? Is the goal to force turnovers?
Sorry, been hanging out at the bottom of the thread. Yes, that's the idea. It has its obvious drawbacks, of course. Typically you don't see it unless a team is down late and really needs to force the issue.
OSU scores on 10-man ride (goal open because keeper was riding an attackman)
I've never seen that ever playing lacrosse.
You're kidding, right? That's not Weiss's mistake. We were on the 10-man ride. It's the coaches' call.
Sorry, I realized that it wasn't his fault when I figured out they were on the 10 man ride. I've only been playing a couple years so a 10 man ride was totally foreign to me.
When we played Notre Dame in 1988 (club team at U-M), one of our attack scored from near half-field because the ND GK got decked (by yours truly) during a ride and coughed up the ball.
That's awesome! Major props to you man. I'm so excited to see this team in the future, I'm playing my 2nd high school season currently in Michigan.
if the GK is covering a man, he is fair game but if he is in net, he cannot be hit?
The circle around the goal, the crease, is a safe zone for the keeper. Once he's outside of the crease, he's fair game (unlike the gentlemanly sport of hockey).
never used to be that "kind". Post-Bettman there were even a few fights. Yes its true. Hockey player used to fight and some good fights too.
The offense can't even put a toe on the crease circle, let alone hit the goalie inside it.
Nice stop on fast break. We are coughing up the ball way to much with forced passes in the middle. We need someone to dodge.
Huge saves by Weiss. Nice
Have to be impressed by Weiss so far. Some good saves on his part.
OSU dude drilled his teammate in the head with a rocket. I hope that kid is OK.
Great shot by him -- 3-1 with 2 sec left in 1st
4-1 now, beg of 2nd
LOL -- I know if you're on this thread, you're watching the game.
Nice goal by Yealy. We need more of that when it's even.
Is it normal in college lacrosse for them not to chase at X?
So far BTN is infinitely better than tWWL at covering Lacrosse. I have watched a half dozen games on ESPN and been utterly confused every time. In the first quarter, BTN has taught me 2 things. 1) What the heck a ground ball is and; 2) Who gets possession when the ball goes over the end line.
Well ask around if you want to know something. I can't tell if you're being sarcastic or not.
Commenting that it is helpful when commentators explain rules, especially in a game like lacross that is not well known. Add to that the fact this is the first time any of us have had any reason to watch this sport, I think btn needs to explain some rules that are perhaps basic. By team 5 or 10 a michigan lacross broadcast may not need that.
I completely understand, sorry, I didn't mean to come off as a dick. I think it's great how they explain the rules too. I was saying if he'd want any explanations then, in addition to the commentators, there are also some of us here willing to explain them in full.
To be fair to ESPN, a lot of people say just the opposite: "I wish I could watch lacrosse without Quint explaining every rule all the time." Their audience consists much more of longtime fans than this one.
So Ohio St. is Div I then? I usually only pay attention to lacrosse when they get to national quarters or so and I don't remember seeing OSU do well, so are they a good team? Why are we big dogs in this game?
OSU is a decent team, and yes, they are D-1. A few years ago I think they made the NCAA q'finals. They've been in D-1 for a while now. We're dogs because our team is all former club players (no recruits). We have 20 recruits coming in for next year.
was impressed. It was my first complete LAX game. I was proud of our boys. They did not play like dogs as far as I could see. Although I know very little of this game.
To be blunt, the reason we're huge underdogs is because we suck.
To be more tactful and truthful, it's our first season, and you know how "expansion teams" are. OSU is not great, not bad, but we're huge underdogs against 90% of teams. If you only paid attention to basketball until the Elite 8 or even Sweet 16, you'd miss out on a lot of good teams; it's no different in lacrosse, of course.
Both Ohio and us are Div. 1. The difference is that Ohio has had a Div. 1 program for longer than we have. Before this season, the lacrosse team for Michigan was simply a club team that used the block M and the name of Michigan. Now it's officially a sport that they can recruit in and gain more experienced players. I believe most if not all of the Michigan players are carried over from the club team.
Man that pissed me off -- mimicking the eating.
