Lacrosse Loses to Rutgers 14-7, Falls to 8-3

Submitted by L'Carpetron Do… on

Lacrosse lost to Rutgers 14-7 in front of a good spring day crowd in the Big House. But, it was much worse than that; it was 13-3 at one point before Michigan got a few back when Rutgers eased off the gas.

This was not a good L for Michigan. Rutgers is pretty good but Michigan played sloppy and could not stay with them. They were outplayed in every facet of the game. Michigan did not have anyone capable of gaining separation on a dodge or a cut to get off a shot. The offense was stagnant, overly patient and frequently turned the ball over. The defense was equally bad as they let up 8 goals to a freshman attackman, constantly lost cutters and didn't land checks.

The good news: Ian King became Michigan's all-time leading scorer by tallying his 89th career goal. Also - goalie Tommy Heidt played heroically.

This was a bad day for Michigan but they have to put it behind them. They have to get ready for a game Ohio State squad who is ranked #9 and plays really hard. That's next week in the Big House before the spring game. They can't put in another performance like they did today.  Here's to hoping they bounce back- Go Blue!

Looks like a decent day out there (although the shadows and the glare off the turf makes it a little tough to see). Good crowd too.  We forced a couple of turnovers already!

Rutgers has a good D so Michigan is gonna have to push a little harder to get that D to move. And we gotta finish when we get the chance.  Sutherland had a decent look there but shot it wide.

Question, are you in favor of keeping John Paul? If so, please explain why. What has he shown you that leads you to believe he will win a national championship here. Otherwise this is nothing but an excercise in shifting the argument from the point being made to the person making it.

You echo what a lot of former club players have told me as well. Paul reminds me of Hoke in that he's a good recruiter but just doesn't have the coaching chops.

Realistically who do you think would be a good fit to replace him? With the new facility opening in 2018 now might be the best time to make a change.

Don't buy that for a second. People don't like other people telling them what they don't want to hear. I don't really see how there is a nice way of saying someone should be fired, and I don't see the value in it even if there was. If some are going to continue to keep making deductions on other's tone and style through a medium that restrcits and limits the interpetration of both then what are we really doing here.

I know the record is good this year but every time I watch Michigan lacrosse they just seem to lack basic fundamentals of lacrosse and can't run an offense for shit

7-2 Rutgers now. Getting outshot 31-10. Time to get a real coach in here, it's been 6 years and we have 1 Big Ten win to show for it.

They literally have an open guy on the crease every offensive posession.  Its 10-3 but its just embarrasing how easily they have outclassed us.  We still look like a club team trying to keep up with a d1 school.  The athletes aren't there, the skill isn't there, and the coaching isn't there.

Rutgers is good but Michigan shouldn't be getting run off the field like this.  They gotta get their act together and play with some pride here down the stretch.  Get some back and make it look respectable.

That D was bad - they were starting to look like last year. I'm not sold on the defensive assistant - they run a weird defensive scheme that never seems to work.

There was one early goal where one of our offensive middies got caught on defense. The Rutgers dude noticed this, saw the space in the crease and no one was ready to help, pushed through and scored. There was no slide. If we have a guy out of place the D has to recognize that and be ready to help. In the 3rd quarter there were also simple cuts that went uncovered and Rutgers ended up with easy looks on the doorstep. Not to mention, Mullins got an easy-ass goal off a feed inside and the guy there didn't lay a check on his hands or put a body on him. You would think  after he had 4 goals, not 7,  he would've been a priority for the defense. The clearing was also haphazard.  This is all on coaching.

Overall its a lot better than last year, but the addition of transfer Dickson could be the reason for that. So far in Big Ten play they've been outscored 29-15. They really gotta get it together for next week.

Double post, but I'll add that the OC needs to replace JP and we need to get two new elite defensive coaches and only then we will see Michigan start beating real programs.

Harbaugh just signed that dude Matt Brown (is that his name? - can't remember) to play LB or FB.  He was supposed to go somewhere else on a lacrosse scholarship - that would be great if he played lacrosse too. If I was the coach I would staff the defense and midfield with rugged dudes who know how to hit. This team needs to get physical!

In year six of the Michigan men’s varsity lacrosse program, the Wolverines (8-3) have not beaten a team that currently has a winning record. The combined record for those teams is 26-54.  Michigan’s three losses have come against teams with a combined record of 21-7.  In none of those three losses (16-5 to Notre Dame, 15-8 to Maryland and 14-7 to Rutgers) did Michigan look like it was ready to compete against top-level teams.

Michigan’s records in its first five seasons were 1-12, 1-13, 5-11, 5-8 and 3-10. Until this season, when it upset then-10th-ranked Penn 13-12, Michigan never had beaten a ranked team.

By contrast, in its fourth year of varsity play, Boston University is 9-3. Its three losses were 12-6 to Bucknell (4-7), 10-6 to Lehigh (5-5) and 11-10 to 6th ranked Army (10-1).  The combined record of the nine teams BU has beaten is 43-58. Three of those teams currently have winning records.  BU has played the entire season without its regular faceoff specialist, injured senior Sam Talkow who was third in the nation on faceoff percentage (.695), Patriot League Faceoff Specialist of the Year and First Team All-League in 2016 and an Inside Lacrosse pre-season All-American this year.

BU’s records for its first three seasons are 2-12, 6-8 and 8-7.  In their second season, they upset then-18th-ranked Colgate. In their third season, they upset then-16th-ranked Navy and then-14th-ranked Harvard. This year, they've upset then-17th-ranked Navy.

This year, 1-10 Lafayette has been the only common opponent that Michigan and BU have played. Michigan beat Lafayette 17-6 on Feburary 11 indoors at Oosterbaan Field House; BU beat Lafayette 15-7 on March 25 outdoors at BU's home, historic Nickerson Field on the site of the old National League's Braves Field where Babe Ruth played his final season in 1935 and the place where the first regular-season American Football League game was played between the Boston Patriots and the Denver Broncos on Friday night, September 9, 1960.
