Lacrosse loses close one, 10-7 vs Colgate at Citi Field

Another close one for Michigan today at the Metropolitan Lacrosse Classic at Citi Field, home of the Mets. Thanks to Mets owner and Michigan alum Fred Wilpon, Michigan was the home team.

Without a couple sloppy plays on defense by Michigan and the fatal colgate mistake of nearly scoring on themselves coming to fruition, Michigan could have very well won this game.

Saturday, 3/23, Michigan will get the defending national champion #10 Loyola (MD) at Michigan Stadium to open up the true home slate. Game will be on MGoBlueTV. This is Loyola's final season in the ECAC. They will be defecting to the Patriot League next season.

Stats- Michigan had a pretty good game and the stats don't lie. Shocking one was perfect on clears.

Stat U-M  COLG
Shots 37 31
Ground Balls 21 33
Faceoffs 13-22 9-22
Clears 17-17(!) 18-23
Turnovers 13 12
Saves 9 12
Extra-Man 0-2 0-1

ECAC Standings-

Blacked out on ESPN3

Won't let me watch it, I'm actually gonna have to pay attention in math class noooooo

But on the bright side, I did get my season tickets for lacrosse. $10 for 6 games in the Big House and a t-shirt, pretty good deal to experience a new UofM sport

LOL what a clownshow.  The inexperience really shows when you've got seven guys on defense and everyone can see it.  JP yelling "DOUBLE THE BALL."  Might as well.  I wonder what was stopping us from just putting all nine guys on the defensive side once you've got that penalty going for you.

Probably right.  I was sort of half-joking but I do assume there's something written in the rulebook to prevent that from happening, otherwise someone would've done it before now.

Was at the game today.  It was cold, but not brutal.  I layered.  And drank.

M&B - 7 guys on the defensive end happens a lot.  If you go offsides, which can happen on clears (it shouldn't, but it does every once in awhile), you just stay and play defense.  The flag is already down.  There's no reason to go back onsides at that point.  I've been playing and coaching a long time, and I see it a lot - especially at the high school level.  At the D1 level offsides happens less, but if you go off when the other team has possession, that's what you do.

I know.  The problem was that

I know.  The problem was that our 7th guy played a little defense, then tried to go back on offense, then went back to defense, and then Michigan settled into a defense that took no advantage whatsoever of the 7th guy, who sort of floated in the middle guarding nobody.  Until JP (or another coach) hollered to double the ball so loud you could hear it on TV.  It looked like they had no idea what to do in that situation.

I dunno man.  I mean, yes, we are outmatched, but I was thinking you wouldn't have known it from just that first quarter.  Other than looking like a Mickey Mouse outfit on the offsides penalty, that is.  But they won the faceoff battle and killed Colgate's 2-man-up chance, and probably possessed the ball for the majority of the quarter.  And Logan looked great.

And there's another one.  Two

And there's another one.  Two guys stay with the screener, nobody takes the ball.  Talk about leaving your goalie hanging out to dry.

Always hated it

When I allowed a one on none with my keeper. I played LSM and low defense so it happened more than I like to admit.

That was ugly

No communication from the defense right there. For those unfamiliar with lacrosse, without defensive communication a defense will fail most of the time.

Any current students or alums

Any current students or alums know if there is any movement going on about a lacrosse student section group? Need to get behind these guys. They play in the biggest stadium in lacrosse by far and don't draw what they should be.

Yes

It's called the "Extra Man Unit" according to the email I got. Tickets were $10 for the season, including a shirt, with seats in section 1. First game is this Saturday.

How many years until we are competitive?

Do you think Coach Paul could have our team competing with most of the squads in two years, or do you think it will take longer? How many recruiting classes will it take? I am just curious, and I think that we need to be patient.

Also, where else do you think it would make sense to try to play in the next couple of years to build some brand awareness? I think Boston, Denver, Philly and San Fran would make sense.

Go Blue!

San Fran probably not.  We

San Fran probably not.  We went out and did a thing in Denver last year, and our conference will have us playing in Colorado (unless and until B1G lacrosse is a thing.)  I'd like to see us get ahold of one of the upstate NY teams like the one we're playing now, or Canisius or someone, and play a game in Toronto.  Don't think it's necessary to do a neutral-site thing in Philly or Boston with so many teams in those cities we can just do a home-and-home with.

Depends on what you mean by

Depends on what you mean by competing.  They are competing now.  Their last four have been close.  If you mean winning, they have a ways to go.  Another two years maybe to start winning more than a couple?  Even though this is Team Two, they only have one recruiting class in.  Watching them today, you can see the difference between the D1 recruits and the returning club guys.  They need the current freshmen to grow up, and they need two or three more classes for depth and more top end players.

Will probably be 5-10 years before they have a shot at becoming really good.

Can't count the number of times today we've seen a really nice individual move or effort to get free for a shot and then the shot itself is lousy.

No question they are

No question they are improving.  My thoughts from today...

Meter is their best dodger at attack.  But there is nobody there who can carry the offense (ie. no Trey Burke point guard type player).  Recruiting, recruiting, recruiting.

That first midfield line is really talented and athletic.  And they are all freshmen.  They are putting the offense on their shoulders right now.  Joseph is tiny, but he's fast and tough.  Jackson is the best player on the team.  Hernandez is a beast.  They get free all the time, but they don't shoot well.  If these three guys get their shots going over the next couple of years, look out.

There is no depth at midfield.  The second line did nothing.  They need Paras back.  He barely played again.

Great to see the faceoff unit getting so much better.  Colgate is a very good faceoff team, and Lott and his wings did a great job.

Logan had an off day by his standards.  I thought he let in a couple of softies.  He's very, very good though.  A great goalie is the way you start building a program.  He will win some games for them down the line.

Defense is missing a few starters still.  Johnson, Swaney and Orr didn't play that I could see.  They slide A LOT which makes for a confusing defense to play, but it also forces the offense to make plays.  They make a lot of mistakes.  They had trouble with picks today as well.

No problem clearing today.  There is no doubt they are playing with more confidence.  Where they really struggle is ground balls.  They just look like they get muscled off a lot of ground balls when it was a scrum.  Maybe that's all the freshmen who need to get tougher and stronger.

The event itself was just kind of weird.  Horrible sight lines in a baseball stadium.  That and I don't like the Mets.  Decent crowd (they announced 15,000 and change), but it was spread throughout the stadium and I think a lot of people left after the first game.

I was at the game at Hopkins

I was at the game at Hopkins a few weeks ago and I went today.  the improvement is certainly evident.

The faceoffs looked pretty good.  Clears were way better.  and it seems that between hernandez, joseph and jackson they have a few guys who can create on offense.

they are really frustrating to watch for two reasons though: 1)they are not physical.  They had lots of opportunities to tune guys up and they didn't.  Especially on unsettled plays in the midfield.  If they are always going to be the less skilled  team, they should at least throw their bodies around and let 'em know they're there.

2)They don't throw checks, which is infuriating.  I don't understand the modern system of defense.   So, if they're playing  to set up the slides, they better get them right.  And if you are sliding you have to take the body and be physical.  Otherwise, the D will never be able to keep them in games.

Bu the last few games were really encouraging.  I just hope they  can start rolling and pick up some W's.