I couldn't believe when they came out to warm up...I counted at least 36 Buckeyes before them moving around got it mixed up. I had no idea there were so many. No wonder the football ticket prices went up....that's a lot of scholly money.
Brady kinds screwed them by cutting practice a half hour early. I think a lot of people weren't going to wait an hour in the cold for the game to begin. A half hour with warm ups to entertain didn't seem so bad...
About 40-45 players, with a scholarship limit of 12.6.
I think there's about 40 guys on the U-M squad, but I have no idea how much scholarship money they get. It's obviously not full rides for the whole team.
I live about a 3 minute walk from the stadium so I went home after fb, had lunch, and went back for lax. I've watched enough in TV to know the gist, but It was my first live game. I will definitely be checking out more games as the program grows. You could tell there was quite a bit of turnover in the fans (lots of lax fans showing up as I left after fb) but a good crowd and a hard-fought game.
Start shooting away, lads -- the guy's a punk. Oh how I hate Ohio (State)
Our middies have been getting around theirs for the most part today.
Yeah, that Vasileff goal was a carbon copy of his first one. At some point they'll realize he can do that.
How big is the field/pitch in lacross?
110 yards from end to end, and I forget how wide but ten yards wider than a football field.
It's 110 yards long by 60 yards, it has lines similar to hockey where the offense/defense is not allowed to cross but the midfielders are. The goal crease is off limits to all of the attackmen (name for offense in lacrosse)
Lemme add some clarification to that. "Attackmen" is a position, so really the crease is off limits to all opposing players. Plus it'll confuse people if you say "the defense can't cross the midfield line" because they do all the time; the rule is no more than six non-goalies on either side of the line at any time.
I'm just going to stop trying to explain things, I'll leave that to you
Sorry, didn't mean to come off like an ass there.
as I'm sure MaizeAndBlueWahoo knows, the rule is you have to have at least three players on your offensive half and and at least four players on your defensive half. Generally this is the three attackmen on the offensive half and the three defenders plus the goalie on the defensive half.
The exceptions are if you don't gain an advantage by having too few players on the field. In other words, if you only have 9 players on the field then no one cares that you only have two attackmen on the offensive half. This happens whenever you do a sub on the fly for a fleeting moment. Also, if you happen to have, I think, three guys or more serving penalties then I think the rules get a little funky, but that's pretty rare.
Great look to the goal, but a better save by Buckeye keeper.
So far, so good -- I'm hopeful that we can pull this out. Break Logan Schuss' legs, please (or just enough so they will heal by OSU's next game).
Our next opponent - Rutgers - lost 19-6 today. We'll still be underdogs next week, but Rutgers is quite beatable.
Grapentine would have been hilarious attempting to work this sport called lacrosse.
He had a clear lane to curl around the crease there before that stupid turnover.
Another yard sale.
Cool Story Bro Moment:
I played against Greg Bice (BTN Announcer) when he was at Ohio State as a freshman. I played for Mercyhurst a DII program from PA in a scrimmage. I was a long pole and had a catastrophic head to head collision on a faceoff. That hit put me and the OSU player in the cat scan machine at Wexner Medical Center. I don't even remember waking up that morning but I remember really being jacked up during warm-ups and salivating at the thought of laying someone out.
/end of cool story bro
So are you allowed to just whack people with your stick when they have the ball?
Yes. On the arms and on the stick, though these are interpreted very liberally. In real life anywhere between the neck and the waist is OK 90% of the time.
You can hammer the guy with the ball on his stick, hands and arms. You have to be careful because if you nail him in the body, they'll call slashing.
Meh, I always tried to lay a little alloy on the attackmans hip a few times in the first quarter. Accidentally of course.
We're in decent shape. If we can stop turnovers and get ground balls, we'll have a chance to win.
Three, four goals isn't insurmountable at all. We really do have to get the next one, though.
We are hanging tough, maybe we can put a few more in and really make it a game.
Great save, and great attempt by Schuss, who landed in the crease, which is a no-no
It looks insanely hard to be a lacrosse goalie. I feel like both of them have done well today.
It is very hard. They are all nuts. They hardly have any pads on other than the chest, neck and balls. They have nerves of steel to stand on front of a rubber ball moving 80 mph.
That's sort of what they wear on their chest. I think it has a lot to do with tradition. Lacrosse hurts a lot and they want to keep it that way.
Haha, not a grammar nazi here. Or is it hear?
They have pads that stretch down to maybe the belly button if not a tiny bit lower. They don't wear any arm pads, however.
Yeah. I played goalie in hockey, which was bad enough. It barely seems possible to make a save in this sport unless it is shot right at you. It's like telling a hockey goalie that you are going to take away his pads and he can only make saves with his stick.
I used to cringe when I saw goalies in college make kick saves with bare legs. No thank you.
Very impressive effort by team one today. No matter what happens they should hold their heads high. The talent and size difference out there is very noticable, yet they keep fighting admirably.
This has been the trend today. Anytime we start to get close we can't prevent the answer.
Great goal by Vasileff
Greiner must not have a left hand. Roll and it was a goal there buddy!
Would've loved to see Greiner get the hat trick. You don't see that much from your FOGOs.
Now THAT was a beautiful play.
That sure was. Nice to see them moving the ball. BTW did you grow up in VA?
No, in Michigan. Went to school at UVA.
Gotcha, did you play lax in VA, club or varsity?
Ummm....once in a while I would borrow a friend's stick and toss a ball around in my spare time. Thing is, UVA is one of those schools where it's very easy to become a lacrosse fan.
We sure don't look like we should be 1-11 on the season. Are they just playing over their heads today?
Yes, they must be.
One thing I've noticed today is that the clearing game appears to have been much better than it's been in the past. (Meaning, Michigan is usually terrible at getting the ball to the offensive side of the field after recovering it on defense, and they have done well today.)
That feed and shot was dope. Keep it up!!!
For people who aren't as familiar with the game. If the ball is down you are allowed to body up the other players, it's not interference.
Within three yards of a ground ball, you can smash the other guy (legally).
Oh man, that would have been a nice one to have.
Their mids are still giving the edge. Let's keep going at it
We need 10 goals!!
Crikey, that was close LOL. ohio gk almost scored hehheh
We are so close to making this super-tight. Just small errors are hurting us.
We're going for it. Glad to see it (we have the keeper out on the field double-teaming).
Well we have had plenty of chances down the stretch. Just have not been able to capitalize.
Holy crap how do we keep hitting the post?
Wow, we have hit a lot of posts and crossbars today.
2 pipes in the last 2-3 minutes! Damn! We were very close!
Helluva game by U-M. Future is very bright.
Great. Another reason to hate Ohio State. Like I needed one.
Pleased with what I saw today despite the loss. Good clearing game, much improved from previous games, respectable defense, good faceoff play, solid goalkeeping. We really could use some playmakers. We don't have too many guys that can break down a defense consistently. A few more breaks our way and that could've been a win, but we hit a lot of posts.
I'd like to see some more attackmen who are willing to try a dodge around a defender.
I agree- I was at the game watching it up close. We needed to be more aggressive offensively. Acutally, we had a few guys who could get a step on Ohio defenders, but once we drew the slide we got a bit timid and didn't move the ball fast enough. Ohio definitely had one very weak defensive midfielder who Michigan repeatedly picked on, which was a good strategy. Ohio's overall team D was very good. But I would have liked to see more dodges from our attack.
I don't think we have the talent right now to be more aggressive. I wish I could say this without coming off the wrong way, but I'm used to watching lacrosse played at a higher level than that. Most of what you see on TV is ESPN broadcasting ACC games, Hopkins, Syracuse, Cornell, etc. and there's a clear difference in the passing and ballhandling. I thought we had a number of turnovers that wouldn't have happened to better teams.
And best of luck to the Michigan team the rest of the way.
But those maize unis are probably the worst-looking thing I have ever seen on a Michigan team. Nauseating.
Are you serious??
Those uniforms are sharp.
Yep. Love the maize jerseys/shorts. I'd be interested to see blue shorts, too.
A great showing as usual by Michigan. Great effort, they never quit.
Really awesome that someday I can tell my kids that I was at the first game in rivalry history and was at the first Battle at The Big House.
I heard penn state is most likely going to be the opponent next year.
